At what age did your dc switch to mum instead of mummy?

Or your regional variants!

Ds is 9 and still calls me mummy (which I love) but I've noticed most of his friends now say mum.

Is there a 'normal' age to switch to mummy? Was it child led or did you encourage the change?

I just don't want him to ever be made fun of.

Not something I had noticed until I saw your thread but it made me realise my 7 year old now calls me mum. My 4 year old still calls me mummy though, phew!

BanditsBum · 30/08/2020 19:42

DS has just turned 7 and still calls me mummy at home but I have been firmly 'Mum' in public since last year. The sad thing is that DD is only just about to turn 4 and is copying him!

For some reason DH stopped being Daddy and just became Dad at about four with my eldest.

RobinlovesCormoran · 30/08/2020 19:43

Mine is nearly 14, and used to say Mummy. She doesn't like saying Mum so she compromised with Mama. Her DF is still Daddy.

I found starting school was the game changer.

Mine are all grown now and only call me mummy if they want a lift or money...

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 30/08/2020 19:45

Mine are 16 and 13 and still call me mummy Smile
They refer to their dad as Daddy but call him dad to his face because their step siblings teased them when they called him Dad :(

PegasusReturns · 30/08/2020 19:46

My teens still call me mummy or mumma when friends are around.

I’ve not encouraged it but I love it

BikeRunSki · 30/08/2020 19:47

I’m Mummy to DS(11) and awkwardly “Mum” in public. I’m Mama to dd(8).

MinesAPintOfTea · 30/08/2020 19:47

At 8 DS calls my mummy or mama at home. Mum in front of friends though (got to be cool guy)

ProfessionalTeaDrinker · 30/08/2020 19:49

Mine are 7 and 5 and switch between the two really. In public I'd say the eldest calls me mum more but the odd mummy still creeps in

Redcups64 · 30/08/2020 19:49

My eldest has always called me mum. My youngest calls me mummy, but is still young.

MarshaBradyo · 30/08/2020 19:50

Age 15 and under still Mummy

AlexaShutUp · 30/08/2020 19:51

Mine is 15 and still calls me mummy.Smile I'm "mum" when she is talking to her friends about me, but she never calls me that. If she needs to address me in front of her friends, I usually get something random like "mi madre"!

idril · 30/08/2020 19:52

Mine are 13 and 14 and still call me Mummy. I've suggested they switch to Mum but the oldest refuses and the youngest tried but gave up.

In the South it seems to be much more acceptable to stick with Mummy than it was in the North where I grew up. Plenty of their peers still say Mummy.

I do worry a bit about it sounding weird when they are adults but I can't force them!

FightMilkTM · 30/08/2020 19:54

I’m 27 and still say Mummy, Blush but I refer to her in conversation as ‘my Mum’, so people only know if they see us interacting.
I didn’t do it on purpose, I think I just missed the ‘Mum’ boat and then it got weird to call her a different name.

trickyex · 30/08/2020 19:55

My 15 and 13 year olds call me Mummy at home, but also random weird things like Madre! But I dont like Mum so am happy with anything other than that....

TheMarzipanDildo · 30/08/2020 19:57

FightMilkTM Same. In public she is ‘mum’, but at home still mummy

RedskyAtnight · 30/08/2020 19:58

They switched between the 2 for years. It became firmly "Mum" once they got to secondary school age.

Justjoinedforthis · 30/08/2020 20:00

It’s always just been mum over here.

Trailing1 · 30/08/2020 20:01

7 year old sometimes says mum instead of mummy. I feel like it's too soon for that change Sad

Cherryup · 30/08/2020 20:01

Thank you, seems like I might still be a mummy for a while then.

Quite like the sound of Madre though!

Generally when they stat school, but it isn't something You change, it comes from them.

Delbelleber · 30/08/2020 20:09

Mummy went about age 4 here Hmm

Chicchicchicchiclana · 30/08/2020 20:11

Can't remember. Maybe at about 10 or 11? My ds (nearly 17 and a right pita a lot of the time) calls me Mummy when he wants something or when he's texting.

Tiggerdig · 30/08/2020 20:12

About 7. Why would you mind being mum not mummy? I would hate my teens to call me mummy it would feel so wrong to me personally based on my upbringing and experience.

NetballHoop · 30/08/2020 20:13

Around half term of year 7 for my eldest. The rest switched somewhere in year 6, but by then I'd already been through the "trauma" and honestly didn't care as much.

(apologies to the younger #NetballHoops, but that's life.)
