What can I do with all my plums??

Two plum trees in the garden this year and they are absolutely laden! We've had branches break off with the weight of fruit.

No one in the family is that bothered about stewed plums or plum jam/chutney. We will have a few puddings, but I need some new ideas!

I looked at plum wine, but it looks far too complicated and seems to involve a lot of equipment 🙄 any suggestions?? I will give plum vodka or gin a try I think, but need some more ideas.

Thanks!!

Blend some up and add to natural yoghurt for desert.

Anordinarymum · 23/08/2020 20:40

I made plum gin once. It was OK ..not half as good as Sloe Gin mind you

Brandaris · 23/08/2020 20:41

Rather than jam could you bottle a plum syrup/cordial? Would be delicious on ice cream or yogurt or mixed with lemonade and spirits.

Chop up and freeze crumble sized portions?

Plum lemonade? (Make a plum syrup and then add fizzy water)

Ooh these are good thank you. Plum cordial hadn't crossed my mind but that sounds yum. Yogurt would be a good call as well - and easy!

I did Victoria plum gin once, and contrary to the above poster, we found it delicious!!! Very simple- just gin, sugar and I think I halved the plums to check for worms and let it all steep till Christmas. The plums were lovely on ice cream and the gin was a lovely tipple! I used to check it monthly and add sugar if needed.

Would anyone make plum cheese? Similar to quince paste and goes well on a cheese platter.

Pie or crumble. Make several and freeze

Plum strudel made with puff pastry

Plum cake (can also be frozen)

Plum ice cream or gelato

BBQ sauce

Spicy plum ketchup is delicious! Like a really good brown sauce.

Somewone left some rhubarb for passers by to take from their frount gate once. I took enough for a pie. I was delighted.

Plum and Almond Hooch (you need to like almonds for this, if you do it’s very yummy)
500g ripe plums
200g granulated sugar
35g blanched almonds
200ml rum

Prick the plums all over and put in a Kilner jar with the almonds and sugar. Pour over the rum, seal, shake every few days til the sugar is dissolved then store in a cool, dark place for 6 months.

I also have a glut so have have made large quantities.

This is from Diana Henry’s Salt, Sugar, Smoke. She has a number of other recipes for plums so might be worth buying. Only £6.24 on Amazon at the moment.

Bellybellybelly · 23/08/2020 21:09

Plumb wine is easy and you only need a few items all of which are avaibel at Wilkos.
2 or 3 x demijones
Air locks for each demijohn
1 x Fermenting bucket
1 siphon tube
10 / 15 empty wine / spirt bottles
Muslin to filter

1 x tub Sterilizing granules
1 pack of yeast per gallon of wine
And depending on how sweet / sharp your plumb are about a quarter of sugar to plums by weight ( or a bit more )

Steralize everything thoroughly
Cut the plums in half or bash them up a bit so it's great for useing over ripe bruised fruit .
Cover the fruit in cold water and bring to the boil for about 20 mins strain off the juice thtogh the muslin into the fermenting bucket , cover the fruit in cold water again and repeat 2 more times . Discard the fruit, add the sugar to the juice stir till desolved.

Allow to cool completely, add the yeast . Don't stir
Leave in a warm place for a week releasing the lid every day to allow the gas to escape

Decant into demijones add air locks and leave for around 3 months , don't move them it's important to allow the sediment to settle.
After three months siphon the wine carfuly so as not to get any sedament out into the fementing bucket decant again .
Wash out the demijones and pour the wine back into them , leave for another month,

Siphon into bottles , drink when ready but gen the longer you can leave it the better.

Post it on local FB etc? My DMum gets endless (these days often unsolicited) deliveries from the neighbours and makes quantities of jams etc for redistribution. (Neighbours then leave her empty jars and the cycle continues!).

stoneysongs · 23/08/2020 21:57

Plum vodka

And this cake is delicious

Nigella's Chinese plum sauce is really amazing. I've tried to google but can't find it online. It's in her book How to be a Domestic Goddess. I used to make it every year when I had a plum tree in the garden. I used it a lot as a stir fry sauce or put it in casseroles to add extra richness.

MissBPotter · 23/08/2020 22:05

I’m the same op. They were lovely to eat raw (mine nearly all gone now after recent high winds) and I also made:
Jam
Crumbles
Poached some and had with yoghurt for breakfast
Vodka
Gin

The latter two are basically experiments and may be horrible but hopefully not!
Otherwise can you give to neighbours or bring in to work?

Sceptre86 · 23/08/2020 22:05

Plum crumble is delicious or maybe you could try jam?

Bellybellybelly · 23/08/2020 22:13

Thanks for these suggestions. The plum and ginger cakes looks scrummy.

We live very rural, so no passing folk to take them from a help yourself box, and i work in a council building where food sharing is currently STRICTLY forbidden due to Covid. I will say to friends and family to pop by and fill their boots though 😁

I don't know what's happened this year with plums I've never seen so many on my tree and I pick them and more appear 🙈 so far I've left 4 boxes out the front of the drive for people to take ( all gone within the day) and stewed some with sugar and frozen it to make a crumble and then as we have two apples trees also laden but not quite ready I've done a apple and plum stew and again frozen it for winter to make a crumble. Family and friends have picked loads too!! I'm going to google that nigella sauce

Elouera · 23/08/2020 22:27

I'd gladly take a bag. MIL's Victoria plum must have a bug or getting old, as it only had 10 plums this year- depsite previous bumper crops.

Her damsons were looking great, but when I returned after the heat wave, they had turned into prunes!!! Literally, all shrivelled on the tree like a large raisin!!! Angry
