Where would you go on last minute UK holiday?

I’ve got a week’s annual leave to take in a few weeks and DP and I are looking for somewhere to go. We haven’t been able to plan ahead so it’s pretty last minute! We’re based in London and have no car so would need to be somewhere accessible by public transport and then easy to explore there without needing a car. No DC. Not a city but a small town or similar with easy access to good walks, nice pubs, maybe a bit of sightseeing.

It would be nice to be on the coast but I’m not too fussed.. we were thinking Peak District but understandably the b&bs look pretty booked up already!

Any other suggestions? Smile It doesn’t need to be near London or anywhere we could do day trips from London anyway. Though not 8 hours on a train either!

I'd go to the coast. With the kids back at school it should be a bit quieter now.

Thisisnotnormal69 · 04/09/2020 13:27

Would like to...just there’s too much coast to choose from! If the Peak District is anything to go by, lots of places are still pretty booked up even though schools are back!

I'd base it on hotel availability. There's quite a lot of places you can't get near as they're booked out.

Folkestone

West Sussex is lovely - Chichester, Arundel, Fishbourne Roman Villa, beaches at the Witterings.

East Sussex is nice too - Lewes, Hastings, Rye - all an easy train from London.

Onestepup · 04/09/2020 13:48

Take the train north to Yorkshire.

Thisisnotnormal69 · 04/09/2020 15:33

Thanks for thoughts so far Smile

Train to Chester. Look around the city, train up the coast to Llandudno for the day. Train to Liverpool

tectonicplates · 04/09/2020 15:47

It's true that a lot of places are booked up, but do consider the Isle of Wight if you can. Train from Waterloo to Portsmouth Harbour, ferry to Ryde, Isle of Wight railway to somewhere nice like Shanklin, or buses to various places. One ticket from Waterloo to Shanklin is valid on all three parts of the journey including the ferry.

Do bear in mind that wherever you go, most restaurants are insisting on taking bookings with no walk-ins allowed, so do look up some restaurants in advance.

Oxford. easy drive, gorgeous hotels and lots to do inside and outside :)

Or hampshire and have day trips out to portsmouth and southhampton etc

DeeDimer · 04/09/2020 15:48

I'm biased but what about Tenby? Train all the way (might need to change at Swansea). Then a bus to saundersfoot or train to Carmarthen?

MrsJonesAndMe · 04/09/2020 16:06

I would have said Tenby till I read all the requirements...

Weymouth?

HappyBdayWilson · 04/09/2020 16:09

The Cotswolds

TazMac · 04/09/2020 16:10

As someone above said. North Yorkshire. Harrogate is lovely and lots of walks on your door step.

Lake District? Train toOxenholme or Penrith, then buses and ferries to get around?

I like the Peak District. Public transport is good.

nosswith · 04/09/2020 16:11

Devon I suggest, south of Devon has reasonable public transport and the train is under 3 hours.

minnieok · 04/09/2020 16:13

Try Buxton, it has a station. The palace hotel is Victorian, has seen better days but has faded grandeur. Don't bother with meals there unless it's cheap because there's good places to eat nearby. Groupon had a cheap deal earlier in the week

oldmum22 · 04/09/2020 16:17

We went to Berwick upon Tweed Northumbria and it was stunning. We travelled by train (LNER), The station is walking distance to the town and it was lovely There is a Premier Inn , and a couple of other hotels , but definitely worth exploring the area.

Houseplantmad · 04/09/2020 16:20

Wales - train to Swansea then taxi or bus to Caswell Bay where there are some lovely chalets to rent. The one we stayed in has availability in a fortnight. The area has beautiful beaches, walks etc.

yeOldeTrout · 04/09/2020 16:37

Weather, availability in your price range, public transport access. By the time you narrow all that down, may not be that much choice, anyway.

Thisisnotnormal69 · 04/09/2020 16:47

@TazMac thank you those are good ideas Smile

Whitstable... train straight there from st Pancras or Stratford international

TazMac · 04/09/2020 18:56

@Thisisnotnormal69

I live in the North and do a fair bit of walking so let me know if you have any questions.

As someone else said above, Buxton is also a nice little town, with good walks on its doorstep. Chatsworth House is nearby too.

Annebronte · 04/09/2020 19:00

Alnmouth is a lovely place on the Northumberland coast and, surprisingly, has a direct train to London on the East Coast route.

Thisisnotnormal69 · 04/09/2020 19:01

@AnnaSW1 I have been to Whitstable a few times on day trips, it’s lovely Smile
