I gave her all my old books from my childhood.

She was so pleased with them. Smug mummy alert.

However....she dog ears them!!

All my books which had never had a bent page in their life suddenly have dog ears every other page

Oh OP! Are you sure she’s yours??

I donated a load of beautifully illustrated books from my childhood (ladybird classics I think) to my old primary school and the kids drew all over them!!

Blackbear19 · 03/09/2020 19:49

Oh dear, console yourself at least she's read themWink!

I did similar with my nephew gave him my books, which where read to death. Then when I eventually had a baby he offered me them back.

Ickabog · 03/09/2020 19:49

This thread needs a trigger warning. Shock I'm traumatised reading about her behaviour. It's a slippery slope. First dog ears, next she'll be book folding. Envy

Ah now, it's not fair to inflict that on another unsuspecting family. You're going to have to abandon her in the woods and leave her to her fate.

..making sure that you take away and hide your copy of Hansel and Gretel beforehand.
LoseLooseLucy · 03/09/2020 19:51

She’d be gone tonight.

Soubriquet · 03/09/2020 19:51

She’s definitely mine. Looks too much like me

And yeah she adores reading but doesn’t treat her books with any respect

Into the woods she goes

Give her a basket of goodies and a nice, red coat for her trip. She won't suspect a thing.
Soubriquet · 03/09/2020 20:46

I better make sure there’s no books in that basket that could used as paper crumbs

Itsrainingnotmen · 03/09/2020 20:47

Ime it won't get better. Dd and I share magazines.
She gets hers wet in the bath!!
I get crispy crusty ones returned!

ShimmeringIce · 03/09/2020 22:28

Dog ears show a book’s been loved! They’re not supposed to look pristine (and I can never keep a bookmark to hand)

CountFosco · 03/09/2020 22:39

My sister deliberately breaks the spine of every book she reads. I refuse to lend her books.

ZolaGrey · 03/09/2020 22:42

I don't trust people who have pristine books, on principle.

WaltzingBetty · 03/09/2020 22:45

Dog ears are fine. Spine breaking is a crime punishable by abandonment!

AdoraBell · 03/09/2020 22:46

I kept my Mr Men books. Neither DD is interested now they are off to Uni this month Hmm

Snobs, the pair of em.

Walkerbean16 · 03/09/2020 22:56

my mother in law lives with us, she reads a book or two a week. i recently found one....IN THE BIN! I thought my toddler had put it in there because who in their right mind would throw a book in the bin?! so i fished it out and gave it to her and dhe said oh no it was me, ive finished it!

Im sorry what?! she buys a new book every week, reads them once and then throws them away! she hasn't done it since Angry

pguppgdown · 04/09/2020 04:25

The joy of cracking the spine, ahh.

disappointingdessert · 04/09/2020 06:42

Ah I think my ds might be yours op. He will return any book he buys if he finds someone has cracked the spine in the shop or been rough with a page.

disappointingdessert · 04/09/2020 06:43

I'll drop him off in the woods and we can do a swopsies.

Soubriquet · 04/09/2020 08:14

Swapsies will work

Ds always wanted a brother

I love a well-read book with dog ears, and I am afraid I also love a cracked spine although I would never do this to a book I had borrowed.

LookAtTheCahhOlivahhhhh · 04/09/2020 08:25

The thought of breaking the spine makes me feel dizzy. I spent my youth carefully reading to the edge so as to keep the spine perfect.

Soubriquet · 04/09/2020 09:37

Ugh cracked spines

Harry Potter books were terrible for this if you got the hardback

If you opened it too far to read the entire spine would fall off. I remember having to tape mine up. Angry

I’ve replaced it now

See I love a well read library book. The smell of books, crinkly pages.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 04/09/2020 10:32

We can't be young and unwrinkled forever and nor can our books Grin
