I gave up ironing years ago, Just fold or hang up.
His new shirts are so crinkly, either line dried or in the tumble dryer.
No other option but to iron them.

If he is wearing a blazer, just do the boys that can be seen

Handheld steamer? I've got one, it gets creases out quicker and easier than ironing but doesn't quite give that crisp ironed look.

Make him wear a jumper Grin

Have you tried
-drying them on a hanger
-tumble drying them a bit then putting them on a hanger
-feeding him up so they don't fit and buying some new ones?

NotExactlyMrsCurrentAffairs · 08/09/2020 09:41

It's because the children's, no crease shirts are too small for him now. He's in men's formal white shirts and they look a mess if they haven't been ironed.
It would have to be all or nothing. Incase he takes his blazer off.

If he’s at secondary teach him to do it himself. I hate ironing shirts.

NotExactlyMrsCurrentAffairs · 08/09/2020 09:43

I have got a steam mop that has a a detachable steam nozzle bit.

M&S men's non iron shirts, plenty of other places do them too. Just to bear in mind for next time. But yes, make him iron them.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 08/09/2020 09:47

If he's old enough to be wearing men's shirts he's old enough to be ironing them himself.

YorkshireIndie · 08/09/2020 09:50

Teach him to iron

Steam function on the washing machine GrinGrin

He should be ironing them. You're right. He's almost 15.
I wrap him in cotton wool.
He's got dyspraxia and hms.
But if I want him to live an independent life he needs to learn.
I just worry and do everything for him

that.
SoupDragon · 08/09/2020 09:52

Yes, teach him to iron them himself!

I made DSs do it at a nominal £1 per shirt after they lost their Ouster card (£10 fee) a few times. It was to pay off the "debt". I never told them when it was paid off and I never ironed a shirt again.

KatharinaRosalie · 08/09/2020 10:03

Also steaming works fine - the shirts won't be as crisp as with a normal iron, but it is a lot quicker and easier. I have this type of station but steamer attachment should do the job.

Ironing is reasonably satisfying in small doses. Loved doing it as a kid, am happy to iron fabric for quilting, won't do anything else.

Teach him, it's a good skill and a few school shirts won't do his head in as it does yours. It'll give him a sense of accomplishment making all those crinkles nice.

whirlwindwallaby · 08/09/2020 10:46

Teach him then leave it up to him whether he wants them ironed or not.

whirlwindwallaby · 08/09/2020 10:47

My 14 year old doesn't care enough to do them himself so just wears them creased. School could let them wear polos if they were bothered.

Yunis · 08/09/2020 10:50

Show him how a couple of times and then leave him to it, he can decide to just wear them crinkled or iron.

RedskyAtnight · 08/09/2020 10:51

In our household school shirts get dried on a hanger. If the teens think they need ironing they do it themselves.

For some reason, it turns out that shirts don't need ironing that much ...

CMOTDibbler · 08/09/2020 10:53

He'll never get better at ironing if he doesn't learn. I started mine off on ironing pillow cases and worked up from there. You aren't doing him any favours by not getting him to do basic household tasks

BlackInk · 08/09/2020 11:57

We just dry them on hangers either outside on the line or inside on an airer, then hang them on the back of DS' door ready to wear. They're not perfect, but fine under a blazer. The only thing I ever iron is Hama beads :)
When my DD was tiny she had a check up with the health visitor, and they got out a toy ironing board for her to play with. DD thought it was a surf board...

movingonup20 · 08/09/2020 12:00

Teach him to iron. Dd had to iron in the cadets to military standard at that age.

Demonstrate, supervise a couple of times then let him do it. It's the only way they learn. Those with extra difficulties need to be shown extra times but still important to trust them once they have learned

OchonAgusOchonO · 08/09/2020 12:06

Thankfully, ds's school allows polo shirts. However, he started back to school last week, dug out the trousers that had been in a ball in a drawer since march and arrived down ready to head to school. I did suggest he iron them, but he said they'd be grand and he couldn't be bothered, so he went in to school wearing trousers that were as you would expect after 6 months in a ball in a drawer. Mind you, the creases did mean that the paint stain I hadn't noticed wasn't so obvious....

In my defence, he is 17. I refuse to treat him like a small child and it is 100% his responsibility. I had asked did he need any new bits of uniform and he said no. That was where my responsibility ended.

So the moral of my story is pass responsibility to your child and decide it's not a reflection on you.

I love ironing, I find it satisfying when It’s finished so it wouldn’t bother me.
