Words that rhyme in your accent

Just said to DS

Count down from 10
Then count back up again

Which rhymed. Then I said it again and it didn't. Which made me think about the nightmare of writing rhyming books for children and the whole giraffe/scarf thing which defiantly doesn't work in my accent.

Also ftr I'm team:
My scone
Is alone
He likes to moan
But it lets his hone
His sculpting of bone.

God I hate teaching my kid phonics
Roll on September

We had a lovely book (Bedtime Bear) which had

"an owl.... in a towel"

I couldn't read it. Had to get H to do that one.

merryhouse · 18/08/2020 11:42

Also, tongues rhymes with songs (I blame Isaac Watts)

Finger and singer rhyme in my accent. I only found out this wasn't normal when trying to learn a new language, then I had to survey every other English speaker I knew!

HereWeStand · 18/08/2020 12:31

Wait a minute... finger and singer aren’t supposed to rhyme??

BearSoFair · 18/08/2020 12:33

Ten and again definitely rhyme to me.
Owl and towel too.

Bath and scarf but I know full well that's just bad English Blush

DotForShort · 18/08/2020 12:39

Mary, merry, and marry sound exactly the same in my accent, and they rhyme with berry, carry, fairy, etc.

aShinyNewUsername · 18/08/2020 12:55

@HereWeStand they do if you’re from Yorkshire or Lancashire

TokyoSushi · 18/08/2020 12:57

Garage and marriage here!

iklboo · 18/08/2020 13:04

Owl / towel
Finger / singer
Ten / again
Tongue / song
Scone / bone
Garage / marriage
Merry / berry
Look / luck

Giraffe & scarf don't rhyme. It's the 'short' a in my accent for bath, castle etc. Definitely non-rhotic.

MynameisMary · 18/08/2020 13:06

Mary doesn't rhyme with those words @DotForShort (well, except fairy)

It's most annoying when people don't pronounce my name the way it's supposed to be said - I introduce myself and people mangle the pronunciation until it's a different name altogether!

doadeer · 18/08/2020 13:09

I have a book which rhymes scarves with laughs.

Well this absolutely does not rhyme for me. I say laffs

janaus50s · 18/08/2020 13:11

I have this word, that grates if it’s not pronounced the way I say it, the way I think it is pronounced.
Can I ask opinions here please.
The word is - Battery, car battery, etc.
The way I say it, sounds like Battry.
But I hear others say it, sound like they are dragging the word out -
Bat - ter- ree.
Sorry, a bit off topic.

Garage and marriage rhyme for me. And giraffe and scarf. Scone and gone.

CarlottaValdez · 18/08/2020 13:17

In my accent finger has a hard g in the middle and singer doesn’t so they don’t rhyme for me.

I'm from Yorkshire.
Tongue = dung
Scone = gone
Bath = path = laugh = giraffe
Towel = owl
Again = ten

Finger ≠ singer though because I don't stress the "g" in singer

Thneedville · 18/08/2020 13:22

I always thought phonics must be much easier for northern kids compared to southern:
B-a-t-h for example does not sound out bath in southern-ish

Thneedville · 18/08/2020 13:23

Most rhymes I can hear how they rhyme on other accents- except tongue and song??

DotForShort · 18/08/2020 13:24

@MynameisMary

Mary doesn't rhyme with those words *@DotForShort* (well, except fairy)

It does in my accent.
CarlottaValdez · 18/08/2020 13:24

Tongue is pronounced same as tong in some accents. Tong and song rhyme for me.

LovelyWeekAway · 18/08/2020 13:25

Carl
And
Barrel

( the Scottish pronunciation of the mans name Carl sounds like Carol Grin)
All those rolling R’s

SleepingStandingUp · 18/08/2020 13:27

Still need someone to do the phonics on singer and finger.

Sin huh
Fin guh

They rhyme 😂😂
