Like tips of what’s a good area that’s not too far from the beach
I’ve seen one house on right move I’ll add a link

Would rather get a detached but only really want to spend about 350k

Here

Just looking for ideas of what you can get for around 350

Ideally like to live as close to the beach as possible but I know that’s not realistic on our budget

No idea about closeness to beaches but house 2 is much nicer than the other one.

ramblingsonthego · 11/08/2020 16:48

Both houses are on the Winton/Moordown area. Winton is a lot of student housing. Both properties are far enough up the Moordown end so you shouldn't have too many issues although you will still get some student properties.

Both are nowhere near the beach! You would have to drive or bus it, or you could walk it in about 45 minutes depending how fast you walk.

What do you want from an area? Schools? Nightlife? I can help further but need to know lifestyle.

ramblingsonthego · 11/08/2020 16:51

Also where would you be working? As getting across the conurbation can be a ballache. It gets so clogged with traffic.

ramblingsonthego · 11/08/2020 16:54

With 350k you could have this one. The area is good (you may get student neighbours but a lot less than winton)

Yeah I know we can’t afford right by the beach, could possible go up a bit further maybe 400-450k but prefer to keep the house costs lower so can enjoy a more relaxed lifestyle
Dh would be working in either Poole or Bournemouth

I suppose lifestyle the dream would be to spend as much time as possible on the beach
And just enjoy nice restaurants and cafes and a few sporty things like cycling, skating and swimming

Just a nice quiet relaxed life really

One other thing we could consider is staying where we are which is a very nice area, and maybe buying a little 1 bed flat for a holiday stay we could put sofa beds in the living room
And I guess it could be a bit of an investment too

OP posts:
Lardlizard · 11/08/2020 19:01

Rambling that’s big for 350
I don’t like the front door but that can soon be changed, I’d go for an old fashioned wooden stained glass door I think on that house
Thanks for pointing it out

What’s the conurbation?

CrystalMaisie · 11/08/2020 19:03

My husband and his sibling both grew up in Winton, perfectly nice enough, good schools. Both moved away at 18 and we go back to visit family, but neither would ever go back to live.

Lurleene · 11/08/2020 19:34

Southbourne would be the ideal area for what you describe, but at least 400 is more realistic than 350.

Lardlizard · 11/08/2020 19:40

Crystal why’s that out of interest and where are our you now ?

OP posts:
Lardlizard · 11/08/2020 19:41

I’ll hve a look at southborne I don’t I’m not a fan of the beach there, but I don’t mind a bit of a drive

Here Perhaps something like with a bit of work could make a nice holiday flat ?

Having never owned a flat I don’t get how the 76 year lease thing works
It says ground rent 100 quid a year sounds cheap ?

76 years is very low on the lease. Mortgage companies normally require 80 years + although some go down to 70 years +. It will cost you probably about 10-12k to extend the lease on the flat. You would be liable for your legal fees and the freeholders legal fees as well as the lease premium.

With the lifestyle you want Southbourne would be your best bet. Or Hengistbury Head, which is fab for quieter beaches and walks. Although your budget would have to go up to 450 I suspect.

Can i ask why you don't like the beach at Southbourne? Its more the beach that locals go to when the hoards descend in the summer.

WildRosie · 11/08/2020 22:12

Southbourne beach was where our family used to go from the 60s until 1974. The lights on the promenade used to be different coloured globes - sadly, no more.

iMatter · 11/08/2020 22:19

Southbourne has a lovely beach.

It's so much quieter than B'mth/Poole.

House prices are cheaper and you're near Hengistbury Head.

The High Street is good too and within walking distance.

JaJaDingDong · 11/08/2020 23:00

Op "conurbation" means "built up area of a town" Smile

CrystalMaisie · 12/08/2020 14:00

@Lardlizard my dh says it was a great place to grow up, great bus system so can get around easily, the beach, entertainment, the town etc.
Both moved away for job/ uni closer to London. Now I’m Home Counties. I asked if any of his school friends still lived there, he could think of one or two.

mindutopia · 12/08/2020 14:13

I work in London and live in Dorset (but not Poole/Bournemouth, further out) and I honestly wouldn't move to Poole/Bournemouth for a 'more relaxed lifestyle'. In many places, unless you're living in Sandbanks or over in Purbeck or perhaps closer to Hengistbury Head, it's as congested and busy as parts of greater London. Why not look at other areas of the coast? Purbeck is very nice, though more difficult commute unless the chain ferry is running, though can take the train. More rural areas outside of town, or look further west, near Dorchester and Weymouth, which have train links to Poole/Bournemouth. Dorchester is like 15 minutes drive from the sea (and a much nicer part of the coast too, I think). You'll also get a lot more for your money. I live in West Dorset and just comparing rents, we were paying the same for a 4 bed detached house with a massive garden as my friend was for a tiny 2 bed flat with hardly any garden in Poole.

Punxsutawney · 12/08/2020 14:21

I think last year Bournemouth was rated the 3rd worst palace in the Uk for traffic congestion.

Lardlizard · 12/08/2020 16:24

Try the traffic is a bit of an issue thanks for explaining conurbation to me Smile something new I’ve learnt today
I did like Weymouth just not as much
Plus it further to drive to London etc

@Lardlizard I live very close to the houses you posted if you have any specific questions Smile
