Are social media influencers modern day prostitutes?

I know a girl from school younger than me and we lived in a small village so everyone knows everyone. This particular girl had hardly achieved anything such as a education, while most of my peers including myself went off to university she stayed in the same village and got a job at the local pub. Fast forward 5 years. She is travelling the world, staying in expensive hotels, wearing really expensive handbags (4-5k) and posing in lingerie. She has had a lot of cosmetic surgery and looks very common just like the kardashians (butt implants, nose job, boob job, lip fillers and the whole lot). All her photos are basically in really expensive hotels around the world and in expensive restaurants and bars where someone who has had a low paid job could never afford it. She doesn't model anything in particular such as fashion or accessories as most of her posts are just in lingerie, bedsheet, towel covering her private's or in a skimpy dress with an expensive hand bag in a sky bar and yacht. She has thousands of followers, no bf (mum is friends with her mum) and particularly travels to countries such as Dubai, Bali and Spain- Marbella and Ibiza quite often. Am I wrong to think she is prostituting herself to have this lifestyle? It's of course none of my business but reading recent articles about how Instagram models are approached on social media and a business deal is made to basically prostitute herself to wealthy men particularly from the Middle East it has flagged up and captured my attention as I have been wondering how it's possible to achieve such a lifestyle. She's either doing that or basically transporting white goods I don't know. What do you think? Just wanted to chat.

Prostitutes are modern day prostitutes. Hmm

MagentaADomestic · 08/09/2020 08:23

Wow, this sounds very harsh and this is coming from someone that isn't a fan of social media or "influencers"

Crispycove · 08/09/2020 08:27

You sound a little jealous.

bluecheese2412 · 08/09/2020 08:28

I'm not a judgemental type but you do need to see the profile first to see where I'm coming from. I've never thought of this before until I read an article about this. In fact some love island contestants even commented about this before where they were approached and some bloggers shared their experiences particularly from Dubai where prostitution is forbidden but is a popular destination to be picked up.

Did you think she’s having sex for money? Posing for photos isn’t the same thing at all. I might have misunderstood you.

Puppylucky · 08/09/2020 08:32

Transporting white goods? Who knew there was so much money in fridge freezers?!

MagentaADomestic · 08/09/2020 08:33

But you mentioned her lack of education, that she worked in a pub, has no boyfriend and that she looks common. It comes across as extremely judgemental and bitchy.

Danni290 · 08/09/2020 08:33

You're jealous, I'd hate to break it to you but you are!!

A prostitute, just for clarity is someone who has sex in exchange for money. So how is it modern day prostitution?

bluecheese2412 · 08/09/2020 08:34

@Crispycove no I'm not jealous. It's just because we lived in a small village, everyone's success is celebrated and but often visible from where they have gained their wealth. So for instance, a school mate would open up a new business or would get a city job etc or even inheritance.

Transporting white goods

Sorry OP, I just have a mental picture of her in a fancy sky bar with a washing machine now. Grin

I thought from the title you meant in a figurative sense — people do seem to want a lot of time and detail from influencers that can seem quite intrusive. I don't know anything about literal prostitution though.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 08/09/2020 08:35

I think a lot of influencers are escorts.

Describing someone as looking "common" is horrible and snobby though.

jcurve · 08/09/2020 08:35

You sound a bit judgmental given you hardly know her.

But yes, frequent travel to Dubai is usually an indicator that an instagrammer is providing services to men of one kind or another.

AvoidingRealHumans · 08/09/2020 08:36

You sound jealous, you say she didn't do well educationally so she has obviously found another way to support herself through life. Social media is a massive thing now and is a well paying job for some people.
Worry about your own job and income

CurtainWitcher · 08/09/2020 08:37

Ha! Jealousy rears it's ugly head.

She has a fantastic life and you are simply envious.

Pippin2028 · 08/09/2020 08:38

It is known that some of these influences do make their money in Dubai or they do the summer European yacht circuits such as monoco and the South of France. Usually they have a sugar daddy or arrangements and they get spotted on IG with their photos. Although I have heard they have to do some pretty nasty stuff (not just sex). This article explains alot

Cheeseybites · 08/09/2020 08:39

I personally know someone who did this..she was flown to Dubai to 'provide services' to a wealthy man..however she did also used to be an actual escort here in London too, so I dont know if all influencers who don't do anything in particular, get their money this way. Who knows?

bluecheese2412 · 08/09/2020 08:40

To all, please read this before making comments that I am jealous and stop twisting my words of white goods fgs you know what that means?

@Cheeseybites sorry if my title or post has been written in a way that includes everyone but no not every influencer. I follow influencers from fitness to mums and I doubt they provide sex services for expensive handbags or money.

OP posts:
bluecheese2412 · 08/09/2020 08:44

@Pippin2028 yes I read something that the money they receive for their services, isn't worth the torment they go through which affects their mental health and future relationships. They go through pretty degrading stuff that no human being should ever go through.

OP posts:
bluecheese2412 · 08/09/2020 08:47

@Waxonwaxoff0 when I meant common I didn't mean common, common I meant that those who go through the same surgery as the kardashians all look the same don't they? The large bum, massive lips, cheek fillers, small waists etc they have lost all their distinctive features and just look the same.

OP posts:
Laaalaaaa · 08/09/2020 08:50

Yes, she most probably is. There are girls local to me who once they started posting pictures of their ‘party lifestyle’ in Dubai they were dripping in designer gear. No amount of swipe ups for £10 bikinis etc is going to pay for that lifestyle.

bluecheese2412 · 08/09/2020 08:53

I actually knew another girl who was my DH's best friends ex gf (DH's best friend is 50 something and very wealthy) the relationship was short and weird . She is now probably 25-26 and she could hardly pay for her room rent but is out in sky bars and again in expensive handbags. I know this as I follow her.

Ohthatsgreat · 08/09/2020 08:55

I get your point. I think I would have said ‘sugar daddy’ arrangement though!

It’s well known that some Instagram models are getting this glamorous life style of travel and designer stuff through being an escort.

I think the danger is (like with instagram as a whole) that there is this illusion of a certain lifestyle and many people don’t understand or think about how it’s achieved. It makes many people feel shit about their own life as a result. Lots of young women unhappy with their appearance, job etc because they are fed a diet of instagram. But it’s all fake. People use face tune, filters, are sent endless freebies, work as an escort to pretend they are something they are not . It’s like the whole thing needs a massive disclaimer on it to say what you are looking at is altered reality. I hate that people just shout oh your jealous when you question it.

Hard to believe it was once just a photo sharing app. What a shame.

CarlottaValdez · 08/09/2020 08:56

Well you seem to think she actually is a prostitute, so don’t really follow your modern day argument.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 08/09/2020 08:56

Thank for the article, it sounds like she probably is.

I suppose it isn't that surprising. I have a friend who was sent some interesting messages after being on Only Connect, of all programmes!

(I wasn't meaning to twist your words, but if you meant drugs, just say that! White goods definitely means large electrical appliances in common parlance.)
