With no school clubs, what's your plan for wraparound care if you work?

I'm starting stress out that most likely I'll have drop at least 5 hours of work. Children are not be dropped at the same time and we have to follow very odd routes to do so.

I know everybody is trying their best but I don't think the current plans will make it easy for working parents.

We have no plan right now which is making me uneasy to say the least. I have no idea what we’ll do.

BigPlanes · 22/08/2020 08:12

In Scotland - after school clubs opened within days of schools opening.

daisybrown37 · 22/08/2020 08:14

My husband is having to do all the drop offs and 3 pick ups, he will take his lunch break and then go back to work (working from home)

I work in a school (office not teacher), I will have to finish early 2 days and do pick up and log back on when I get home. I am in my probation for a new role, so not great at all.

Working parents seem to have got a raw deal. I’m having grandparents pick up as I can’t change my hours and DH works away.

daisybrown37 · 22/08/2020 08:16

Alternative is 70 plus MIL and she is still acting as shielded and would have to get a bus, so not really an alternative at the moment.

wendz86 · 22/08/2020 08:16

The after school club is opening at my children’s school . My childminder is also working .

SweepTheHalls · 22/08/2020 08:16

Employed our babysitter who is due to go to Uni at the end of the month to cover us until the end of September when I'm praying wrap around will have re opened.

Fatted · 22/08/2020 08:17

We've always used a CM and will continue to do so. However, we haven't been told anything by the school about staggering start/end times. It is a small school though. I am also going to be WFH permanently now, so if there are any problems I do have that flexibility.

Dotinthecity · 22/08/2020 08:18

Our school after-school and breakfast clubs will be running as has our holiday club. Are you sure your school isn’t planning to run them?

BillywigSting · 22/08/2020 08:19

I also have no idea how we're going to manage.

I work 12 hour shifts and dp is 9-5. Wrap around meant that I could work two week days and one weekend day, and dp could do drop off and pick ups.

We have very little help from grandparents (there are only three, and they all also work full time). I have no siblings and dp's sister lives at the other end of the country.

There are two child minders in our area and neither of them drop off or collect to our dc's school (and even if they did they are both fully booked anyway). He's only 6 so can't be left at all.

It's giving me some very sleepless nights and looking like I'm going to have to drop to two shifts and work every weekend, I'd loose a third of my pay and a significant amount of work life balance.

Lucked · 22/08/2020 08:20

I am in Scotland, the school hasn’t restarted clubs but private companies are back open

purplemunkey · 22/08/2020 08:20

Our wraparound care is open from Sept too. As are childminders.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 22/08/2020 08:23

Wrap around club is open at my school. I start early and finish at 2.30 so DS only goes to breakfast club then I'm there to pick him up after school.

I'm more concerned about school closures as I cannot WFH.

Easylikesunday · 22/08/2020 08:25

It's the same for me @BillywigSting if w don't want the drop in income I'll have to work weekends. There are wrist things in life but I'd also be working every day of the week

I’ve given up job hunting because I can’t see how it will work. DH works 8-6 with an hour commute each way & no flexibility. I have two kids in primary, one child starts school at 8.40, the other at 9. One ends at 14.40, the other at 3. Before and after school club aren’t opening. I know I’m lucky to be at home to deal with this but I really bloody wanted a job.

YouJustDoYou · 22/08/2020 08:30

I'm already going to have to turn down almost all my normal work hours because the schools my kids go to have odd but precise drop off and pick up times, as well as convoluted routes in and out of the school grounds, so I'm screwed already. And there's no clubs.

Littlebelina · 22/08/2020 08:32

Our school is planning on opening wraparound, only difference is you need to book in advance (before they offered on the day). The holiday club ds goes to runs wraparound for different schools and they are planning on opening as well. The guidance allows to open but they need to try to bubble kids in groups.

SimonJT · 22/08/2020 08:32

We’re very lucky that it will be managable for us.

My boyfriend is recovering from surgery so when he is back in the UK he will do drop and off and pick up. He is due to return to work on the 15th, so after that he will do drop off and pick up every Monday.

I’ll be working from home so I’m going to start work early each morning then log off for drop off, I’ll then work through my lunch (I can easily eat and work) so I can log off early for pick up. I don’t work Fridays so thats easy. Luckily I do four short days so it isn’t too bad.

NothingIsWrong · 22/08/2020 08:34

Wraparound opening here but you have to stick to fixed days, before it was flexible. I've booked more than I really need to make sure I do have a bit of flexibility but am aware this isn't financially an option for most people.

Aragog · 22/08/2020 08:34

It's really tricky.
We are reopening our breakfast club but with smaller numbers.
The after school, club which took place in our school hall isn't reopening though, or not in our hall anyway. It's actually a separate private company. I think they are reopening, or have already done so maybe, but with alternative premises.
A few of the local childcare options seem to be reopening, albeit with reduced numbers.

BoogleMcGroogle · 22/08/2020 08:36

Our after school club hoped to be open, but received further guidance yesterday which made it impossible.

We are going to be doing lots of shuffling around and catching up in the evening and at weekends. I'm considering seeing if I can find an au pair ( I'm sure they are beating the UK's door down at the moment 🙄) but that's a very big commitment for the sake of childcare. Not least, because they'd need a car.

BonfireStarter · 22/08/2020 08:38

I'm in England, all the schools in my area are doing breakfast and after school club.

Letseatgrandma · 22/08/2020 08:41

What was in the guidance that made it impossible, do you know?

Our breakfast/after school club won’t be reopening for some time, due to a lack of staffing.

BillywigSting · 22/08/2020 08:49

What's really annoying me is that some schools in England seem to be opening wrap around while others are not, seems to be a post code lottery.

At the moment, I'm going to be working 24 hours a week, all on Saturdays and Sundays and will still be loosing a third of my income (at least, I often pick up overtime which I won't be able to now).

I'm also still on probation as it's a fairly new job.

I feel utterly shafted.

Rowanberries · 22/08/2020 09:04

Only the youngest is still at primary. After school is open but with limited spaces. Given that we can wfh with relatively flexible jobs and are 2 mins from school so he can walk home if necessary we've decided to give up his place so people who really need it can have it.
