When you pay over a grand to rent a 3 bed house, and you are told one of the beds has "stuff stored on it" how would you react?

Leave tomorrow for a last minute seaside getaway. Booked a 3 bed house for me dp and 2dds. Owner is very odd, won't do anything over e mail, everything via long and rambly phone calls.
He seemed quite put out when I said I intended to use all the rooms, and has only yesterday mentioned that the top bunk (that my DD has her eye on) is not in action as he has "stuff stored on it".

I have a bad feeling about it, despite it saying child friendly, I don't think he wants small kids there, and I think if I object he could still cancel. But, I am a bit pissed off to not have free choice of what beds to use, especially as I had to pay £60 on top for bedding and towels. Am I being unreasonable?

I stayed in an apartment in Copenhagen for a weekend back in the nineties. The old man who lived there moved into his garden shed for the duration.

ColdCottage · 08/08/2020 14:10

I'd take a video of when I walked in and go I to each room. Covers you.

This is going to be a glorious anti climax. He gave us the key code early, there are a few duvets on the top bunk, easily moved if we choose, and the house is lovely. No bodies, no drama but unfortunately no Michael Fassbender. I might just begin to unclench now.

Well the thread's loss is your gain, I'm so glad it seems ok. Have a good holiday Wine

I'd say well it needs to be moved ASAP or we'll expect a full refund as you've hired a 3 bedroom place for a reason.

Startofsomethingnew20 · 08/08/2020 15:40

Glad you’re in though op :)

[hopeful voice on] Have you checked the visitors book for any oddities yet?

Have a lovely holiday, Kent coastal towns are my favourite, so many lovely places to visit, and lovely fresh fish.

CodenameVillanelle · 08/08/2020 16:39

So glad for you! Have a wonderful holiday

rumblingtumtum · 08/08/2020 20:29

Ha ha, yes op please make something up. Or anyone with a good imagination!

Ellmau · 08/08/2020 23:31

Ah, but what’s inside the duvets?

imissthesouth · 08/08/2020 23:33

Either move the stuff to somewhere out the way (asking for a reduced rent since you can't use the house freely) or tell him you won't accept it stored there. You're reneging the whole house, not to be told that some stuff is stored there

sideorderofchips · 09/08/2020 00:00

Is this going to be another cancel the cheque?

Have a great holiday op

SunInTheSkyYouKnowHowIFeel · 09/08/2020 20:39

sideorderofchips I think so!

Glad all was well when you arrived, although slightly disappointed it wasnt something odd on the top bunk. Have a nice rest of your holiday!

billy1966 · 09/08/2020 20:49

Oh good. Have a lovely holiday.

Belleende · 10/08/2020 07:38

Quick holiday update. Found out three groups of friends are here this week, have arranged some reciprocal babysitting so we can have a night out, our first since February!!! The weather is fab. Apart from wanting to kill all seagulls, everything is well. I think Covid has just made my brain expect the worst.

That's just nuts OP. Tell him you have paid for the house so he can move the stuff while you are there. Then make sure you take before and after pictures of the place.

Have you not read the full thread?

The OP found there was a blow-up sex doll and loads of bondage equipment there. It turns out they use the house for swinger parties. The owner invited the OP and her husband to join in. That's why they don't want children staying.
