Are social media influencers modern day prostitutes?

I know a girl from school younger than me and we lived in a small village so everyone knows everyone. This particular girl had hardly achieved anything such as a education, while most of my peers including myself went off to university she stayed in the same village and got a job at the local pub. Fast forward 5 years. She is travelling the world, staying in expensive hotels, wearing really expensive handbags (4-5k) and posing in lingerie. She has had a lot of cosmetic surgery and looks very common just like the kardashians (butt implants, nose job, boob job, lip fillers and the whole lot). All her photos are basically in really expensive hotels around the world and in expensive restaurants and bars where someone who has had a low paid job could never afford it. She doesn't model anything in particular such as fashion or accessories as most of her posts are just in lingerie, bedsheet, towel covering her private's or in a skimpy dress with an expensive hand bag in a sky bar and yacht. She has thousands of followers, no bf (mum is friends with her mum) and particularly travels to countries such as Dubai, Bali and Spain- Marbella and Ibiza quite often. Am I wrong to think she is prostituting herself to have this lifestyle? It's of course none of my business but reading recent articles about how Instagram models are approached on social media and a business deal is made to basically prostitute herself to wealthy men particularly from the Middle East it has flagged up and captured my attention as I have been wondering how it's possible to achieve such a lifestyle. She's either doing that or basically transporting white goods I don't know. What do you think? Just wanted to chat.

If sex is involved in exchange for gifts, it is prostitution in my book. If no sex, then not.

Aridane · 08/09/2020 13:59

It’s rare thoug for it to be a direct transactional exchange - eg I will fuck you this evening, stay for up to x2 hours (not overnight), in return for an X designer handbag

She is selling an image. Prostitutes are selling their body. I would say it is more akin to modelling.

So much of this is fake though. Loads of these people just hang around in hotel lobbies or rent a posh car for a weekend then slowly release photos they took.

Desiringonlychild · 08/09/2020 15:28

Some people might disagree but being gifted expensive handbags, free hotel stays isn't the same as a salary. A non uk influencer got sued, she crowdfunded for her legal fees ( don't agree with this) and when she was asked about that, she said 'how can i pay for my legal fees with lipstick'.

Unless she managed to buy a house/get a mortgage with her newfound career, you wouldn't know if she is actually making that much money from this gig. Or if you can see her accounts on companies house!

Influencers are usually given stuff for free if they are high profile because they increase the exposure of the items they are showing off. If they are a nobody they won't. So if this person is being given expensive hand bags, stays in luxury hotels and other stuff, my guess is that she's paying for them one way or another.

Are you talking about Chloe Khan?

bambooplant · 08/09/2020 16:08

Sounds like she’s just like the rest of us - trying to get by in this world. Who really cares how she does it. Sounds like she’s having a great time, lack of education or not. Wish I could be in her position to be honest 😂

bluecheese2412 · 08/09/2020 19:45

@AriesTheRam no not her, but I did get rammed by some of the pp about the common look I mentioned when I meant 'typical' but yes, they look very similar actually

Actually you are not far wrong - its reasonably well known in the industry that the kind of influencers you are talking about are escorts. www.insideover.com/society/instagrams-prostitution-secret.html

I get what you mean, OP and yes, I think a lot of these girls are prostitutes. They travel to meet rich, older men for sex in exchange for money that allows them to buy the designer clothes and holidays they are desperate for.

They tend to have friends who do the same thing and they use the adult site Onlyfans to make more money through pics and videos.

Looking at their Instagram feeds I can see why some people may be jealous ( I don’t think you are!) but knowing what they do to afford it is heartbreaking and I fear for their mental health when they mature and realise the gravity of what they’ve done.
