Fed up with all the mixed coronavirus messages eg social distancing , but you can fly ???

I am fed up with it all .

You can fly and sit next to a complete stranger on a plane with recirculating air , but people can’t go into an office ?

Shops, bars etc open , people everywhere where I live , little distancing going on , yet these same people are working from home .

People are picking up products in shops and putting them back , you were not supposed to do this , yet we can’t try things on ? Clothes also quarantined on return , yet people handling them on shop floor.

Not wearing face masks on pubs and restaurants, where people are very close together . People are going out with lots of different households - you are not supposed to do this . Then worry about their kids going back to school or they want to wfh ?

I am starting to find it all a bit bizarre ,

I have no idea about the flying as our holiday was cancelled.
I do agree in a way with the mixed messages.
Somethings can’t be avoided such as picking up a product and putting it down if it’s the wrong thing for example. Or moving things out the way (clothes for example are in size order).
Pubs and restaurants where I live you have to wear a mask unless your meal is in front of you and you must put it back on to go to the toilet.

Bagelsandbrie · 28/08/2020 08:39

Completely agree with everything you’ve said. As someone who is / was in the clinically vulnerable category none of the current situation makes any sense whatsoever. It’s all a load of shit.

zigaziga · 28/08/2020 08:40

People aren’t sitting next to each other on most flights as the middle seats are generally out of action (BA etc) and there is something with the air being replaced every 3 minutes?

But yeah I think the rules in shops about trying things on are a bit OTT 🤷‍♀️ A lot of time it’s just for risk assessment purposes and to show / pretend they’re doing something I think.

I haven't flown yet, but I think not all seats are being used and masks are compulsory so probably safer than the local Asda!

I'm not in the UK, but friends over there do seem a bit fed up with what seems to be a lack of "absolute" rules, yet if you follow the "recommendations" they are a lot stricter than other countries's "rules" iyswim? But because they're all a bit "really you should do this", people don't. There seems to have been a lot of expecting the public to do the right thing rather than telling them.
That's the impression I get.
Here we can go to pubs, restaurants etc, but have to wear masks. Changing rooms etc are all open. We can mix with whoever we want. (There has never been any rule about families, or bubbles etc, we had total lockdown, then we didn't- fewer rules but stricter possibly)

MGMidget · 28/08/2020 08:42

Its propoganda in my view aimed at keeping the economy going and avoiding too many complicated issues over preventing virus spread. I was very cynical about the government’s stance on NOT wearing face masks for months before they changed their minds. They were having difficulty supplying PPE to hospitals so didnt want the public buying up the face masks! In Asia they have been wearing face masks for years to reduce virus spread. I cant believe that foreign travel, especially airline travel doesnt increase virus spread but its all about helpingthe tourism industry with reciprocal travel arrangements with other countries and keeping the airlines in business. I think you just need to exercise your own common sense now and consider what your own attitude to the risk of CV 19 is rather than taking much notice of official ‘advice’ on the risks.

Walkley18 · 28/08/2020 08:45

Agree. My v small team don't want to go back to office for our pre lockdown usual one morning a week meet up, but I bet they've eaten out this month.

Charliescar · 28/08/2020 08:52

WFH will be the final nail for town and city centres. Without people working there , popping out in their lunch hour to look round shops , grab coffee on way to work , going for drinks after work , going to gym after work , people are buying clothes for work , I could go on and on .

There are so many jobs connected to people working in city centres , these will all be lost . It’s going to have a dire effect on our economy and also I think cause a slight class divide .

Charliescar · 28/08/2020 08:54

@Walkley18 that’s interesting isn’t it , I was wondering if other people were thinking that too .

I work in an office , but I am still furloughed- I am desperate to go back to work . I really don’t want to be looking for a new job with millions of offered

SnuggyBuggy · 28/08/2020 08:55

It makes me a lot less willing to follow the rules to be honest

SoupDragon · 28/08/2020 08:58

I think it's to do with how many people are doing a particular thing. Very few are flying compared to how many would be in offices/shops/trying stuff on/whatever.

I have very little idea what we can and can't do any more - I'm just trying to apply common sense now.

ScrummyDiva2 · 28/08/2020 09:05

I've flown this week ( to Ireland to see family for the first time since lockdown). The flight was full. No empty seats. ( EasyJet) The only difference was being boarded by seat number, and asked not to stand when airplane landed- disembarked row by row. So no social distancing at al!!

linmanuel · 28/08/2020 09:06

I went on holiday (wouldn't have been entitled to a refund if we didn't go) and flew with jet2 and my party of 6 was split over 4 rows with 4 of us sitting next to strangers
So no they aren't always leaving spaces on the flights

Charliescar · 28/08/2020 09:08

This is what I find strange - flying. It’s not really necessary , but there is no social distancing, planes are apparently filthy and germ fests - yet people won’t go to the office ?

Or worried about sending kids to school ?

I live in a small city that relies heavily on tourism . Since the restaurants opened in July it is heaving again . We have people from abroad visiting too .

It’s summer now , but these people will go home and out city centre will be dead again .

OP posts:
lampshadery · 28/08/2020 09:32

I don't think it's a case of people 'won't go in the office' - I think most do what their boss tells them. While some will be given the choice, most aren't calling the shots. They might be fine with being in the office but aren't allowed.

And some will prefer working from home for non-Covid reasons.

Newjeansrippedjeans · 28/08/2020 09:36

It's very frustrating. The 'rules' are bad enough but then you have people who are indignant they shouldn't be getting public transport and need to be working from home, but then a few minutes later I see they're hugging friends in the pub and are going on a mini holiday abroad. Hmm

Charliescar · 28/08/2020 09:45

@Newjeansrippedjeans I know ! And they put their kids on buses to school!

Nobody seems to be catching buses anymore- I am surprised the bus companies are still running !!

Userwhatevernumber · 28/08/2020 09:57

We can go to the pubA and restaurants and sit relatively close and laugh and talk loudly without a mask on

Yet we are not allowed to sing in churches or choirs eve man with social distancing?

It’s designed to promote money and discriminate certain groups.

TheSeedsOfADream · 28/08/2020 12:39

Well I just picked someone up from the airport...my temp was checked twice and theirs hasn't been checked at all! I drove 20 mins, she flew across Europe.

Charliescar · 28/08/2020 15:17

It’s nuts! I have just been into my small city centre - it’s rammed !!! People everywhere cafes full !

Yet I saw none of the usual office workers out at lunch time . I just find it nuts !

Walked past building site - absolutely no social distancing going on there , no social distancing with staff working behind counter in coffee shop !

OP posts:
Megantheestallion · 28/08/2020 15:37

Well I think it is the cumulative effect of everyone doing a little bit combined?

You sound like it's not the mixed messages you are bothered about - you are concerned about the economy.

I think we have to accept that it's not an all or nothing. Businesses will be slow, but isn't that better than closed ?

Charliescar · 28/08/2020 16:31

I am concerned about everything. Of course the economy is important- we all depend on it .

I am just not getting how somethings are ok and others aren’t - when it just seems unsafe .

OP posts:
Charliescar · 28/08/2020 16:32

Also @Megantheestallion I am not sure why businesses are slow now ?

We went on a flight recently (fully masked and anti-bacced) and we’re on the plane for 90 minutes, twice in a fortnight. I’m still bricking it about starting to see clients again, for hours at a time, when my office reopens in two weeks.
MrsWooster · 28/08/2020 16:36
