My dh has just told me that he gave her one to eat at lunchtime. Apparently she ate half. He had no idea that they shouldn't be eaten raw. I'm now really worried about her.
Does anyone know if it's likely to harm her?

I didn’t know you couldn’t eat them raw?

JamieFrasersSwingingKilt · 04/09/2020 20:05

I eat them raw. Why can't they be eaten raw? They're yummy and refreshing!

ApolloandDaphne · 04/09/2020 20:05

I eat them raw all the time. They are fine.

Why shouldn't you eat them raw?

MrsTerryPratchett · 04/09/2020 20:06

They can be eaten raw. Beans can't.

Theelderscrolls · 04/09/2020 20:08

I loved raw beansprouts as a kid! I don't think they need cooked.

Witchend · 04/09/2020 20:08

I prefer them raw. They don't often continue to grow and sprout out of your ears, but I do realise that in a 3yo it is less far to grow to do that.

BrokenBrit · 04/09/2020 20:09

I think the worry is over a small risk of E.Coli in contaminated sprouts? I’ve eaten them raw before and been fine, I don’t think it’s a
big issue for most, but something to be aware of and for vulnerable people to avoid eating. Hope your DC is ok OP.
Sure they will be and it won’t be the worst thing they eat!

dementedpixie · 04/09/2020 20:10

Did they say 'ready to eat?

NannyR · 04/09/2020 20:10

They shouldn't be eaten raw as there is a risk they could be contaminated with bugs like salmonella, but I would think the risk of getting ill from eating half of one is tiny.

teezletangler · 04/09/2020 20:11

Are you worried about listeria OP? That's the only issue with raw sprouts, and it's vanishingly unlikely. I don't think anyone actually follows the advice not to eat them raw...

AlternativePerspective · 04/09/2020 20:12

I prefer most raw veg to cooked. I open a pack of sugar-snap peas for stir-fry and then eat half of them before I cook them. Ditto carrots.

I have a real textural aversion to most cooked veg but I love raw.

Feetupteashot · 04/09/2020 20:16

Saw a baby eat a slug recently so think it'll probably be ok x

catsarecute · 04/09/2020 20:26

Wow! I never knew it was an issue. I eat them raw in salads etc, that NHS link is a revelation to me. I think it's unlikely to affect her, I would just keep an eye on her, try not to worry.

Thenneverendingstorohree · 04/09/2020 20:26

Never knew this was a thing. I'm sure she'll be completely fine.

Karwomannghia · 04/09/2020 20:28

They say on the pack not to eat raw as well, I checked because I got a stomach ache once after having a salad made with them.

YouWereGr8InLittleMenstruators · 04/09/2020 20:33

I sprout beans all the time and eat them raw in salads. I've never become unwell, and let's hope your DC will be fine as well.

Josette77 · 04/09/2020 20:37

I eat them raw all the time.

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 04/09/2020 20:40

I had them in sandwiches, and they were lovely (these were mung bean sprouts)
Is that what we're talking about here? Hmm

Hedgesfullofbirds · 04/09/2020 20:47

@Feetupteashot & @Witchend 😂😂😂

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 04/09/2020 20:53

Ooh I could just eat some beansprouts right now.

Pinkyandthebrainz · 04/09/2020 21:12

How dramatic.

birdling · 04/09/2020 21:53

Thank you to everyone who was helpful.

guineapig1 · 04/09/2020 22:09

The risk is vanishingly small - please don’t worry!

HouseSale · 04/09/2020 22:18

I would keep an eye on DD just to be on the safe side. I didn't know beansprouts couldn't be eaten raw until I inadvertently gave my DD severe gastro enteritis with some. She had had loads of raw beansprouts though.
Most likely your DD will be fine as she only had one.
