At what age did your dc switch to mum instead of mummy?

Or your regional variants!

Ds is 9 and still calls me mummy (which I love) but I've noticed most of his friends now say mum.

Is there a 'normal' age to switch to mummy? Was it child led or did you encourage the change?

I just don't want him to ever be made fun of.

My dc (25 and 18) can switch on and off from Mummy depending on their bank balances.

Crylittlesister · 30/08/2020 20:15

Mine started with Mum about 9, but very interchangeable with Mummy. Now she's 14 I'm mum or mother.

SillyBub · 30/08/2020 20:15

DS 13 and DD 10 still both call me Mummy. I'm happy to be Mum now but it's not happening and I'm not forcing it. It's over 2 years since DS said with some conviction that he would no longer be calling me Mummy and I would be Mum from them on. He's not called me Mum once!

All their friends call their mums 'Mum' and mine refer to me as their mum. But as a name?Mummy I remain.

DS was around 7 I think, although when he was 2-3 he went through a phase of calling me by my first name - I was a childminder and he heard the older kids calling me by my name.

DD is 5 and I’m still Mummy to her.

Talcott2007 · 30/08/2020 20:19

Oh my goodness - DD is coming up to 4 1/2 and for the last few days has been calling me Mum - its slightly jarring wasn't expecting this until maybe preteen? We have always had a mix of Maman/Mummy and Papa/Daddy thrown around the house being a bilingual family but something about 'Mum' feels just odd! I'm not making a big deal about it in the hope its a just a phase!

JenniferSantoro · 30/08/2020 20:20

My 20 year old calls me Mumma.

TheNoodlesIncident · 30/08/2020 20:21

We became Mum and Dad much earlier than I anticipated, I think DS was about four. No idea why, but it was a really sudden switch. One day he gave a "Best Daddy" mug to DH for Father's Day, the day after it was Dad only and stayed that way. I went from Mummy to Mum at the same time.

Sometimes it's maybe because other kids have laughed and declared it babyish to say Mummy/Daddy, but I can't imagine that happening in reception. I'd expect the majority to still be using those terms really.

Pertella · 30/08/2020 20:21

DS is 8 and I am mummy at home but mum in public

sitckmansladylove · 30/08/2020 20:21

Mine still call me mamma/mummy (early primary)
I live in Ireland and find a lot of men and women still call their mums 'mammy'

witchofthenorth · 30/08/2020 20:24

I'm mummy or mumma at home. Mum when they are out in public. Sometimes mother Hubbard 🤔

DryIce · 30/08/2020 20:25

Gosh my 2yo started calling me by my first name over lockdown Hmm

So I'm that, otherwise a mixture of Mum and Mummy

Lollypopsun · 30/08/2020 20:32

My DC is 11 and calls me Mammy

milkysmum · 30/08/2020 20:32

I'd say both mine switched about age 6/7 to mum. 12 year old has recently started calling me mother though for some reason....?

june2007 · 30/08/2020 20:36

I still say Mummy. My children use both.

aToadOnTheWhole · 30/08/2020 20:42

My DS is 3 and has recently started addressing me as 'Mother'. Assuming it's because DH will say "you need to go and ask your mother" and such.

But a tiny boy in Tesco going "Mother, shall we get some olives?" makes me sound like a right knobhead.

BlueJag · 30/08/2020 20:47

I've never been called Mummy ever. I'm Mum or mamá even mother sometimes. He is 14 now. I don't mind.

ladybee28 · 30/08/2020 20:52

My mother used to get really upset at the thought of me ever calling her Mum, and insisted on 'Mummy'. But it made me cringe, particularly once I got into my late teens and 20s.

So I stopped calling her anything; I just started sentences with what I wanted to say, and never called through to her from other rooms. I don't think she noticed, but it did make for some awkward sentences on my part.

Vinorosso74 · 30/08/2020 21:36

My 10yo calls me 'M' or 'Msy'

CherryPavlova · 30/08/2020 21:41

I’m generally “mummy” when being asked something still. Described as “my mother”. Occasionally there are variants - mumma, muzz or similar.

Thneedville · 30/08/2020 21:43

I still call my mum Mummy and I’m 46. And not posh!

I just didn’t feel the need to change what I called my parents due to peer pressure.

I would say ‘my mum’ when talking about her though.

Actually my grandparents called each other ‘mummy’ and ‘daddy’ even when the kids were long since grown and when they were living on their own, it was very sweet.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 30/08/2020 21:45

My DD still calls me Mummy - she is 22 and entirely her choice. My own mother flatly refused to be "mum" so she's always mother; mummy sounds too childish from a 50 year old (in my view - my sister is 62 and calls her mummy).

DrMadelineMaxwell · 30/08/2020 21:52

I remember nervously asking my Mum whether I could call her that instead of Mummy when I was about ten.

My kids called me Mum from about y3 onwards.

Now they are teens, they often call me Mother instead.

TokyoSushi · 30/08/2020 21:53

DS is 9, I'm still firmly mummy at home but awkwardly transitioning yo Mum in public Sad

Witchend · 30/08/2020 21:54

Mine varied between my middle who switched to "mum" before her big sister (I think she was around 3/4yo at the time) and one who would call me "mummy" or even "mumma" when tired/ill/wanting reassurance into their teens-although never in front of anyone else.

I've let them lead it because I can remember feeling embarrassed at school when I referred to "mummy" and realised everyone else said "mum". I think I'd have been about 8yo at the time.

Oh yes, I get "Mother" from one when he's displeased or questioning something!

Along the lines of "Mother, do you realise there is nothing to eat in the fridge except cheese..."
