Accidentally put salted butter in baby's food, should I be worried?

The other day I was making a recipe from one of the weaning books that called for a tiny bit of butter with some mashed potato and other veggies. I've just been in the fridge fro something else and realised I must have used the salted butter as the unsalted is open!
It wouldn't have been much at all, he didn't have cheese or anything that day and I never add salt to any of his meals. He seems fine but should I be worried? Everything I've read says baby's kidneys can be affected by this, but as a one off does anyone know if we should be ok?

He's still giving wet nappies and dirty nappies, perfectly happy in himself well, despite the heat, but I'm a bit worried now!

I was a bit dubious about adding butter at all and am now kicking myself!

Don't be worried he will be absolutely fine.
A tiny bit of butter with an even tinier bit of salt will not harm him

WorraLiberty · 08/08/2020 17:42

He'll be absolutely fine, don't worry.

It wasn't that long ago baby food recipes just said 'add butter' and you grabbed whatever you had in the fridge.

PotteringAlong · 08/08/2020 17:42

How much salt do you reckon their actually is in the tiny bit of salted butter they actually ate? This is a non issue, really it is.

He will be fine. Honestly. X

edwinbear · 08/08/2020 17:43

He will be absolutely fine OP, don’t worry about it a minute longer! Smile

Bunnybigears · 08/08/2020 17:43

He will be fine, its a one off, dont worry.

Cococoin · 08/08/2020 17:43

First baby? It’s fine.

Noflora · 08/08/2020 17:43

He will be fine. A one off is nothing to worry about at all. Babies have not always been advised not to have any salt and they didn't all get kidney problems even with regular salt intake.

Spudlet · 08/08/2020 17:44

He’ll be fine Smile It would have been a tiny bit as a one-off - it might be a problem of you did it every day but clearly you’re not so don’t sweat it 👍

dementedpixie · 08/08/2020 17:44

Yes of course it's fine. There's hardly any salt in it anyway and you only used a tiny amount

BendingSpoons · 08/08/2020 17:44

It will be a tiny amount of salt and will be fine. You won't have used that much butter, and it's not mega salty. Plus it's a one off. It's easy to give too much salt to babies but they can have some like in cheese.

daisypond · 08/08/2020 17:46

Eh? I didn’t even know unsalted butter was a thing. It’s all slightly salted...isn’t it? It’s all just butter. Your baby will be fine.

BlueThursday · 08/08/2020 17:46

If you’d given prepackaged baby food it would likely have had more salt than your spot of butter

In a few months baby will likely be eating soil so don’t worry Grin

Peterbishopssarcasticsmile · 08/08/2020 17:46

Ha yes how did you guess it was first baby?! PFB all over!
Thank you, it was just one of those brainworms that once I'd realised I couldn't get it out of my head!

Have checked my butter and it says 1.5% of 250g is salt so the whole thing only contains 3.75g of salt. The amount of butter you used will have a very small amount of salt in it. It really isn't anything to worry about. I don't think I ever used unsalted butter when my kids were babies

welshweasel · 08/08/2020 17:51

I only ever used normal salted butter for cooking with my kids. Wouldn’t have occurred to me to buy separate butter for them.

Aardvarkitsabloodyaardvark · 08/08/2020 17:51

Don't worry love. Its fine to ask, most of us are too old to have had this way of checking lol.
It's OK Flowers

dementedpixie · 08/08/2020 17:51

I buy unsalted sometimes but its for baking recipes not baby food

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 08/08/2020 17:54

This is your first baby, isn't it?

zigaziga · 08/08/2020 17:56

Ha I checked levels of salt in everything for my first baby.
My second baby who is actually now a toddler barely eats anything, a few bites a day if that.. sometimes half her intake of food in a day will be soil, crayon.. God knows what else.

orangejuicer · 08/08/2020 18:04

It's fine OP (and ignore the PFB remarks, sometimes you just want that reassurance)

namechange8765433 · 08/08/2020 18:04

Ah bless you, I love that you've asked this as it reminds me (as I listen to my 3 playing Minecraft when I should be cooking them tea) of those new baby days where I had those sorts of concerns.

Makes me YEARN.

Anyway, perfectly legitimate concern but everyone has said, 'be reet' (as we say in Yorkshire). You sound like a lovely conscientious mum. Flowers.

Now, must follow suit and get tea on for this lot!

namechange8765433 · 08/08/2020 18:05

as everyone has said

Moltenpink · 08/08/2020 18:08

I used to get really confused about this too, all the baby books say zero salt allowed, but then recipes had cheese and other ingredients containing salt. As someone who takes things literally, it really put me off cooking for my babies.

Trinketsfor20 · 08/08/2020 18:08

Ah.
Second baby here. No baby food has been made. Eats whatever we are eating now she is 6-7 months and rolls with the general chaos between 4 year old brother, chaotic furry dog and life in general. Currently eating some Bolognese with DS - and randomly - some mango. And giggling. She’ll live.
