Where would you go on last minute UK holiday?

I’ve got a week’s annual leave to take in a few weeks and DP and I are looking for somewhere to go. We haven’t been able to plan ahead so it’s pretty last minute! We’re based in London and have no car so would need to be somewhere accessible by public transport and then easy to explore there without needing a car. No DC. Not a city but a small town or similar with easy access to good walks, nice pubs, maybe a bit of sightseeing.

It would be nice to be on the coast but I’m not too fussed.. we were thinking Peak District but understandably the b&bs look pretty booked up already!

Any other suggestions? Smile It doesn’t need to be near London or anywhere we could do day trips from London anyway. Though not 8 hours on a train either!

@Annebronte I haven’t been that way actually, will look it up!

The North Norfolk coast is lovely.

@AltheaVestr1t Would you recommend anywhere in particular?

I'd go to Norwich then get the train/bus out to the coast. Holt is lovely.

Do you have a 'two together' travel card? Costs £30, but depending where you go and how often on the trains, you can save alot!

Edinburgh is only 4hrs from london on the train! I loved exploring the multiple museums, most was on foot but buses were frequent and easy to get also. Food was amazing!

I also love parts of Kent and Suffolk

North Norfolk with a trip to Norwich

MySaladDays75 · 04/09/2020 19:52

North Norfolk - Thornham, Wells, Holt, Burnham market. There is a bus route along the coast road from Cromer to Hunstanton so you can get on and off and walk from one point to another and get bus back.

yeOldeTrout · 04/09/2020 19:55

You will not manage well in those areas of North Norfolk without a car. The bus service is iffy at best, I suspect stops by 6pm. Probably nothing on a Sunday!

AltheaVestr1t · 04/09/2020 22:27

@Thisisnotnormal69 Cromer, Sheringham, Holt - but I have never been without a car so yes, Punic transport may be a problem!

I know you said not a city - but Edinburgh is wonderful.
Other than that - the Kent coast is easy to get to - Herne bay, Whitstable?

Manolin · 04/09/2020 22:42

The CoastHopper along the north Norfolk coast is good actually and does work on Sundays.

Fly to the Scilly’s and grab a kayak.

Thisisnotnormal69 · 05/09/2020 14:19

@Manolin thanks! Will look up

@agododopushpineapple thanks! I am actually going to Edinburgh for a weekend in a few months but have been before, it is a great city!

I think I’ve probably done quite a few of those Kent towns as they are fairly close for day trips Smile so probably looking for something a little further afield

St Ives.
Train from Paddington to St Erth and then on to St Ives. About 5.5 hours in total.
Beaches, coastal walks, shops, galleries, pubs & restaurants. It has plenty to do!

Thisisnotnormal69 · 05/09/2020 18:30

@melt001 I’ve just looked up train costs and it says £121 return with no railcards! I didn’t know it was that expensive, crazy!

Shrewsbury/Shropshire

We're just back from Broadstairs. 1h 20min from St Pancras.

Lovely place, we go every few years when we fancy a break but CBA to "travel"
