Why does my crustless quiche taste more like an omelette than a quiche?

Why does a harness stop a dog pulling? (Miraculous change in DDog. Not even trying to pull any more)

How do you know if the police are actually the police? I'm talking more about undercover or plain clothes. A man appeared in my neighbour's garden the other day and started asking me questions. He flashed a badge, but I could never tell if it was real or not and I'm sure they must be easy to purchase online. Is there an undercover officer authentication service I could call?

Athenajm80 · 11/08/2020 22:02

Why does my ceiling fan allegedly cool the air if it spins one way but circulate hot air if it goes the other way? I understand a bit but then at the same time don't cause whether it's clockwise or anti clockwise heat still rises and the fan blades are still spinning.

re the 👮🏻‍♀️ it's the warrant card which has their photograph and title on, you can always request to be allowed to call 101, to verify them etc

What do you put in your crustless quiche?

Followed a recipe. Broccoli and ham, mixture of milk, cream and 5 eggs, seasoning - cheese on top. Baked for 40 mins on 180c

Why can't I be bothered to go to bed, even though I'm tired?

YouveCatToBeKittenMe · 11/08/2020 22:23

Why is there now such a wide area between crops and the edge of the fields
When I was growing up in the 80s I’m sure the crops were planted right up to the edge of the fields, now there is a gap about 2 meters around the edge. Why? What changed?

FlamboyenceofFlamingos · 11/08/2020 22:23

@CoatTails I misread that as why does a hamster stop my dog pulling, and thought you had found some ingenious solution. Clearly I need an eye test

Lack of "me time". I bet you've got kids / demanding job, or some such. Adults with no such responsibilities usually go to bed when they're tired, rather than waiting until they're exhausted. There's a fancy name for it but I can't remember it.

Why is a new mattress never as comfortable as the old one, even when the old one was absolutely buggered?

@ALongHardWinter

Esiotrot87 Why do men take so long to do a poo? Grin Good question! I am watching with interest for answers to this one!
This is mercifully a phenomenon I have never experienced in real life but it seems it's very common.

My suggestion is that it's purely because they want to. If they're sitting on the toilet they don't have to participate in the daily grind of washing dishes and reading to small children. It can't be a physical reason or else all men would do it...

Maybe this is dating advice for my daughter actually when she is older. Take note of toilet habits because anyone who disappears for half an hour when you're young and carefree will only get worse when you're the stressed parents of a newborn...

Clymene · 11/08/2020 22:49

Yes I have all those things @SisyphusAndTheRockOfUntidiness. And menopause. But aargh it's so annoying! Right I'm going to bed right now!

Thank you.

SisyphusAndTheRockOfUntidiness · 11/08/2020 22:58

@Clymene Grin

@isabellerossignol I mentioned the "men doing a poo" thing to DH (once I'd finished laughing) & he admitted he doesn't know any men who can do it quickly. But I have previously wondered if it's a physical/biological thing - women being so much more designed to push things out, as it were. Men, not so much. #notadoctor

It doesn't excuse the smell though. I am convinced that men are worse in this regard as well.

Why do hens lay eggs every day? Does it hurt? If a hen was wild, and not domesticated would they still lay eggs all over the place?
What are the occupations of the inhabitants of the island of Stromboli?

Babamamananarama · 11/08/2020 23:08

Athena re the ceiling fan: because the blades are angled so when they rotate one way they lift the air below and push it up, and when they go the other way they scoop air from above and push it down. Theoretically the air above the fan blades is the warm air so it's either pushing the warm air down into the room or doing the opposite - that is my guess.

Babamamananarama · 11/08/2020 23:09

Kind of like the way a corkscrew or drill bit works.

InTropicalTrumpsLand · 11/08/2020 23:19

Can vegans ride horses?

@sproutsandparsnips Depends on the species, it has to do with their reproduction cycle. I wouldn't be surprised if they were artificially selected for their egg laying ability - they certainly were for size and maturation rate.

Field margins are good for biodiversity- in hedgerows for wild flowers, insects- and may also increase crop yields
May also be easier for some farm machinery efficiently

FlamboyenceofFlamingos · 11/08/2020 23:58

Why make a crustless quiche in the first place? I find that the crust is needed to fulfill the crust to filling ratio. I am struggling to sleep and suddenly quiche consistency seems paramount in my mind

Since 2005 all arable farmers have to adhere to 'Cross compliance' rules, one of which is that crops can only be grown >2m away from the (centre of) the hedge. Slightly prior to this there was the Countryside Stewardship Scheme in which the farmer could choose to participate (and be paid) for not growing crops in the 2m from the edge of where the crop usually is.

To further confuse things there are/were some 6m options - uncropped although grass could be planted and cut for hay, and wider conservation headlands etc etc.

To answer the egg one, chickens have been bred to lay more eggs, and for longer. Most other birds depend (mostly) on day length to decide when to lay eggs and then hatch them. Chickens kept truly free-range (not those Happy Egg or super market 'free range' fakers with their supplementary lighting) still follow the natural cycle, more so if they are older less commercial breeds.

I don't know if it hurts as such, but t=some do make a very distinctive call/noise when they've laid an egg.
