Are feature walls tacky now? At any rate, what colour is yours?

For reasons that made sense at the time, we painted our living room chimney breast an almost imperceptibly yellower shade of cream than the rest of the room. I'm now thinking about repainting it (partly so I can say I did home improvements during lockdown rather than just watching box sets and ruining both DH's and DS's hair). But what colour? I

if it helps, our living room has a wood floor, brown leather sofa, red and brown rug, light brown curtains (ooh, I could buy new curtains...) Sorry, I'm reluctant to post a photo as we do occasionally get people who dare to venture over the threshold.

That red looks washed out, navy, blues, greens are all very popular,, be bold look at some wallpaper sites! it’s only one wall easy changed.

FizzyPink · 08/09/2020 12:49

I still love our navy blue wall. It’s the same colour as the bottom half of the walls in our hallway so flows through.

We also accessorise throughout with gold tones which look lovely with it.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 08/09/2020 12:51

I'm a bit wary of dark blues/greys as it just doesn't feel like that type of room, iyswim. I don't want to say shabby-chic because I'm not a twat (and it's not chic) but it's in that general ball-park. More importantly, it's not brilliantly lit so I think blue/grey could look a bit depressing. Point taken though about looking for something a bit more vivid than the picture - but no wallpaper! Honestly, if you'd seen my last effort at wallpaper you'd understand Blush

Fuck whatever anyone else thinks.... I love a feature wall and would not care one bit of others thought it was tacky.

I would go for a dark duck egg colour maybe?

SquishySquirmy · 08/09/2020 13:01

Chimney breasts can look great painted in a stronger colour than the rest of the room.

I have one in the living room that is a deep reddish/auberginey shade. The rest of the room is warm off white/pale greige. It works well in that particular room: I love strong colours but painting every wall that shade would have been way too much. It's a lovely, cosy warm colour. Like claret or port.
Like all trends feature walls can be overdone, but there is a reason they became popular in the first place!

BlusteryShowers · 08/09/2020 13:03

There is nothing that hasn't been called tacky by someone on Mumsnet.

I love colour and pattern so I say go for it. My living room is taupe on three walls then a dark aubergine wallpaper on the chimney breast. I love it.

In the kitchen diner I went for all white but with white geometric wallpaper that catches the light on one wall. I've then got bold colourful framed prints of animals etc as it's where the children have their toys.

SBTLove · 08/09/2020 13:03

I’m liking these and considering them 😉

Well I love all white houses so mine and my rentalS looked exactly the Same.
What did both tenants do
Stuck up wallpaper And added a feature wall without permission .
If that wasn’t bad enough, they removed my fire surround and put a new one in, which was fugly.
Then they ripped up my new carpets and put their carpets down and laminate.
Then they ripped out my doors and put new ones in.
Honestly!
Nightmare tenants.

Dowser · 08/09/2020 13:09

They even have the nerve to pay me on time too 😂

AppleKatie · 08/09/2020 13:15

I like them in principle although ours (put in by previous tenants is hideous).

It’s background is black with colourful but dark pattern which looks awful in a room that isn’t well lit. The other walls are brown Hmm

I’ve been trying to save up to change it but I can’t decide what colour will give the illusion of light and space (and i don’t like white). Any suggestions?

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 08/09/2020 13:42

Can you afford new rug, cushions and curtains? If so choose them and pick a colour from them for the wall. I quite like blush pink at the moment, goes well with coppery tones.

Rafflesway · 08/09/2020 13:54

Well I love ours! So much so we redecorated during lockdown and kept exactly the same colour scheme.

Dulux Almond White main walls with Soft Truffle feature wall. This is for the sitting room and the semi open plan formal dining room.

Bingobongo1 · 08/09/2020 14:08

Well if they are I'm out of touch.
I've just painted feature walls in dining and living room in Crown box tree (a sage green) the rest of the room is antique cream. It looks great, I'm looking into oak flooring at the moment to finish it off.

BogRollBOGOF · 08/09/2020 14:20

I like feature walls as they're great for adding strong colour without overwhelming a room. It does depend on the room though. I love the crispness of my DC's white and scarlet/ royal blue bedrooms.

I hate the trend for extensive use of grey throughout. It reminds me of trying to drive on a grim day in January when it doesn't bother getting light.

ChesterDrawsDoesntExist · 08/09/2020 14:32

We have magnolia walls because white was far too difficult to keep white (three kids and fingerprints showed up too much) and a purple feature wall, purple curtains and purple cushions on our brown settees and three pieces of dark mango wood furniture.

I've been desperate to find a purple tartan wallpaper to redo the feature wall but other than the £60 Graham and Brown one (too pricy) it just doesn't exist. I like my feature wall and if I really cared about what everyone else is doing now, I'd have a 'grey' house (ugh).

viccat · 08/09/2020 14:37

I have one, only the wall behind me on video calls. Grin
I don't care if they are tacky anyway. I follow some really interesting interiors accounts on Instagram that have lots of different feature walls/corners etc. and love the look but then I'm generally a fan of lots of colour anyway.

Zaphodsotherhead · 08/09/2020 16:14

My spare bedroom (just moved in) has a black feature wall.

Yes, I wonder about the previous occupants too.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 08/09/2020 16:22

I have a feature wall in my bedroom. It's gold and cream wallpaper. Don't give a fig if other people think it's tacky, it's my house!

Igglepigglesgrubbyblanket · 08/09/2020 16:31

Hahahaha @PlanDeRaccordement ! I'm a total criminal as I have one wall in my office wallpapered and the room is about the size of a cupboard. Please don't call the style police on me, they might notice all sorts of other problems!

AriesTheRam · 08/09/2020 16:36

Pale pink!

tootyfruitypickle · 08/09/2020 16:45

I’m thinking about making the wall behind our sofa f&b sulking room pink. Whole house is magnolia at mo - we moved in a year ago. I’ll be thinking about it another year before any paint is added to a brush though!

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 08/09/2020 19:29

Thanks all. If I can get organised I plan to brave B&Q at the weekend and pick up some samples... Will update!

We worked away and rented out our house for a few years. Our tenants "feature-walled" every room in very bold dark colours (totally disregarding the returning it to neutral clause). We've papered throughout in most rooms and painted over the others but we had some pretty Laura Ashley wallpaper left over from a previous round of decorating so we have one wall papered in our bedroom and it looks lovely.

I think the days of "Wanted-Down-Under-Family-Back-Home-Red-Giant-Poppy-Metallics" are over though.

Well, you can always make a feature wall in your prison cell. Many inmates do. :)
Bluntness100 · 08/09/2020 20:46

No they aren’t, it’s the big floral cheap wllpper that’s the issue. Something that tonally blends in can be very beautiful. The trick is to make it either really funky with one of the expensive wall papers or blend it in.

Chimney breasts are different though, most folks paint them a different colour.
