Please help me find a (definitely non Nestle, ideally Fairtrade and palm oil free) alternative to KitKats

I’m not willing to buy Nestle products, and DH understands why and entirely supports that, but misses KitKats (I couldn’t eat them even if I wanted to - bloody allergies). He doesn’t miss them enough to betray principles and buy them, but would really rather like an alternative.

I am not hugely concerned about price (happy to pay a suitable price for something ethically sound - or at least less ethically awful than Nestle, plus it’s a treat) but would welcome any recommendations please.

(And for a mega challenge - if anyone happens to know of a dairy free version - haha - I know - I am asking too much! - I would be unbelievably grateful if you would please please please share?!)

Asking in hope more than expectation, but thanks if you read this far.

Sainsbury’s own may help you.
A lot of their biscuits are sustainable palm oil.

Also Aldi’s own Nutella is sustainable palm oil and very much cheaper

EvilPea · 24/08/2020 20:58

Just seen your dairy free request.
Don’t think it will help with that one though.

Sorry

There are recipes for making kitkat type things at home

Almost nothing is palm oil free nowadays, it's absolutely shit.
Rich teas are (but not the finger-style version Confused)
Sainsbury's own Jaffa cakes are (been out of stock for last six months at our Sainsbury's!!)
Um that's about it.
All the GF/DF stuff has palm oil. I have to buy GF/DF for DD, and I have to waive the palm-oil-free pledge for her, because there's just nothing she can have for packed lunches otherwise.
Don't be fooled by "sustainable" palm oil- the certification isn't worth the paper it's written on, and still contributes to rainforest loss and habitat loss.

MakingMabel · 24/08/2020 21:20

Ombar chocolate in Waitrose. Bloody lovely and dairy free, fair trade, organic etc.

Whathappenedtothelego · 24/08/2020 21:31

They are not that similar to Kitkats, but Bahlsen choco Leibniz biscuits are palm oil free. Not dairy free though, I think they replaced their palm oil with butter!

haba · 24/08/2020 21:35

Omar is just chocolate though? Not wafer in chocolate?

SconesandCupcakes · 24/08/2020 21:35

Milka Leo but like most chocolate nowadays it contains palm oil.

W00t · 24/08/2020 21:53

There's a wafer variety of Ritter sport...but it's not DF, obviously. Palm oil free though

SuperFairy · 24/08/2020 22:04

Choco Leibniz biscuits are the work of the devils and the gods!

The gods made them so delicious, the devils made them so calorific!!

I’d eat a (packet of) Leibniz over a KitKat every day (hour) of the week!

Beamur · 24/08/2020 22:08

Have a look at vegan brands.
Not tried them myself but a quick Google comes up with Eskal as dairy free wafer biscuits, you'll have to look and see if palm oil free though

MarinaMarinara · 24/08/2020 22:19

Thanks so much all - dairy free is not critical (would just mean I could have them too), the rest is important to me. At the mo if I get a mega craving for chocolate I am eating essential trading organic chocolate hazelnut spread out the jar (so so yummy and dairy free and just awesome). Off to have a really good look at some of these lovely recommendations now Smile

Try these, they are new out I think and utterly irresistible

TiptopJ · 24/08/2020 22:32

Wow OP. I've just googled why people boycott nestle as I've seen it mention a few times on MN now. I can't help with your thread but I'll be boycotting them myself now so thank you for posting this

MarinaMarinara · 25/08/2020 06:51

Thanks @TiptopJ - I am not normally super reactive (I have ethics that I try to live by, like most people, but am quite moderate in most ways!) but Nestle just horrifies me on multiple levels and even though I know they won’t notice the modest amounts my household would spend on chocolate or coffee or whatever I am not prepared to give them any of our money.

@MakingMabel I just ordered a whole selection of Ombars Blush so excited for when they arrive!

I would like a wafer chocolate bar - but may try making one (once I have thoroughly explored the suggestions on this thread - for research purposes, obviously).

I have been lucky with dairy free chocolate that meets all of the things I want (of don’t want). My absolute favourite vegan chocolate is the Vego fruit and nut dark chocolate. So, so good! And vegan, organic, palm oil free and Fairtrade. Perfect!

For dairy free DS I get Play in Choc boxes - basically like a much classier Kinder egg - lovely little cardboard 3D puzzle, fact card, vegan (fair trade, palm oil free) chocolates, What’s not to love?!

You want wafer biscuits. Waitrose does them in the gluten free section. Comes in a traypacket. Devourable.

HungryPies · 25/08/2020 07:34

www.jessicasvegandelights.co.uk/ does vegan alternatives of kitkats, snickers etc. She's on instagram and also facebook I think.

haba · 25/08/2020 08:57

The Nomo chocolate is nice too, I think it's been DD's favourite of all the ones she's tried (it started with an Easter egg!). Tbh, she prefers dark chocolate, which is pretty easy to get DF.
I'm going to look for gf wafer biscuits in Waitrose next time I'm there.

aToadOnTheWhole · 25/08/2020 09:04

We've been long term boycotters of Nestle. They are utter bastards.

There used to be tradecraft fair break chocolate wafer biscuits but they seem to be out of stock everywhere. They're not exactly like KitKats but we're similar enough and faitrade.

I've had a bit of success with Aldi. Most of their chocolate seems to be palm free and a lot of it is also fair trade. I know they have a KitKat dupe so might be worth trying there.

MarinaMarinara · 25/08/2020 21:59

While wasn’t my aim I am really pleased to have found others who think Nestle are pretty evil. And recommendations for lovely more ethical chocolate. So thank you all!

aToadOnTheWhole · 26/08/2020 11:44

Divine chocolate is also absolutely amazing. You know, just for chocolate having. It's ethical, fair trade and the only fair trade chocolate company co-owned by the actual cocoa farmers.

aToadOnTheWhole · 26/08/2020 11:47

Divine do a whole vegan range too.

ItWorriesMeThisKindofThing · 26/08/2020 11:48

The Sainsburys dark chocolate version is lovely but I don’t know it’s palm oil status

ClosestThingToCrazy · 26/08/2020 12:08

Elite's kif kefs are a good substitute. They may have palm oil in, though. But they are good. You can find them in kosher supermarkets and in the kosher sections of some bigger supermarkets. They're not dairy free, but I've definitely seen some pareve ones before (no meat or dairy products in them) in kosher shops. I just can't remember what brands they were
