What to do with cash?

Genuine question. I have £50 in cash and no idea what to do with it

I haven’t used cash in years so only have a card holder - I kept the notes in my card holder but had to fold them to fit in; when I tried to pay them into my bank account the bank pay in machine would not accept them due to the fold. The bank also won’t accept cash over the counter due to COVID.

There’s also nowhere to spend it as to my knowledge, it’s cashless payments only virtually everywhere.

I’ve been using cash throughout the pandemic. The only shop that was card only was recently at Build a bear.

You can spend it no problem Smile

JoJoSM2 · 05/09/2020 20:31

I’m sure corner shops or takeaways wouldn’t mind. Or get your nails done.

Caffè Nero are now accepting cash again, pretty sure most places round me are. What about self checkouts? That's where I used up my cash recently

I pay In cash over the counter now at the post office it's fab.

Who do you bank with they accept many?

Akire · 05/09/2020 20:33

All supermarkets take cash, but ask
To use card if possible.

lljkk · 05/09/2020 20:35

I spend cash most days. I bought a £1 Tango yesterday. Would the market stall guy really accept card payment for that -- is there really no charge on £1 card payment for him? I genuinely don't know.

Cheesypea · 05/09/2020 20:35

I keep cash to use in the local street market. Car boot sale shopping?

Notthisnotthat · 05/09/2020 20:36

TSB wouldn't let me pay cash into my account during lockdown, but I could pay it into my TSB account at a post office.

BertieBotts · 05/09/2020 20:37

Bank account pay in machines can't cope with money that's been folded? That's a new one on me. I often use those and I always fold my money.

Jellykat · 05/09/2020 20:39

Post office with a paying in slip, no problem

fairydustandpixies · 05/09/2020 20:40

I was given two £50 notes for my birthday a couple of weeks ago. The post office won't change it, bank won't accept it. They are virtually worthless. I managed to break one in B&M and I'll go again next week to break the other one. Seems shops will take smaller denominations but not £50s.

hastingsmua1 · 05/09/2020 20:40

Ahh the usual suspects for take away near me (deliveroo, Uber eats, dominos etc) won’t accept cash!

I live in a massive city that has pretty much adopted cashless everywhere, so not many independent shops but I’ll have to take a better look.

I bank with useless Barclays. I might try the post office if they wouldn’t mind accepting my folded in half notes! Failing that I’ll try to get the crease out and use it in a supermarket self checkout till

Tell me how! My card holder is the size of a bank card, so I had to fold the notes a few times to get them to fit.

When I tried to pay it in, the notes wouldn’t stay straightened out by the time the machine closed to count them? The notes would just automatically fold back up.

@hastingsmua1

Are you sure?
My mother refuses to do any thing but cash (or cheques) and she has had no problems.
My partner runs a business that uses cash a lot and he has had no problem paying in cash and even getting cash for change but this is prebagged so reduced risk.

BertieBotts · 05/09/2020 20:44

Just fold them back and forth on themselves a bit so that the fold gets looser and they stay unfolded?

TBF, I have just realised, I am not in the UK any more and so I have never done this with the plastic money, only paper.

Chachacha90 · 05/09/2020 20:44

My sainsburys has allowed cash at the self checkouts, i was in the exact same situation

Littleelffriend · 05/09/2020 20:46

Self service check outs

ItWasntMyFault · 05/09/2020 20:46

Pay it into your bank account at the post office. All you need is your debit card.

cosmo30 · 05/09/2020 20:49

Post office will accept no problem

Sweettoothnomore · 05/09/2020 20:55

Deposit machine inside the bank?

VandalisedVegetables · 05/09/2020 21:00

Send it to me, I'll have no trouble spending it as most places still take cash in the towns around me. Grin

Mummybiscuitx · 05/09/2020 21:03

Pay it over the counter in post office.

MarthasGinYard · 05/09/2020 21:17

'I bank with useless Barclays. I might try the post office if they wouldn’t mind accepting my folded in half notes'

Yes Op they will Smile

hastingsmua1 · 05/09/2020 21:39

Thank you all! Post office visit is the top of my list!

@QuitMoaning which banks are they with? It might just be a branch specific thing but Barclays branch staff said the counter wouldn’t accept cash pay ins. I did wonder what people who predominantly use cash were supposed to do!

FFS, it comes to something when banks won't accept cash any more Hmm what the hell do we pay them for?
