Chelsea boots, Dr Martens - worth the money?

Are Dr Martens boots worth the money?

These days I have a bad back and cheap shoes make it much worse and give me foot pain (oh the joys of ageing!). So, this year I have decided to put some money behind a good pair of Chelsea style boots, hopefully to last a few winters, save my feet and back and generally be more sustainable.

Have you got some? Can you give me a review or give me some other good recommendations for Chelsea boots that are comfy and supportive.

Currently trying to break my DMs in. Everyone keeps telling to stick at it as they will be the best thing I own. But currently feels like I am walking around with 2 bricks and pack of venus razors on my feet....

WisestIsShe · 31/08/2020 15:48

Yes they absolutely are. So comfy. Go with everything. Last for ages. Quite expensive but definitely worth it.

Fishfingersandwichplease · 31/08/2020 15:49

Got mad redundant 8 years ago and splashed out on a bright pink pair - they are still going strong and are as comfortable than ever - ok so l don't wear them loads but l reckon l will get at least a few more years out if then and won't hesitate replace them when the day comes - getting glittery ones next time!

I got some last winter and they are so incredibly comfy. On my feet all day so I've definitely worn them a lot. Looking forward to the colder months when I can whip them out again!

Watching with interest as I hope to buy a pair this autumn.

buckeejit · 31/08/2020 16:00

I love them, although the sole is quite thin on the Chelsea boots compared to the normal DMs.

Wear a pair of thin pop socks under your socks when breaking them in.

SchmooobyDoo · 31/08/2020 16:03

I’ve had two pairs of the thin-soled DM Chelsea boots. Hard-wearing & they look & feel great. Highly recommend.

greytminds · 31/08/2020 16:04

Following with interest as I really fancy a pair too.

Useful blog post on breaking them in if you do go for it.

Two/three pairs of socks on with the boots, heat them up with the hairdryer and walk until they cool and then repeat, should at least make them feel a little more comfortable.

I used to love dms, lived in them for decades but can't seem to get on with them now so have switched to the fly ones which have Sen me through 2 winters so far and are so comfy.

PaperMonster · 31/08/2020 16:42

When in the office I usually wear a pair of DMs which are about 25 years old. The ones I’ve bought over the past few years haven’t needed breaking in like the old ones did.

BluebellsGreenbells · 31/08/2020 16:45

A lot of people give up trying to break them in. Hence loads of hardly worn DMs on eBay and the like.

MimsyBorogroves · 31/08/2020 16:55

I've got the fur lined DM Chelsea boots. They've done me two winters so far and are lovely and comfy - I adore them. They were quite tight feeling at first but broke in within a week.

Totally worth it. I have some brown DM Chelsea boots which I bought 2-3 years ago. They are really soft, needed no breaking in at all and are super comfortable. I can wear them all day and they don't rub or pinch at all. Love them!
I also have a pair of classic 8 hole boots in cherry red which really did need some breaking in. They are broken in now but still quite new so not quite as comfy as the Chelsea boots yet.

AnyFucker · 31/08/2020 17:01

Yep. My absolutely most favourite purchase in the last 12 months has been my fur lined DM chelsea boots.

Comfy from the 1st day I barely have them off my feet when the temperature is below 18deg.

If these get lost or wear out (unlikely for years I reckon) I would buy the exact same pair again

Ginisatonic · 31/08/2020 17:03

I have a pair of DM boots. Not Chelsea Boots. Could be described as biker boots. Comfy from day 1 and when polished look as good as new. Think this will be their fourth winter.

InDeoEstMeaFiducia · 31/08/2020 17:06

I prefer the Fly London ones and found them easier to break in.

Ginisatonic · 31/08/2020 17:09

Just browsed their website and notice they have 10% off your first order and also free returns.

Elwynne · 31/08/2020 17:12

Wow thanks everyone! It sounds like most of you love them so I think I will take the plunge, hopefully they arent too hard to break in...

Docs are very comfortable and hard wearing. However please visit the Dr martens factory shop in Wellingborough. I have had some bargains from there. £50 for a black sparkly, extra thick sole boots which are £150 full price, shoes for £30 t hug at should have been £95. I can give more examples. However there are not many different sizes etc you get what is there. Mind you I have always come away with a beautiful pair of shoes or boots for a heavy discount.

Ghostlyglow · 31/08/2020 19:01

DMs are still great despite what some people want to tell you. Shop around for sales - I just got some sparkly black ones from Schuh.

NeonBella · 31/08/2020 19:47

I have many different styles of dms and I find when breaking them in those stick on gel pads really help.
In fact, it's been so long since I've worn anything other than sandals that I think I'll be putting them back in my boots and shoes.
My feet have gone soft!

Dms are fab and last pretty much forever, and once you've broken them in they're super comfortable.

SchmooobyDoo · 03/09/2020 07:53

Got five good years out of my DM biker boots. Then they survived another year... Looking to replace them now, if I can get the same again.

itwilldropoff · 03/09/2020 07:58

I’ve got the fur lined Chelsea boots, so bloody comfy and didn’t need breaking in at all, comfy from the first wear.

I’ve only had them one winter but they still look like new so I think they’ll last years and I’ve worn them on cooper days over the summer too.
