Anyone switched from Apple to Android?

Or the other way around, but I'm most interested in the former.

What did you like and dislike about it? Would you recommend it?

Always had Apple phone, but I'm thinking of switching to Android. I do have a Samsung tablet which I don't like very much, but I don't use very often so I think I'm just not that used to it.

The main reason for switching in my head are

  1. Cost
  2. Battery life
  3. Memory
  4. Photos on Samsung phones seem to be much brighter? I'd like that
  5. On my iPhone, I use gmail, chrome, google maps... so all of the google apps!

I'm quite nervous though, everyone seems to think that Android phones are oh so hard to use, which doesn't scare me, but I wonder if it would bug me?

I switched and have never looked back! I FAR prefer Android now.. you aren't tied into Apple stuff. I use google, maps, gmail, chrome, spotify... no difference at all.
I had a samsung note 4 first, then an S8. Then got a cheaper phone (an Honor) and it's just as good at a fraction of the cost. I'd never go back now, and I say that as a previous die hard Mac/phone/everything user!

Downthegarden · 13/08/2020 23:08

I bought an iPad and sold it within 2 days, hated it. Am now completely Android.

quarentini · 13/08/2020 23:12

I went from iPhone to Samsung and absolutely hated it.
I switched backed within a month

DeltaAlphaDelta · 13/08/2020 23:19

I went from iphone to samsung a few years ago and will never have an apple phone tho. I already had a google account, so backed up my apple contacts etc to that, now use that for my samsung. It was very easy. My mid range samsung gets much better battery life than an iphone.

superram · 13/08/2020 23:23

My dad-however it now means I can’t help him with anything. I’m iPhone and won’t change. You can use google, Microsoft, etc. On an iPhone so not tied to apple products.

Northernsoullover · 13/08/2020 23:23

Yes and I haven't looked back. Its been a while since I have had an iPhone so I don't know whether the screens have improved but I can drop my Samsungs without them shattering, the battery life of my later models just keeps on going. I have the S10 now

CherryValanc · 13/08/2020 23:28

Yes. Would never go back to Apple for all the reasons you state plus they way Apple is so limited to only other Apple expensive items.

There is a big of frustration at the start because the functionality is differen, but once you get used to the difference it's great.

thefraggleontherock · 14/08/2020 04:11

I have both... own phone always have iPhones currently have the Xs, work phone is Samsung, not sure of model but one of the newer ones

I personally much prefer my iPhone, I find the Samsung fiddly to operate, its slower and generally just not as easy. I would never have a Samsung as my own personal phone

AugieMarch · 14/08/2020 04:18

I recently switched the other way, Android (most recently Samsung but previously Sony) to apple. I feel quite meh about Apple in general to be honest (I use both a PC and Mac for work depending on where I am and don’t feel Macs are particularly wonderful the way some people do). It’s a bit glitchy (more so than any Android I ever had) and I don’t like the way certain aspects work (eg the touch sensitivity, the way it organises files) but honestly they’re really not that different. I do like using Airdrop, but use Chromecast with my tv and it’s better through Android (unsurprisingly). I’ll probably go back to Android for my next phone - I only changed as couldn’t decide which Android to get so figured I’d give Apple a go.

HopelessSemantics · 14/08/2020 04:45

I did. It took a little while to get used to but it's so much better.

Photos are better
Battery life is better
Nice little features like split screen so you can use two apps at once

All the bloatware annoys me and it doesn't feel quite as seemless as Apple but overall I prefer it

OddSox123 · 14/08/2020 05:50

I switched from Apple to iPhone last year, biggest mistake ever and cant wait fo contract to end! First time I've switched, like you thinking its cheaper
and good photos etc. I have a Samsung A50 and quality is awful, feels so cheap. I have big problems with the touch screen just not working at all or a 'ghost hand-' just typing away making it painful to use. I have restored it countless times.
They work more like a computer system. Also, I dont 100% feel safe on it, kinda feel less secure and your apps etc can much easier be hacked or get a virus, again like a computer.

