I gave her all my old books from my childhood.

She was so pleased with them. Smug mummy alert.

However....she dog ears them!!

All my books which had never had a bent page in their life suddenly have dog ears every other page

As others have said, adoption is far too good her her!

DP is a spine-bender. He also writes in books. I am planning a patio!

@CarterBeatsTheDevil

We can't be young and unwrinkled forever and nor can our books Grin
Hush your mouth

My skin will remain baby soft and smooth and so will my books Grin

My sister deliberately breaks the spine of every book she reads. I refuse to lend her books.

That should be a criminal offence.

Timeforabiscuit · 04/09/2020 10:43

Eldest DD has form for waspishly saying "Can you not do that to my book please!" When I open a book I have borrowed a little too far.

She's staying put for now.

People who write in books (unless they are cookery books) should be shot. Why do they think their half formed thoughts and opinions are as important as the authors and all future readers should be subjected to them?
katewitch · 05/09/2020 09:11

I break the spines and bend the pages. If I lend out a book, I want the person borrowing it to do the same! The more battered a book is, the more I know its been read and loved. One of my oldest favourites has been lent out for years and is now taped together!

You will never convince me that my way is the wrong way Grin

Shall I take on your daughter as my apprentice? Wink

I have stopped lending books.

I have very few books in paper form now, most on kindle or audible.

But I do have mt beloved Diana Gabledon signed books in hardback.

DDIL asked to borrow the first one.

She got a hard stare and the password to my audible account. 😂

I remember my 'You want us to do what?' when we were told to write notes on our English Literature texts for GCSE. I was so reluctant to do it, I kept the notes to an absolute minimum and only ever in 2B pencil so they could be removed without leaving a trace.

And then, ten or so years later, I met Evangelical Christians who didn't just write in books, they used brightly coloured pens and HIGHLIGHTERS in their Bibles.

In. Their. Bibles.

It's hardly the Book of Kells to have Jeremiah 29:11 blocked out in Staedler fluorescent yellow with an even clunkier 'translation' in red biro down the margin, is it?

I'm not even religious. But They write in their Bibles.

BlackeyedSusan · 05/09/2020 10:37

ex used to use them as coasters. there is a reason he is an ex.

BlackeyedSusan · 05/09/2020 10:39

telll the bible highlighters that they are supposed to write out the verse by hand in a notebook before highlighting it.

TwentyViginti · 05/09/2020 10:53

All my favourite re-read multiple times books have food stains.

Soubriquet · 05/09/2020 11:42

I stopped lending out my books after my aunt left my Harry Potter in her day for weeks when it was cold and wet outside

The book badly warped and even went mouldy in some places.

I was furious. Especially when it turned out that that edition was one that people pay a lot of money for Angry

Omg I really agree with this. I lent some textbooks to my uni boyfriend and he returned them full of notes written in the margin in BIRO.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 05/09/2020 23:02

I mean that must be firing squad territory
