Period pains feel like labour

Motherofmonsters · 28/08/2020 18:27

I think my first period since having DD 11months is on the way and it is so painful.

It literally feels like I'm in labour.

Is there anything I can do to bring it on hoping that might ease it a bit.

A tot of brandy is excellent for period pains, possibly not for labour though ...

I had my first period when DC was 18 months old and it was like my body had stored up 18 months worth of cramps and blood and threw it at me over 3 days. It was foul - and also 16 years ago and I still remember how bloody awful it was.

Before I went on the pill, my period pains were like labour pains, you have my sympathies, the only relief I got was heat, baths, hot water bottles etc and co codamol took the edge off. Hope you feel better soon

I remember that thread. She had her baby. Think you can find it if you search "wind or baby".

I didn’t have my first period after DS for around 10 months. It was absolute agony, it was like contractions pains all over again, I had to stay curled up on the sofa with a hot water bottle and dose up on painkillers for the first couple of days.

My first period after DS2 was really bad I had back ache and really bad cramping also just felt like labour pain it eased after a couple of days after starting
I would do another pregnancy test just to be on the safe side though just to rule that out

Motherofgremlins - I'm mostly calm as I'm 99% sure it's just period pains.

I'm also not worried if I am having a baby other than being totally unprepared and not really sure what to do with DD as she still wakes every 2 hours for milk and i have none in the freezer

Maybe the test wouldn’t work- but you’ve just said it’s easing off - does that not sound a bit like labour (?)...
My first periods after DC were blood first, gushes, lots of them (sorry TMI) and relatively little pain (maybe as I had had c-sections it made a difference?).
Obviously we are all different.
If you are fairly certain it’s period impending try paracetamol and ibuprofen as a pp suggested..?

I've had a few horrendous labour pain type periods. Literally contracting, gripping cushions. Occasionally passing a clot or just a big flow of blood. Weirdly it helped if I could do a poo... Not sure why. Hope you feel better soon OP.

I'm sorry to ask, but if you had a faint positive test a few months ago, is there any chance it could be an early miscarriage?

If you’re breastfeeding then I think you’d have noticed a reaction from your current DC if you were nearing the end of pregnancy. Your milk would have returned to colostrum for the new baby and it tastes bitter not sweet like normal milk. Is your DC talking? Have they mentioned anything about you milk?

I guess in this situation given you were concerned you were pregnant I might do a test just to reassure myself.

Perhaps call your GP if it’s no better tomorrow. Take some paracetamol and have a hot bath. Hope you feel better soon.

My first period after DS was pretty awful and I too was breastfeeding / still am breastfeeding. Sympathy 💐

There's something called cryptic pregnancy, I think, where you don't find out you're pregnant until late on or even in labour.

However faint line on test normally means positive.

My periods got so bad that I have an endometrial resection. I was having contractions all the time, and double-heavy periods due to a bicornuate uterus...I have two separate wombs that both decide to shed each month so not fun. Medical procedure was life-changing, but I did not want any more children. Turns out it was fibroids and 26 polyps and benign tumours found during surgical examination that were causing massive blood loss. While on the wait list, I found the following useful: pads not tampons (or nappies for overnight), bend over doggy style during contractions (not dignified but it relieves the pressure), heat pads from poundland, solpadine, naproxen from the GP (that is an anti-inflammatory) and mefenamic acid reduced flow. Once you stop BF, you may wish to look into contraceptive pills that reduce period flow/ frequency, but if this continues please insist your GP refers you to a gynaecologist for follow-up. No one should live in misery over their reproductive lives.

I have fibroids and periods really painful. Doesn't have to be labour
(Nb fibroids not dangerous just in case you were worrying)

My pre DC periods were like labour. I only realised when I was in proper labour and it didnt really register. It wasn’t until there was an actual baby that I felt short changed at having to work through “labour” pains two days a month for the previous decade. My periods were lots longer than labour too..... although I am pleased to report only mild pain since childbirth. Good luck OP.

Erm that you apparently had a positive pregnancy test and haven't done anything about it because you have been "drinking tea" and you didn't with your other pregnancies.

How is that reason enough to rule out a pregnancy.

That's not how it works.

Timing is awful but I would recommend talking to your GP about contraception after this. The implant often makes people’s periods a lot lighter and less frequent. Mine became more frequent but still a damn sight less painful so I’m happy. In the meantime, I’m sure all the advice in the world won’t be of any use to you right now, I’m sorry
