Help! Hamster shredded precious blanket

Oh god, DD2 11 (severe anxiety) accidentally left absolute favourite blanket too close to hammie cage, and hammie somehow got hold of a fold and has irreparably shredded the middle of it. It was pretty much pristine (washes incredibly well) and I'm currently hiding it in the hope I can track one down as I used to see other people with them.
I'm stalking eBay obvs but posting on the off chance anyone is thinking of moving theirs on 😔

Sorry I can’t help but I have a niece who has a favourite blanket so fully empathise with you, I hope your DD will be ok when she finds out x

Mij · 16/08/2020 15:47

Should have also said it's from Mamas and Papas originally.

Start a new thread with the brand, date, range and description in. Someone might have one but you have far mor chance of someone reading it in the thread title than them actually opening the thread.

Have you a photo of the actual damage? Could it be patched? Not secretly but so she’s accept it.

Interested in this thread?

When I was a child my hamster chewed a big hole in my pyjamas, I'd left them near the cage which was in my bedroom. My daughter had several pages of a book she was reading shredded, pages she hadn't yet read. Hamsters will use anything to make themselves a cosy nest.

I've no help to offer about the blanket, sorry.

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 16/08/2020 15:55

I think you should tell your DD

Shes 11, and it was as a result of her actions. She might not want a replacement as it wouldnt be 'her blanket', she might prefer it repaired, or patched over or something. I know I would never have wanted a replacement of my favourite soft toy

AuntyPasta · 16/08/2020 16:01

She’s 11. Tell her what happened and offer her the choice of having it mended (patched) so it won’t fray, cutting it down and hemming it so it’s a smaller but perfect version, or making it into a cushion cover so she can have it on her bed. Dealing with things like this and realising it’s not the end of the world is a really important lesson particularly for children with anxiety.

Einszwei · 16/08/2020 16:02

Oh OP I sympathise with the situation! My autistic sons favourite white blanket accidentally got put in with a red sock in the wash. Tried bleaching etc to no avail so ended with a very pink blanket. Whilst he was devestated at first, he accepted the fact and still carries it around everywhere.

I would tell your daughter and talk her through the options ie.trying to source a new one or patching the old etc

picklemewalnuts · 16/08/2020 16:04

I think you should tell her, but don't frame it as a disaster or as a warning not to be careless with her stuff.

Something like 'guess what happened today, your hamster loves you special blanket too, and she's had a bit off a chew on it! I know it's a bit naughty, but that's what hamsters do. Try not to be cross about it. It's even more special now- unique- no one else will have a blanket quite as special as yours! I've had a look and if you want to we can fix it like this, or patch it like that. It will always be an extra special blanket though."

RobinRose · 16/08/2020 16:18

I like pp suggestion! Perhaps you could get a photo of the hamster printed on some fabric and use that as a patch cover up?

backseatcookers · 16/08/2020 16:21

Agree with others that you should establish a tone for this that isn't too grave - oh dear, silly hammy liked your blanket so much he has nibbled its! Shall we make something new out of the bits be hasn't nibbled so you can keep it somewhere safe and away from naughty hamster? She may well be very upset but being light hearted about it is worth a go in case it can help avoid that. Poor you, it's so sad knowing they are likely to be upset about something.

I was about to type exactly that.

Guys, while I'm sure you all mean well i don't need advice about how to deal with this. Where did I say I'm not going to tell her? DD1 is 14 and autistic so I have a LOT of experience timing, managing semantics etc of bad news. There is a LOT you don't know about the situation and I don't wish to share - anxiety is a very simplified term.

I'd just like to know my options before we talk about it. We've had disaster after disaster during lockdown (yes including death, of her first hamster and people we know) so please, perhaps just restrict replies to those who may know of the whereabouts of this blanket.

And yes of course I've thought of cushion covers (you can't wrap yourself in one), teddies (ditto) etc etc.

Like I said, I'm sure it's all well intentioned but seriously, I'm not after parenting advice here.

I have no advice on the blanket, but you’ve changed name mid thread and that might mean people miss your second and third posts (including the blanket brand) if they scan through for OPs posts, as they aren’t highlighted.

Just thought I’d mention it incase you want to ask MNHQ to name change those posts, or post again under the original name.

Good luck finding the blanket!

june2007 · 16/08/2020 16:39

Why two accounts?? And TBH people here are trying to help. I would look on Ebay or google Mamas and papas baby blankets.

HeronLanyon · 16/08/2020 16:42

Blimey op name change and being snotty to those who tried to help ! Just blimey.
Good luck.

SoupDragon · 16/08/2020 16:45

Gosh. So sorry for trying to help.

Sheesh.

backseatcookers · 16/08/2020 16:47

Bloody hell, what an unnecessarily snarky response to genuinely kind posts from people. Unreal!

SoupDragon · 16/08/2020 16:48

Where did I say I'm not going to tell her?

Right there in your OP where you said you had hidden the blanket whilst you try to track down a replacement.

Bingo.
picklemewalnuts · 16/08/2020 16:50

Ah, to be fair op, that wasn't the impression the first post gave. It was a 'what do I do' post, not a 'where do I replace this' post.

I'll bow out, as it's not my skill set.

GoshHashana · 16/08/2020 16:53

It's a lesson she will just have to learn the hard way.

Juiceey · 16/08/2020 16:56

Make a new thread- do you have this blanket. Simples.

PigglyWigglyWoo · 16/08/2020 16:56

I was going to come on and offer some suggestions, including where one might be found, but you’ve been so rude to other posters I won’t waste my time now.

Feralkidsatthecampsite · 16/08/2020 16:58

Dd11 with anxiety doesn't equal dd 14 with autism as per original post.

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 16/08/2020 17:13

Well tbf you havent given anything to go on to help you find the blanket like make, where and when you bought it

How can you expect people to help you when you are rude?
