Filling snacks for school break time

Dds (13) break time has changed until later in the morning and she will apparently be starving between lessons 🙄 What are good, filling, veggie snacks that she could take? I think they get a 20 minute break. She doesn't like nuts unless they are in Nutella, doesn't like things like hummus, she will eat most fruits but doesn't find them filling. Maybe muesli and yogurt would be good? She will have either porridge or thick slices of homemade toast with Nutella for breakfast and a cup of tea. Lunch will be soup and a bread roll, or pasta, or sandwiches, with fruit and/or carrot sticks, cucumber and cherry tomatoes. She is ravenous at all times but is built like a gazelle and obviously burns everything quickly.
Please tell me your suggestions or tried and tested snack success stories.

Cubes of cheese with slices of cucumber/cherry tomatoes.

The cheese and cucumber is my go to snack for mid morning (I start work at 7 am and often don't get lunch until after 1 pm).

SionnachRua · 26/08/2020 19:09

Would she eat overnight oats? I think you're meant to eat that cold and it would be filling.

Popcorn might work too.

Bananas are more filling than other fruits or try different cereal bars. My ds liked taking those weetabix drinks, breakfast drinks like that might be good to fill her up alongside a snack.

Banana and peanut butter bread (if your not already sick of making banana bread throughout lockdown). It also freezes well, I make two loaves, let them cool, slice them and put individual portions in the freezer.

Cold sausages
Hard boiled eggs
1/2 a sandwich
Slice of quiche
Cubes of cheese with cucumber or pickled onions

Great ideas here!

They would like to take crisps every day but I'm trying to get them out of their crisp habit as they aren't filling or healthy. They are having packed lunches to start as despite getting fsm the dinner provision is dire, long queues, tiny portions and until everyone settles into the new system they will take packed lunches. Yay more work for me! They aren't big on cheese but dd2 loves Philadelphia and will happily have that with breadsticks. I could make flapjacks or oatmeal raisin or cranberry cookies. I'm going to have to be organised!

Malt loaf? Either those little snack packs or just buy a cheap loaf to slice

LadyEloise · 26/08/2020 19:33

In dcs schools there is a no nut policy as some children have severe nut allergy.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 26/08/2020 19:35

Popcorn

SistemaAddict · 26/08/2020 19:39

It was no nuts at primary but secondary doesn't have any restrictions except no fizzy drinks or hot drinks to be taken to school.

Quaker do porridge bars which my DD loves, they seem to be half price in a lot of supermarkets and say they contain as many oats as a bowl of porridge.

Other snacks:

  • boiled egg
  • cooked and cooled veg like baby corn, greenbeans, sugar snap peas, mange tout. In a Tupperware tub with a little dressing they can be eaten quick.
  • Greek yoghurt
  • cheesestring/babybel
LunaLoveFood · 26/08/2020 19:42

Overnight oats with raisins or bananas make a nice snack. I make it in a jam jar and take it to work to eat.

Lookingbackatme · 26/08/2020 19:43

Homemade blueberry muffin (or other fruit)

Greek yoghurt (proper stuff like Fage) with berries in a cold mini food flask

It sounds a bit like she needs more protein to fill her up at breakfast - maybe eggs or the Greek yogurt (again, the proper stuff as the imitations don’t have the same high protein)

Quiche slice

Flynn2019 · 26/08/2020 19:43

Mayb those soreen fruit loaf bars? Apple slices with peanut butter usually fills me up for a while too.

HeyMicky · 26/08/2020 19:44

A combination of fat and protein will be most filling. Would she make flapjacks that have extra nuts and seeds and dried fruit in them? Or muffins with veg and cheese. Mini quiches - make a stack in muffin tins and freeze. Any kind of protein dips, with breadsticks or veg or felafel. Cheese in various forms. Veggie proteins, even cold veggie nuggets and sausages. Small wrap with spread and fruit or veg.

missyB1 · 26/08/2020 19:46

Ds will take a cereal bar and either a banana or satsuma.

MrsGrindah · 26/08/2020 19:50

Laughing at homemade toast!

What about Nigellas breakfast muffins? You could fill them with a blob of Nutella so they go all melty in the middle?

BrutusMcDogface · 26/08/2020 19:52

Some kind of big breakfast muffin, full of oats and nuts and fruit?

I have 4 and they already eat like horses....but the oldest is only 10....aaagh!

BrutusMcDogface · 26/08/2020 19:52

Cross posted! Nutella muffin sounds 😋

viques · 26/08/2020 19:54

Doesn't sound as though she has much protein in either her breakfast or her lunch. I would consider doing a Spanish/German type breakfast , cheese, piece of frittata, sliced meat eg ham or chicken, hard boiled egg, it should keep her going for a bit longer. She shouldn't be relying so heavily on a snack to keep her until lunch, it should be a little pop of energy .

If she is hungry when she comes home from school (who isn't) again steer her towards protein or fat based snacks like full fat Greek yogurt, avocado.

Shedpaint · 26/08/2020 19:59

DD2 loves thick Greek yoghurt as a filling snack at home but keeping it cold an issue for school break
Protein is good for filling them up so she takes cheese and a few whole meal crackers usually.
DD1 won’t eat break
DS has a banana every single school day

SistemaAddict · 26/08/2020 20:04

@MrsGrindah sorry, it's homemade bread toasted so is nice and chunky and more filling than a bought sliced loaf and without any additives. I suppose homemade toast does sound daft GrinCripes, no doubt I'll be baking a loaf a day too when they go back 😩 house will smell nice though Smile

Breakfast muffins sound good. Dd2 has never been one to eat breakfast early whereas the rest of us need to eat as soon as we are up. She will happily eat breakfast about 11 if left to her own devices so a breakfast muffin would be good. I'll look it up.
