Orphaned mouse- advice please!

DH was clearing earth on the garden and accidentally disturbed a mouse nest. Only one baby mouse survived😥

It's currently in a box beside me, squeaking having spend the first 20 mins in DH hand.

It's got fur and ears but eyes still closed so we think less than 2 weeks old??

We've got a mini-hot water bottle in its box, a towel and some torn up kitchen paper that he has snuggled into.

DH fed him with some warmed milk in a teeny bottle belonging to some rubbishy toy or other of the DC! I see online puppy milk replacement is best but we've nothing like that and all shops closed of course.

Has anyone any advice? I'm seeing online info that they need feeding 1.5-2 hourly but don't know how long that needs to happen for, or when to give him other foods, if he even survives😔

We're willing to do our best for him. If he survives the night I'll go to local pet store for advice.

Any pearls of wisdom would be much appreciated. He's awfully small and adorable.

No more advice to add. It sounds like you’re doing an amazing job. To be honest, I only clicked on your thread because of the title. I knew it’d be about a cutesy wutesy iccle baby mouse.

Can we please can we have a pic. He must be off the scale adorable.

RedLimoncello · 23/08/2020 22:24

He is super cute.

I had pet mice as a kid. They are sooo cute when small but I’ve never seen one that wee! I hope he survives and you get advice from a sanctuary to help him.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 24/08/2020 00:35

Oh my ❤️ has just liquidated.

That level of cuteness should be illegal.

My cute aggression levels are going absolute wild. Even the bottle you’re feeding him with is adorable. It’s it one of those dolls bottles.
Gggggrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Squeeeeeeeeeeee.

igot20joe · 24/08/2020 01:53

Checking in 🥰 how is s/he doing?

Puddlelane123 · 24/08/2020 05:10

Adorable and so kind of you to try to keep the wee thing alive. Could be wrong but I know with other baby mammals the mother has to stimulate their toileting by gently wiping / stroking their nether regions after feeds? Might be worth a google if you haven’t already researched this.

@Awwlookatmybabyspider
'Cute aggression levels' ! Love it!
Well done op. Good luck with the little mouse.

RedLimoncello · 24/08/2020 07:20

Puddlelane you're right and we've done that too. DH did the night feed and "nappy change". Going to seek out some input from a small mammal rescue person today.

We need a live "MouseCam".

UnitedRoad · 24/08/2020 08:37

@RedLimoncello I love you. I say this as someone who has been mothering a fledgling pigeon that the cat caught for the last week. Yesterday he flew out of the garden for the first time, after 5 days of just hopping around like a penguin. I was so proud of him (and now really miss him)

Good luck with your mouse.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 24/08/2020 18:56

How is doing. Have you given him a name

Puddlelane123 · 24/08/2020 19:15

I lost a whole hour earlier on the facebook page of the rodent nurse mentioned upthread. What an incredible lady! And so passionate and informative in her writing. So much cuteness on her page..

RedLimoncello · 24/08/2020 19:38

She's great! My DBro actually seems to know a fair bit about mice and he says she's a girl.

We've gotten some advice on looking after her and have formula we're weaning her on to. She's even pooped on her own! She was very perky at this evening's feed wanting to wander around a bit even with the eyes still closed! She snuggled back down into DH's hand after her milk.

The DC have met her and are in love. She's adorable😍 Were still planning on releasing her back into the wild once she's old enough and DC know that but damn it'll be hard!

Lovely wee thing! I rescued a shrew from my cat last week, it was cute, but nowhere near this cute!

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 24/08/2020 20:08

Oh my goodness how adorable!

Talk to the small mammal expert you're contacting about this. It may be that having hand reared her, the kindest thing will be to keep her as a pet, as her odds of survival may be quite low. (It's not as if mice are an endangered species that you must reintroduce into the wild.)
