What good true crime or drama podcasts have I missed?

I’ve got a shitload of cleaning to do today and need something absorbing to listen to while I get it done.

I think I’ve listened to the whole of BBC Sounds and many, many true crime and fiction podcasts on other platforms.

I like well researched, journalistic re-tellings or re-investigations - recommend me your favourites please Smile.

S-Town was the pinnacle of podcasts! I think that’s why I’ve found some true crime podcasts to be a bit naff, given the high production values on that one.

The original Serial is also worth a listen. The second and third are quite different but still interesting, and the fourth is different again (just started that one).

Kindlingwood · 23/08/2020 11:34

I listen to casefile. It’s good as it has some ,ess we’ll know cases.

I also, like the serial killer podcast. The host is Norwegian and takes a bit of getting used to his presenting style/accent but it is very good.

I also listen to ‘serial killers’ which is interesting, although not my favourite.

Red handed is good too, although it is very chatty waffle. Some interesting cases although some are a bit hit and miss. It was my favourite one, but not been quite as good in recent months.

Red Handed - presented by 2 women, sensitively done, very well researched and presented with some interesting and less well known cases discussed.

Another vote for Red Handed, it's brilliant! And S-Town was an incredible series, definitely give that one a listen.

@Standstilling my one complaint about MFM is that as the podcast got increasingly popular, I found the presenters a bit self-indulgent with the off-topic chit chat at the start and the podcasts got looooong. Sometimes it would be 40 minutes before they even started talking about crime.

I've been listening to some of the more recent ones though and they seem to have reigned it in a lot.

I saw them live last year too!

Standstilling · 23/08/2020 19:53

I can hear that starting to happen now Blustery, and there are a lot of ads but that’s true of a lot of podcasts.

Live?! You are a true fan Grin

Also, West Cork, which was previously available on Audible. Not sure where it can be found now but it’s also excellent

Spotted the chief suspect a few weeks ago when on hols with family. Strange experience. The podcast has definitely upped his notoriety.

EmmaStone · 23/08/2020 20:08

Most of my recs have been mentioned, but I also really 'enjoyed' the Daniel Morgan story, recently made into a TV series too. Horrifying story.

If you liked S Town, do you ever listen to This American Life? Not true crime, but same team. Also for a bit of light relief, Louis Theroux's Grounded has been good, and I can never get enough of Adam Buxton, particularly when he's got Joe Cornish and/or Louis as his guests.

In Schull? I did wonder if that would be a side effect of the success of the podcast. Jealous you made it to West Cork this year, our trip got Covided!

He was shopping in a nearby big town

hollyandkit · 23/08/2020 20:48

Thanks for the Casefile recommendations Lokicat - the Sherri Rasmussen one was so weird! Just listening to the Jonestown one now (three parter) completely compelling and I hadn't heard of it before - it's about an American cult in the 70s

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 23/08/2020 20:51

@hollyandkit there’s a fantastic BBC4 documentary about Jonestown that is really worth a watch

Thanks, I'll check that out

Bear Brook Murders

LokiCat · 23/08/2020 22:28

@hollyandkit no worries, glad you enjoyed! Another one of my favourites is Daniel Morecombe (54) - bit of a slower starter but gets really good. Also the East Area Rapist episodes (5 parts plus recent updates) are on a lot of people's top lists but I haven't managed to get through them yet!
Thanks for the rec. I'd watched a documentary on Jonestown previously so gave the episodes a miss, but will check them out 😊

hollyandkit · 24/08/2020 09:41

Just wish I'd discovered Casefile at the beginning of lockdown and not now I'm back to work! Thanks again Lokicat & Gingerandthebiscuits

hollyandkit · 24/08/2020 10:20

& thanks for starting this thread Standstilling, so much to listen to now!

RozHuntleysStump · 24/08/2020 10:35

I listen to loads of this stuff. Defiantly West Cork is up there at the top.

You can get good recommendations from Crime Writers On.. who review a lot of true crime media and pop culture stuff.

RozHuntleysStump · 24/08/2020 10:36

Definitely not defiantly. God

Unfortunately I think RedHanded is getting a bit like this - I do really like it and still enjoy listening to the podcast but one of the two presenters in particular keeps trying to push her personal politics and is becoming a big preachy I think. Also can be quite sneery about what they deem to be "posh" despite the fact to my north east war they. Both sound quite posh themselves! Not that it matters but the fact they make it a po

HKW81 · 25/08/2020 10:11

Oops pressed post too early. Meant to say the fact they make it a point is quite unnecessary and grating. It's still a good podcast and they do a good job of discussing crimes but yet pushing of personal opinions is getting a bit much for me 😊

They Walk Among Us is really good - it's a total no frills podcast with just one lad doing the show. All based on fact on fact and very informative and he's done a wide variety of cases

HKW81 · 25/08/2020 10:12

Aah sorry about my typos!! North east ear not north east war 😂
