Flu Jab this year for first time

Am thinking of getting this. Never had it before. Not in a risk group but GP mentioned govt will be advising over 50s to get it and thought of getting it privately next month as would probably have to wait till end of Nov/beginning of Dec on NHS once at risk groups have been done and also subject to availability.

Reading possible side effects - says raised temperature - I teach a gyms - they have a temperature gauge that shows green or red - am concerned that I might be unable to teach now after the jab despite not being unwell.

Does anyone who has the flu jab any experience with a high temp?

Never really bothered with it before - part of the reasoning was also to get the flu jab so I know if I am very ill with fluey symptoms, I will be more likely to have Covid and go and get a test.

I have the flu jab every year (asthma). I've only had side effects a couple of times and I didn't have any last year. I've never had a temperature, just felt rubbish for a few days.

PilatesPeach · 09/09/2020 21:01

Thank you - have you still been able to go about your normal work and life despite feeling rubbish may I ask?

I've had a sore arm and felt mildly ropey after the flu jab but never had a temperature. Any side effects only last a day or two.

And yes to being able to go about my normal life afterwards.

Ive have it every year for 5 years and I’m only 26, no health problems. We get it through work. Never had any issues with it whatsoever!

PilatesPeach · 09/09/2020 21:04

thank you

The vaccine isn’t “live”. The only side effect I have ever had is a sore arm!
If you’re entitled to it on the NHS you can book a free Boots flu vaccine. That’s what I’ve done.

1990shopefulftm · 09/09/2020 21:04

Had it three years in a row, get arm pain for two days and once got a bit sniffly for tow days but never had a temp

SimonJT · 09/09/2020 21:04

I have it every year (type one diabetic and minimal spleen function), apart from a slightly tender arm I don’t get any side effects.

RuthW · 09/09/2020 21:10

Iv'e had it for 30 years. Never any side effects at all

Gingertam · 09/09/2020 21:11

I've had one every year for the past 6 years after a really nasty bout of flu. ( Never want to get that again!) I've never had a problem. I would have it. As said above, once they announce over 50s you can have it done at pharmacies like Boots or Lloyds for free. The govt has said once the jabs are well under way for vulnerable groups they will let the over 50s go. I would just wait if it was me.

Rollerboots · 09/09/2020 21:24

I am a nurse and get it every year. I've never had a side effect bar the sore arm, it feels a bit like you ha w had a punch to it. Lasts a day or so. Take some paracetamol before you go to work and get your temperature taken.

PeaceAndHarmoneeee · 09/09/2020 21:55

Hope u don't mind a slight thread hijack but do you know when the best time to get a flu jab is? Am planning on getting a private one.

muddledmidget · 09/09/2020 22:02

The best time to get a flu jab is as soon as you can. The immunity doesn't wear off, we just have a new vaccine each year to protect against the likely circulating strains of flu which be different or have mutated significantly since last year. After having the jab it takes up to 2 weeks for your body to produce the antibodies that provide the protection so you want to have those ready before flu becomes too prevalent. Also if you have little ones who are getting the nasal spray then ideally 2 weeks before they have theirs as the nasal spray is a live although weakened flu, so they can potentially spread flu

Lockdownseperation · 09/09/2020 22:04

@PeaceAndHarmoneeee as soon as they are available is the best time to get one.

PeaceAndHarmoneeee · 09/09/2020 22:08

Thank you!

WitchSharkadder · 09/09/2020 22:09

I've been having them for 10 years and have only ever had a mildly sore arm for the day. If you're concerned could you book it before a day off? I wouldn't be worried though, I've never known anyone have a fever afterwards.

Splendidseptember · 09/09/2020 22:23

I get one every year. No side affects, no temp. It would be very rare if you had any.

The cost, £8 maybe £12 max is surely worth it, for the chance to avoid flu.

Flu is vicious.

Splendidseptember · 09/09/2020 22:25

Muddle I'm waiting to see when nasal spray becomes available. I've not seen or heard anything yet.
I am not sure why as it is purely for dc...

shinynewapple2020 · 09/09/2020 22:29

I've had a flu jab, maybe 5 of the last 10 years (don't always remember). A couple of years I had it for free at work and other times have paid around £8 Asda pharmacy . Never had any issues

But , I'm sure I read somewhere that having a flu jab raised the risk that if you got Covid you would more likely get it badly. No idea why that would be . Has anyone else seen this?

I was planning on getting one done this year but that made me think twice .

RiaOverTheRainbow · 09/09/2020 22:31

I pay about a tenner to get mine at my local pharmacy. I've never had an issue, but if you want to be extra sure you could always get it just before the weekend.

RiaOverTheRainbow · 09/09/2020 22:34

@shinynewapple2020 where did you read that? That seems highly unlikely, not least because we haven't had a flu season since covid became widely tested/diagnosed.

SamanthaJayne4 · 09/09/2020 22:43

Having my flu jab next week. Been having the flu jab for 27 years with no side effects. Occasionally have a sore or achy arm but usually nothing.

HoldMyLobster · 10/09/2020 01:02

We’re in the US so the whole family gets the flu jab every year. In 12 years none of us has had any side effects.

HoldMyLobster · 10/09/2020 01:05

But , I'm sure I read somewhere that having a flu jab raised the risk that if you got Covid you would more likely get it badly. No idea why that would be . Has anyone else seen this?

I read the opposite.