Dont do it, its cheaper for a reason!!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 14/08/2020 06:06

I used to have an iPhone but switched to Samsung a few years ago. I much prefer Samsung. I dont think there is a huge difference in functionality and ease of use, but battery life is better and you're not tied in to Apple. I really dont get the iPhone love.

torquewench · 14/08/2020 06:11

I switched to Samsung from Apple 2 years ago. I do appreciate not constantly getting messages about icloud storage being full, and I cant see any difference in the battery life of my S8+ since it was new. Samsung's far better quality IMO

ShalomToYouJackie · 14/08/2020 06:23

I went from Apple to Honor.

I hated that by the time I could afford a iPhone, two newer ones seemed to come out.

My Honor phone cost £120 compared to the £500+ for iPhones and it's latest much longer than any Apple phone I've had.

The battery is loads better and I like not being tied into everything Apple. Took a bit of getting used to but will never go back now!

fantasmasgoria1 · 14/08/2020 06:28

My Fiance swapped from many years having an I phone to android 2 years ago and is on his second android phone. He said he will never return to I phone. I had an i phone to try and could not wait to get another android!!!!

ChangeThePassword · 14/08/2020 07:15

I swapped years ago. I now use oneplus, and love it.

Wouldn't go back to paying ridiculous prices for something that is really no better.

I have no idea why android is classed as much harder to use. I think it's just because people moving over need to learn something slightly different, it's really not difficult at all.

LongBlobson · 14/08/2020 08:12

I switched and the rest of my family use android too. DH has a top range Samsung which has lasted him years, me and kids have cheap Motos. 'Android' covers a wide range of phones for any budget! They are not hard to use at all - at least my Moto seemed surprisingly similar to the iPhone I had - and after the initial faff of switching it's been great. I feel liberated!

SengaStrawberry · 14/08/2020 08:13

Me, changed back as soon as I could.

totallyyesno · 14/08/2020 08:15

Me too. I changed from iphone to the cheapest Samsung a few years back and have had no problems at all.

Roussette · 14/08/2020 08:19

Ditto. No idea why anyone has an iPhone to be honest. When I go on a break with my friend, she spends the whole time needing to charge up her iPhone. I am a fairly heavy user and can go a day and a half without a charge, and when I do, OnePlus has 'dash charge' so you can get to 35% in 15 minutes if you need it in a hurry, that will sort you out for the rest of the day! Or to full in less than hour.

Also hardly any bloatware on OnePlus.

Nat6999 · 14/08/2020 08:29

I swapped from Apple to android in 2015 after 5 years with Apple, I always have Samsung phones now & will never go back to Apple. Battery life is better, memory is expandable with memory card, you aren't restricted to licensed apps. Even the cheaper Samsung phones are excellent, I have the S10+, a couple of months after I got my phone ds got the A70, exactly the same memory & capabilities as the S10+ but much cheaper. The S20 & Note 20 look amazing, I'm due for an upgrade next year & am looking forward to what will be available then. I have Samsung phone, tablet, smartwatch & earbuds, they all link up really well, the samsung system for setting up is brilliant for phones & tablet, all apps, passwords, messages transfer over to your new device really easily, takes 20 minutes max.

CarrotPuff · 14/08/2020 16:04

Thanks for your feedback, that's really useful. I think I'll go for it.

@superram I know you can use all these apps on any phone, and I do. My point was, if I don't use inbuilt iPhone maps, browser, etc, then what's the point of having one? They are probably better integrated on Android.

@OddSox123 I believe the A series for Samsung are the cheaper ones, so it might be a reason. S is the more luxurious range, more on par with iPhone.

I went from iPhone to a Samsung galaxy. Lasted 3 days and switched back. I hated it.

Mummysgonetobed · 14/08/2020 19:33

Tried to switch this time and got the newest Samsung. I cannot get on with android, it’s all wrong. I switched back within a week. Apple all the way for me.

PutThemInTheIronMaiden · 18/10/2020 13:33

Jumping onto this even though it's bee a while since the last reply because I was going to ask the same question. I'm almost certainly going to make the leap!

Now to decide between the Samsung 20+ and the Oneplus 8Pro as I want a phone I'm going to keep for years.
