Now I’m going to get it out there I love Christmas, I have the house all decorated in the first weekend in December!! And all the presents bought and wrapped. But just seen a full blown Christmas section on this morning!! Christmas Trees decorations! apparently there already is a Christmas channel on Sky and a Christmas radio station!! John Lewis have opened up there Christmas department. It’s just to early Let’s get Halloween and bonfire night over with. Mince pies in the supermarket in September!! Really, well one will not pass my lips till 1st December, then plenty will go in for the next 28 days.

Christmas is a wonderful time of the year, but i think we should keep it until December, otherwise we might all just get board with it and it won’t be special because it started before the last summer bank holiday!!

Hobbycraft has their Christmas stuff out already. (But I love it!)

Serena1977 · 27/08/2020 13:40

I think people are thinking/doing nice things in preparation to cheer themselves up and companies are desperate for sales.

I'm preparing early because if I leave it late and there is lockdowns/school closures as autumn/winter kick in, then I don't want to be without anything because that would be miserable especially after this year.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 27/08/2020 13:42

Mince pies in the supermarket in September!!

Tbf I think mince pies should be available all year round anyway.

Home bargains were putting out Christmas cards this morning. I know the delivery of post is taking a bit longer, but it seems a bit early, even to a Christmas lover like me.

MJMG2015 · 27/08/2020 13:45

I too LOVE Christmas, but I'd FAR rather it didn't start until after Halloween!

However, it's no earlier this year than past years, there's always something before the kids go back to school after the SUMMER holidays! (Absolute bloody madness)

Alwaystheoddoneout · 27/08/2020 13:45

Don't they need to deal with Halloween first?

Kaktus · 27/08/2020 13:46

I’m normally a ‘keep Christmas to December’ type but we’ve got fuck all else to look forward to at the moment so I might start earlier this year.
Whatever cheers people up.

nikkylou · 27/08/2020 13:57

Craft stores are allowed to have their christmas stuff out...mainly as if you're doing Christmas crafts, you want them done...before Christmas, and things like cards might be started in september if you have loads to make and only spend a couple of hours a week etc.

Other stores. Its ridiculous and a little sad the 'spend spend spend' starts so soon. Even more sad is the bells have barely stopped ringing before they are shoving it away and getting out the easter eggs and valentines chocolates.

They barely even wait till Christmas day to reduce it and leave the shelves practically empty in the final days....

Blobby10 · 27/08/2020 13:58

I remember going to BHS years ago on the August bank holiday monday and they had their Christmas stuff out. Far too early in my opinion.

AriettyHomily · 27/08/2020 13:59

I don't normally get involved in it until December but I have to admit to forward planning this year with CV.

Deathraystare · 27/08/2020 15:02

You are a bit slow, should have had the sprouts on since February!

I notice Tesco and the Co op have those tubs of Roses/Quality Street/Heroes and packs of them too.

mummabear1967 · 27/08/2020 15:04

It’s August. Can we not refrain talking about Christmas until at least late November Hmm

TerribleCustomerCervix · 27/08/2020 15:08

This x a million.

I’m usually the person muttering under their breath about Tesco’s having the tubs of Celebrations on offer before Halloween is even over.

This shit-show of a year however has had me buying Christmas decorations in August. Just a few tree decorations as a optimistic way of looking forward to something that isn’t Covid related.

skankingpiglet · 27/08/2020 15:12

Personally I think it would be wise to get all xmas stuff in ASAP this year. I don't think there will be another lockdown, but I could see some shops being closed or supply lines disrupted. I have made a start on smaller xmas presents, and will start gathering other bits as soon as the schools are back. I aim to be 'done' (bar fresh stuff) by half term.

OngoingOmnishambles · 27/08/2020 15:13

Normally I’d agree with you but not this year. This year has been pants with people in my family having Covid, one dying and generally having a crap time whilst trying to maintain our sanity.

I’ll be milking birthdays, Halloween and Christmas for every bit of joy I can. 01 Sept I’ll start my Christmas shopping.!

InDeoEstMeaFiducia · 27/08/2020 15:14

YAY!

BarbaraofSeville · 27/08/2020 15:19

Morrisons had big bags of Quality Street etc by the entrance yesterday.

Not the big tubs, but a huge display of QS, Celebrations, Roses and the other one that I forget in big sharing bags - maybe they've done away with the tubs as part of a plastic reduction strategy.

Also, my Facebook memories came up with a post from a previous year about the August appearance of mince pies in the Co-op, so it seems that late August is the traditional start of the Christmas season, although it runs alongside Halloween and Bonfire night until taking over properly on 6th November.

I'm not sure I'm bothered, I don't even look at it all until December and who knows what Christmas will look like this year?

CMOTDibbler · 27/08/2020 15:28

I normally don't buy anything for christmas until mid December, but tbh I am fully up with moving towards christmas as soon as possible as me and 2020 are done - and I am thinking of getting chocs and christmas puds in early in case of lockdown again.

DinosApple · 27/08/2020 15:30

I completely get the looking forward to something on the horizon, but I'm fairly certain that my own Christmas is going to be nothing like usual. Its going to be an odd, SD Christmas, if we see family at all.

Normally there would be 10 of us and I love it. MIL died in May from Covid, DM, DF and DU are late 60s/70s, DB and his DP are shielding her mum. BIL will come to us though. I work in a school so really won't want to be indoors with any older relations who are able to be cautious- and they won't want me there either!

We normally go to church- that'll be online and no Christmas market in our town this year.

In fact I feel quite depressed thinking about it!

TSSDNCOP · 27/08/2020 15:33

YABU re the mince pies.

Funnily enough though I just saw runs of chocolates in the Co-op for 2 for £9 and thought "Ah Christmas already".

Ive often thought when I see those giant displays of building myself a house from them Grin

bearlyactive · 27/08/2020 15:34

I admit to have started my Christmas shopping... but only because it makes such a dent in my bank account, hopefully by spreading the cost the dent will be a bit lighter! And yes, I did organise a Secret Santa yesterday. For the same reason.

Aposterhasnoname · 27/08/2020 15:34

Normally I’d agree with you, but this year has been so unremittingly shit that I’m glad to have something to look forward to, and it cheers me up to see it all.

Sophiesdog2020 · 27/08/2020 16:20

Ha, my DS is currently working in a mixed retail store, after finishing uni this summer.

His shifts last week included Sunday evening, he knew it would be moving goods around in store, it was actually putting out Christmas stuff (Supposed to be Halloween too but they didn’t have enough stock arrive!). He has since been putting pet Christmas treats out.....

I told him it was much too early but it was an edict from head office it seems!

He has always loved Xmas decorations, we nicknamed him the Christmas sprite when younger, so reckon he is in his element dealing with Christmas goods in August!

Kaktus · 27/08/2020 17:02

It won’t be much different for us because we don’t have any extended family anyway. Sorry to hear about your MIL.

Tbf I think mince pies should be available all year round anyway. I've still got uncooked mince pies in my freezer from last Christmas!
