How do you make home cosy for autumn?

What kind of things do you change to make the house cosy?
I am going to put new throws on the sofas, get new candles and look at autumn recipes but was curious what changes others make to mark the change of season.

I like to have a ‘autumn’ clean of the house and get rid of clutter. We spend more time indoors over winter so I just like to see the place tidier.
I do lots more soups and stew type recipes and the kids get through lots of hot chocolate.
Apart from that, I don’t do much more though I have been looking at sine ‘decorate your house for Fall’ sites and wow! Some people are so into all the fall decor. Fascinating.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 05/09/2020 09:50

Nothing, apart from putting the heating on if it’s chilly, and drawing the curtains once it’s getting dark, and lamps lit.
But then I think our house is cosy anyway. At least so I’ve been told by guests. We always have warm throws out anyway, since in the U.K. even summer evenings can be chilly.

I often wonder how people who change curtains and cushions etc. find room to store the ‘wrong’ ones. We have a pretty good amount of storage here but I’d still be hard pushed. Never mind all the faff.

Tumbleweed101 · 05/09/2020 10:58

The curtain fairy lights look nice. My daughter has some in her bedroom.

It isn’t really much effort to change for the seasons. Different throws on the sofa and the ones for spring/summer go onto beds for warmth. Cushion covers etc go in storage with summer clothes. Don’t change curtains or anything bulky. It’s more the decoration such as extra candles, flowers and displays etc. Christmas bits will replace a few of these ie autumn candles became Xmas ones. Then the autumn/winter throws get packed with the winter clothes for storage.

I quite like acknowledging the seasons as it breaks the year up. This year it feels more like I need to as a lot of other key seasonal events have been cancelled both at work and in the community.

I’m looking forward to taking the nursery children out to collect conkers and leaves. I used to do this as a child and then did it with my own. Mine are a bit big to really enjoy it now but it’s nice to carry on this ritual with the little ones at work.

Bake bread, decorate with real pumpkins, buy country life autumn ed

I have fluffier throws in the snug, we put the wood burner on and I swap out my door wreath for an Autumn leaves wreath. Other than that my house is quite cosy anyway since I have loads of different textures everywhere.

Follow Tanya Whitlock and Natascha Ashford on Instagram - queens of autumn cosy decor.

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 05/09/2020 11:19

no changes - we have an autumnal house all year round. IMO nothing says cosy like an artfully draped cat or two.

EmiIyStAubert · 05/09/2020 11:50

We have an autumn garland. Also copper fairy lights, brushed cotton duvet covers come out. And candles, of course.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 05/09/2020 12:05

I have a garland and wreath of autumn leaves, and a string of little mushrooms and acorns which I'll probably run through a pile of pinecones in a bowl on the coffee table. I might try and find a source of conkers as well; I'm not sure where they grow locally, we've only just moved.

I have an extra throw that goes out on the couch, and around now I start burning apple and cinnamonny candles, or smokey pumpkinish ones.

I fancy crocheting something autumnal but can't find anything I like. I might do felt instead...

Magicbabywaves · 05/09/2020 12:59

I wasn’t going to add this for fear of ridicule, but I also have a Garland of Felt leaves Which I hang on the mantle piece. We also have conkers etc in the fireplace.

Horsemad · 05/09/2020 13:27

My Mum always changes the curtains & cushion covers/throws and the duvet covers & bedroom curtains from summer to winter colours.
She periodically moves the furniture round in the living room as well.

I've never done any of this! 😂

Jakadaal · 05/09/2020 13:57

I have an autumnal wreath I hang on the front door (much to the obvious bewilderment of my neighbours)

Sallycinammonbangsthedruminthe · 05/09/2020 17:45

I am autumning my house this very weekend! Its been on my mind now the evenings are drawing in.Up to press all the curtains have come down and the cosy lined ones are going up I dont close curtains in the summer and have light weight ones up just to look nice but come autumn the heavier lined ones are out,They look warm and inviting. The throws are out too but not needed yet but they look nice. In october the summer bedding goes away and winter quilts nd throws are out. I switch on the chest freezer and fill that from end of setember. I change my lamps in the lounge and change the candles and airfreshners to more seasonal smells and pack away all the summer clothes and my fave thing of all is buy new boots! New sexy long boots and get thecoats out and dry cleaned/washed ready to go...I appreciate I am insane but I love getting autumn /winter ready it makes me happy!!

