Flu Jab this year for first time

Am thinking of getting this. Never had it before. Not in a risk group but GP mentioned govt will be advising over 50s to get it and thought of getting it privately next month as would probably have to wait till end of Nov/beginning of Dec on NHS once at risk groups have been done and also subject to availability.

Reading possible side effects - says raised temperature - I teach a gyms - they have a temperature gauge that shows green or red - am concerned that I might be unable to teach now after the jab despite not being unwell.

Does anyone who has the flu jab any experience with a high temp?

Never really bothered with it before - part of the reasoning was also to get the flu jab so I know if I am very ill with fluey symptoms, I will be more likely to have Covid and go and get a test.

@toonboom
The nasal one is live?
Really?
We are doomed then
Like sending some out with a aching gun into a crowd of people

camperjam · 10/09/2020 15:27

I've had one for the past 4 or 5 years. Usually get a sore arm and sometimes feel a bit 'coldy' the day after but for me it's definitely worth it.

VinylDetective · 10/09/2020 15:27

I’ve had it every year for the last ten years. The only effect I’ve felt is a sore arm a couple of times.

@PilatesPeach
But flu isn’t covid?
We are repeatedly told that are different viruses
I don’t understand that

Dowser · 10/09/2020 15:29

Aching gun - machine gun

Dowser · 10/09/2020 15:32

My friend had flu a few years back and Covid recently
He has many underlying health issues
Flu was the worst.

Fluffycloudland77 · 10/09/2020 15:34

@Dowser, no you’re right but they pick the strains most likely to infect you. There’s 14 different strains of chicken pox but most of us have only had it once. Sometimes if you have an antibody that is similar to one of the other strains it does help immunity too.

The nasal one isn’t completely live or you’d get flu, it’s partially active as kids immune systems deal with viruses differently to adults. It’s not going to actually give them flu.

If we increase the numbers having the flu vaccine this year it should decrease the demand on the nhs for flu complications and leave space for covid patients.

MiteBiteatNite · 10/09/2020 15:37

I have a flu jab every year due to asthma. Worst side effect is the achey arm. I did have one year when it was much worse and my arm swelled up something shocking. I massaged it gently and it went down by the end of the day, so I can only assume it was a fluke.

As a side note, my GP informed me that as I was on the shielding list, everyone I live with is entitled to have the jab this year so if you're living with someone who was shielding you can have it done at your surgery or a pharmacy free of charge.

Gingertam · 10/09/2020 15:37

@Dowser No you are correct, I realise I might still get the flu. I'm just a bit of the "every little helps"mentality. I realise everyone is different and some people won't want to bother. I only know a few people who had side effects and that was only a bit of a sore arm.

Fluffycloudland77 · 10/09/2020 15:39

Ooh dh was shielded. I wonder where his letter is.

Fifthtimelucky · 10/09/2020 16:07

I'm in my late 50s so will be eligible this year, though I haven't yet decided whether to have a jab or not. I never have done in the past and I've only had flu once - 45 years ago - and am generally very healthy so I have never seen it as necessary.

My husband is 10 years older and has had one for years without any problems.

TurrettOnLine · 10/09/2020 16:16

Received a text today to say flu jab will not be given at GP surgery, I will receive a letter from local health board with an appointment at a local venue. I am in Scotland

MaudesMum · 10/09/2020 16:16

My GPs is advising that over 50s who don't have specific long-term health conditions won't be getting flu injections any time soon as they ordered all their stock ages ago and well in advance of the Government deciding that everyone over 50 should get one. They're suggesting January, which seems a bit useless - so (as a late 50s person) I'm considering paying for one to get it done before the winter rather than half way through!

Fluffycloudland77 · 10/09/2020 16:35

I’ve heard a lot of flu comes in feb/March.

My 50 year old 'generally very healthy' stepsister died of flu a few years ago. She didn't think the flu jab was necessary either, sadly.

PilatesPeach · 10/09/2020 17:23

@Dowser yes am aware flu is not Covid but some of the symptoms are eg fever, cough not sure where I said they were the same I just want to try and protect myself from at least one of them.

OP posts:
PilatesPeach · 10/09/2020 17:23

some of the symptoms are similar

Iwasonceabrownie · 10/09/2020 17:48

Just an achy arm, that's all.

Spam88 · 10/09/2020 18:19

@yolio definitely didn't mean you, it was clear that you meant paracetamol for the achey arm, I was referring to comments like "Take some paracetamol before you go to work and get your temperature taken."

yolio · 10/09/2020 18:23

No problem Spam. I was being jokey in my reply anyway! Gotta try and keep the thread as positive as possible, it will help so many to decide to go for it.

Spam88 · 10/09/2020 18:52

I'll be paying to get one this year assuming there's enough availability - I normally get one through work but am on mat leave and think it'd be Sod's law that I'd end up getting flu this year!
