I have never, I think it’s odd

FourEyesGood · 01/09/2020 08:28

I always wash new clothes, just because I think it makes them feel softer and smell nicer. It’s not just school clothes.

Mrsemcgregor · 01/09/2020 08:32

Definitely not. It would take me a week to get it all washed and dried, use tonnes of water and energy and it’s already clean!! It’s been hanging in the wardrobe for 2 weeks so ample time for any viruses to die.

I usually wash all new clothes as I don't like the 'new' smell on them. For some reason I get told I'm odd for washing new school clothes .

NoWordForFluffy · 01/09/2020 08:32

I always wash new clothes as they're all treated with chemicals in the manufacturing process.

ihearttc · 01/09/2020 08:35

I wash new school jumpers as if not everything gets covered in new jumper fluff the first time they wear them.

badlydrawnbear · 01/09/2020 08:55

No, but now you mention it, I feel like I should have. Mine aren't back at school until Thursday so maybe I will do it today.

HugeAckmansWife · 01/09/2020 09:00

Only the shirts because it softens the collars a bit, nothing to do with Covid.

purpledagger · 01/09/2020 09:02

Yes.

One year on holiday, my nephews suitcase went missing and we bought him some emergency clothes. He kept itching in a reply delicate place and the pharmacist said it was something in the swimming shorts.

vapeinafleshlight · 01/09/2020 09:40

@Mrsemcgregor I don't wash it either but I'm wondering why it would take a week to get washed and dried? How do you wash it normally then?

cloudbread · 01/09/2020 09:47

I am only washing it on a 30°

dementedpixie · 01/09/2020 09:49

Yes I do (and did). Makes them softer and less rigid

Mrsemcgregor · 01/09/2020 09:53

@vapeinafleshlight I live in a small flat with no outside space or tumble drier. I have too many children for said small flat who’s school uniform consists of annoying heavy wool trousers (x 3 each) and blazers (x2 each)! It’s all temporary thank god, but yes I believe if I was to wash ALL the uniform it would take about a week to get it done!

In term time I do a daily wash that consists of 3 x trousers, shirts and jumpers. Unless I use the radiators they would not be dry for 36-48 hours on the airer.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 01/09/2020 09:53

No, I never bother.

minnieok · 01/09/2020 09:55

No, I don't wash new clothes ever

mimi14 · 01/09/2020 09:57

I do, but nothing to do with covid, I always have. I hate the factory smells on the clothes.

ASchuylerSister · 01/09/2020 09:59

I do because my kids hate the smell of new clothes. Nothing to do with corona, always done it.

Galvantula · 01/09/2020 10:03

Yes as we have sensitive skin and have had bad rashes from wearing new stuff in the past.

supadupapupascupa · 01/09/2020 10:06

New clothes and bedding I was told are sprayed with chemicals to help prevent creasing. Therefore you should wash them first. Also the iron in labels I bought say to wash the clothes first.

imissthesouth · 01/09/2020 10:10

I normally do this, not just for school clothes but all clothes, i want them to smell of my laundry stuffHalo

woopsie · 01/09/2020 10:18

I always wash them as I worked in retail when I was student and know how they are handled before selling. Plus I like to iron the shirts myself as new clothes are really rigid.

Prettybluepigeons · 01/09/2020 10:22

@Mrsemcgregor can I recommend this?
www.lakeland.co.uk/24909/Dry%3ASoon-Deluxe-3-Tier-Heated-Airer

Expensive but the bomb quite frankly. Plug it in, washing on, cover over and the next day everything is dry. Much cheaper to run than having the heating on and warms the room too plus it makes everywhere smell lovely.

I don't wash new uniform. It gets worn once and then washed anyway.

I was new bedding or towels though.

Mrsemcgregor · 01/09/2020 10:29

@Prettybluepigeons thank you! That may actually save my sanity!!!

ExclamationPerfume · 01/09/2020 10:32

I always wash new clothes. They can be covered in chemicals.

Prettybluepigeons · 01/09/2020 10:34

@Mrsemcgregor make sure you get the cover too. Its not as effective without.