Lazysundayafternoons · 05/09/2020 18:00

Ooo I love this idea.

We usually do a lot of Halloween decorations and Halloween themed fairy lights, and I find they really lift my mood in the dark evenings, so will definitely consider the fairy lights in September.

Must go out for a walk in the morning in search on conkers to keep spiders away.

The fluffy lined throws come back out to the couches here in the autumn and I am in need of new cushions so will look for some in a warm autumn colour.

Candles! I love pumpkin/ baking scents in autumn. TK Maxx usually have some lovely ones in this time of year

Sallycinammonbangsthedruminthe · 05/09/2020 18:19

Gettinglikemymother....those vacumm sealed bags and chuck em under the bed!!!

BrandyandBabycham · 05/09/2020 18:37

DH & I both said at the same time - close the windows & put the heating on! Our house is cosy anyway I think. It’s not old but has a cottagey feel. We moved in nearly 3 years ago from a much bigger house & I immediately felt more at home here. I used to have an oil burner so might invest in a new one & I have an orange & cinnamon candle. At the moment it has a lockdown teddy sitting on it in the lounge window.
Another thing I do is put my summer clothes in the loft. DH despairs that I don’t get round to sorting them out/ getting rid of some so the same heap gets returned.
We are investing in thicker curtains for the bedrooms as we still have the thin ones we bought as a temporary measure when we moved in . Cheeky previous owners took all the curtains without telling us!

GreyGardens88 · 05/09/2020 19:27

It’s because it’s cold outside so they are moving into the warm

Wrong - it's because it's spider mating season and the males are leaving their nests to search for females. That's why you don't see them November to March

Tumbleweed101 · 06/09/2020 08:59

Some nice ideas. I’m glad I’m not the only one who likes acknowledging the changing season and changing things about.

Does anyone make jams/chutneys at this time of year?

RubySlippers77 · 19/09/2020 23:47

@EwwwDavid an autumnal table centrepiece sounds lovely! Did you buy it or make it?

I love the idea of candles around the place but with two small DC blundering around there would soon be a towering inferno... might try the LED tea lights instead, although it's not quite the same. DP likes to have a very clean, minimalist house and I don't find it cosy at all, am interested in all these ideas to sneak a bit more seasonal warmth into the place Grin

Carrigfada · 19/09/2020 23:52

@Bluntness100

Conkers don’t work it’s an old wives tale, I can assure you, because I have had spiders webs on the actually conkers...😂

I don’t do anything for autumn, I find the thought a bit odd. The house is the house, the throws are out all the time on the back of the sofas, I don’t bin them and buy new ones, candles are used till done and then new ones purchased. The only difference is heating on and wood in thr baskets for the wood burners.

This.

Are people talking about hanging autumn-themed floral wreaths on the front door, or something? Or having special winter curtains?

MouseholeCat · 20/09/2020 00:38

So we don't do much in terms of decor but there's more of a shift in the things that we do when autumn comes which gives me that feeling.

I'm in the US in an area with hot humid summers and it's now cool so we're spending so much time outside. A mix of hiking, heavier gardening work and generally being able to sit out on our deck and not sweat like crazy. Also being able to actually eat food like soup again and confortably use the oven feels like a shift!

Our sunflowers and wildflowers were starting to die back so I've been doing flower arrangements for the house while I still can. Also we're getting our last chillis and tomatoes ripening so I'm making salsa and stringing up chillis and herbs to dry. I definitely associate that as our autumn decor.

RubySlippers77 · 27/09/2020 20:38

@MouseholeCat your drying chillis and herbs sound lovely! The DC would wreck anything similar that I tried Confused but then we have a tiny kitchen with no room to move... two days it has taken them to make an indelible stain on my new autumn tablecloth. TWO DAYS!!
