What do people DO on UK holidays?

We’re sun worshipers, and go abroad for the sun 2-3 times a year. Except this year!
We have a few days off in September, Thurs-Sun, and wouldn’t mind getting away for at least a couple of nights.

I’ve been looking at nice hotels in various UK locations (ie NOT Premier Inn type places) We aren’t super active people who are into bracing walks in the countryside (both have issues with arthritis 🙄), and if we stay in Scotland, any spas, pools etc are no go.

If you were us, where would you go and would you do?
Budget is fairly healthy, and travel by plane or car isn’t an issue

The OP states that she wants a luxury hotel and some posters suggest camping!
Given that the weather is shit now I can't think of anything worse. Why go on holiday to be less comfortable than you are at home. And putting up a tent then taking it down at the end of the holiday isn't very relaxing.

I think DrCoconut has nailed it.

annawithabanner · 19/08/2020 07:35

We had a few days in the Lakes / fabulous hotel with a spa / swimming pool / treatments etc Fabulous food / some nice walks if your into it / lots of places of interest.

If money isn't a major issue, how about the Kent coast? We live on the Romney Marsh coast, and tend to have an eco climate. It hardly ever rains and is very warm though often breezy, not perhaps the most beautiful views but there are places of culture to visit in the area and (mostly)empty beaches.

I'm 50 and arthritic and do like walking around, looking at things. The thought of deliberately going somewhere hot is not an appealing one to me. I'm fair skinned, prone to heat rashes and overheat very easily.

Tompbabs1 · 19/08/2020 09:02

Like you not overly active due to health problems, last month we hired a boat on the Norfolk broads, delightful pottering along the waterways seeing the wildlife and pub lunches/dinners.

JudgeRindersMinder · 19/08/2020 12:49

I’ve actually booked a very posh room at a lovely hotel here in Scotland which has loads of activities, and a great reputation for its food. I can’t name it here as it’s totally outing!!

The weather has been vile for most of this summer. Same as last. Cold and wet or windy most of the time.

Not where I live it hasn't.

eggandonion · 19/08/2020 14:09

Yes, tell us later, have a lovely time!

You’re very lucky then!! Scotland’s always a good few degrees cooler than England, from about the Midlands south!!

Perhaps you should decide what you are interested in and go from there.

If it is only lying on a beach worshipping the sun then you aren't going to enjoy a UK holiday in September.

Ferret27 · 19/08/2020 16:58

Drive around Scottish coast line and through the highlands .... it’s king any time of year ...did it once no booking ahead just found places to stay in the spots we discovered.... rent a log cabin with see or lake views.. read a book watch otters ... In fact most of our UK coastline is fabulous and you can sit and read in remote spots with a picnic .... honestly you should try it ...

eggandonion · 19/08/2020 17:10

I've added Romney to Dhs list of places we must go.
We stayed in Luton overnight in a budget hotel, woke up and opened the curtains, there was a security fence and all the planes behind it. That was amazing!

MintyCedric · 19/08/2020 17:16

we went to West Yorkshire a few years ago, the heart of Bronte Country. In a week we did

The Parsonage Museum
The National Media Museum
Day trip to York and Chocolate Museum
Old Salts Mill - David Hockney gallery/shop
Shopping to trip to Meadowhall in Sheffield
Sunday lunch on a canal boat from Hebden Bridge
Tea at Bettys in Harrogate
Drive through the Dale's to visit Wensleydale Creamery

There is so much to do there, and it's absolutely beautiful, much less traffic than down south. I've been trying to get back for the last three years but life keeps getting in the way.

It's been boiling down here until the last few days when we've had rain at last but it's still warm. It was the same last year.
Ginfordinner · 20/08/2020 07:25

But we don't all live in the south of England.

I hate the assumption on MN that most of us do Hmm

I'm in Yorkshire, and July was pretty miserable, and August has alternated between warm days, the odd hot day and torrential rain.

FreekStar · 20/08/2020 07:57

@MintyCedric and @WinnerwinnerGinfordinner

Yorkshire is the most amazing county and I'm glad people are recognising that these days.

I live in West Yorkshire too. The weather hasn't been all that bad- yes we have had the odd the rainy day and one or two torrential thunderstorms, but it's been short-lived with lots of sunny warm days in between. To expect the weather to be consistently dry and warm anywhere in the Uk is being unrealistic. You will only be disappointed. Expect it to be cool most days, expect some rain, plan your activities accordingly and when it's nice then it's a big bonus.

Ginfordinner · 20/08/2020 08:06

Most of July was quite chilly where I am. I'm on the edge of the Pennines, so it is always a few degrees cooler than Sheffield.

We haven't had the consistently amazing weather that they have had further south though.

MrTumblesSpottyHag · 20/08/2020 08:59

Pre children we'd go walking.
Now with the kids we go... walking. 😁
Interspersed with beach days/wild swimming/animal parks/sitting around outside the tent playing uno.
Thinking about it I'm not actually sure how we use up all our time but it certainly seems to fly by!

2020notQuiteAsPlanned · 20/08/2020 09:33

OP - given where you are based, why not pop over to gleneagles for a few days R&R? Always good! Limited spa and no pool at the moment I think - but always lovely!

BikeRunSki · 20/08/2020 11:33

@Bbq1

I'd recommend Liverpool. Lots of things to do and places to go. Great history, culture.I am a Scouser who lives here so I'm baised but it's a wonderful, vibrant city.
We spent a weekend in Liverpool en route to Northern Ireland Easter last year. The weather was Californian and the city was buzzing. So much more we want to go back and see.
Ginfordinner · 20/08/2020 11:50

Liverpool is on my bucket list

MintyCedric · 21/08/2020 13:26

@FreekStar

I'd wanted to visit for years but XH was having none of it as 'it's not a holiday destination'.

First thing I did after filing for divorce was book a holiday cottage 3 miles from Haworth and I absolutely fell in love with the place.

Had DD not settled so well into secondary school by the time the divorce was finalised I'd have moved up that way in a heartbeat.

Now considering it as a retirement option when the time comes!

I don't assume everybody lives in the South and know from speaking to family in Yorkshire that it hasn't been as good up there.. I was responding to a poster who stated the weather had been vile, without specifying where in the UK they were, as if the weather had been the same everywhere.
