Storm induced anxiety

Is that even a thing? We have the most spectacular thunder and lightening storm going on just now for the past hour or so and no signs of letting up and it's giving me serious anxiety. My pulse is racing and I just want to go and hide under the bed til it's over!
I think this might be the best/worse storm I've ever seen in my 30+years but is really freaking me out.

It will pass!

I had anxiety about the heat on Sunday, had a full blown panic attack as it felt so oppressive.

Could you try putting on a movie you really like and drowning it out?

Flyinggeese · 11/08/2020 22:51

Hi OP can you explain/figure out what exactly you’re anxious about? Are you in a safe spot indoors etc?

SentientAndCognisant · 11/08/2020 22:52

One can be anxious about virtually anything.anxiety is v personal
Avoidance and distraction if you’re anxious
Mindfulness app also help, lots of free sites. Headspace has some free content

dementedma · 11/08/2020 22:53

Its the most lightning I've ever seen in one night! Epic weather here in Central Scotland..and a wee bit scary

CherryPavlova · 11/08/2020 22:53

I’d love a storm here. So hot.

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 11/08/2020 22:54

It will pass. It won't last long. If you like to watch, go in a dark room and watch the lightning through a window. If you don't like it, do something that will distract you. It will be over before you know it.

BobsYerUnclee · 11/08/2020 22:58

I'm another one in Central Scotland. This is the most spectacular light show I've ever seen here!

OP, we're having building works done and currently have no roof - I feel your anxiety. Mother Nature is out tonight, showing us what she's got. Absolutely bloody incredible.

Iwonder777 · 11/08/2020 22:59

Crazy strobe like silent lightening here in Scotland,

Like a light show.

Never seen anything like it

thesoundofthepolice · 11/08/2020 23:00

I'm hardly ever anxious but wow, this is another level! The biggest crack of lightening just went off and I really had to talk myself down, it's ridiculous. I've never seen anything like it but it's fascinating.
I'm glued to the window watching it it it's just sent my heart rate sky high.

@dementedma I'm in Edinburgh and it's possibly the longest/loudest/craziest storm I've seen. It's amazing.

Wow I'm so envious sorry not helpful at all

I'm remember in Australia 20 years ago witnessing the most powerful thunderstorm and lightning and feeling both terrified and fascinated at the same time.

The heat in the south east of England has been totally oppressive and I'm very anxious that tomorrow is set for 36 😩🥵

MeMyselfAye · 11/08/2020 23:03

I’m in Edinburgh too op, it’s crazy! I’ve never seen such constant lightening like this

RandomMess · 11/08/2020 23:04

Our storm was 5-6 hours last night!! Amazing photos on FB today, sadly I slept through most of it...

Flyinggeese · 11/08/2020 23:04

OP would you find it helpful to watch for the storm moving away, like with a lightning map

Flyinggeese · 11/08/2020 23:05

Sorry sent too soon, like this? www.lightningmaps.org/?lang=en

Obvious don’t click if it won’t help.

indemMUND · 11/08/2020 23:05

It's a storm. They happen, they pass. If you're inside and safe then why worry so much? What's the worst case scenario?

Dogssox · 11/08/2020 23:14

Oh woooow I've never seen anything like this before!

RoseTintedAtuin · 11/08/2020 23:15

Hi OP I’m in the same storm! It really is amazing and long! Seems to be sheet lightening for the most part and although I love thunder and lightening I did check that you don’t get struck inside your home Wink
It’ll be over soon I’m sure

thesoundofthepolice · 11/08/2020 23:16

I get that's it's irrational, I'm in myself which i don't think is helping.
It's so amazing, I can't tear myself away from watching it even if it is scaring me a bit

OP posts:
thesoundofthepolice · 11/08/2020 23:18

@RoseTintedAtuin I might have googled the same thing when I sounded like it was right above my house 😂

We’re getting a storm here in Manchester, my lightning alert app is pinging.

Way too hot, hope it clears the air.

Passthecake30 · 11/08/2020 23:23

I’m with you OP. I’m in Essex atm so the storm isn’t here yet, but I’m terrified of them, my kids know and sit with me..! I’m worried, looking at what’s in store over the next few days. Have you got a room that hasn’t got a window, like a utility room? If not, a room with blackout curtains?

SunInTheSkyYouKnowHowIFeel · 11/08/2020 23:24

Just sing.... Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens, bright copper kettles and warm woollen mittens. Brown paper packages tied up with string, these are a few of my favourite things...

Wankpuffin · 11/08/2020 23:26

It’s at it’s peak now where I am.

37 weeks pregnant and boiling to death - finally a bit of breeze and relief!

Dogssox · 11/08/2020 23:27

OMgeeeeeee that thunder!!!

Miljea · 11/08/2020 23:29

Wow. Actual envy.

I love a good storm. Actually, genuinely love it!

I think I can explain your anxiety. It's your brain's amygdala, the most primitive part of your brain trying to decipher whether to send 'Fight' or 'Flight' messages through.

Maybe, if you can recognise that, sit back and enjoy? Seriously. Go 'Wow!' -at the biggies! It's only a bunch of thuggy electricity!
