When you pay over a grand to rent a 3 bed house, and you are told one of the beds has "stuff stored on it" how would you react?

Leave tomorrow for a last minute seaside getaway. Booked a 3 bed house for me dp and 2dds. Owner is very odd, won't do anything over e mail, everything via long and rambly phone calls.
He seemed quite put out when I said I intended to use all the rooms, and has only yesterday mentioned that the top bunk (that my DD has her eye on) is not in action as he has "stuff stored on it".

I have a bad feeling about it, despite it saying child friendly, I don't think he wants small kids there, and I think if I object he could still cancel. But, I am a bit pissed off to not have free choice of what beds to use, especially as I had to pay £60 on top for bedding and towels. Am I being unreasonable?

Coming on to placemark but also, why of all places, store stuff on a top bunk? I suspect top bunk is broken and some jiggery pokery going on...

Belleende · 08/08/2020 09:11

I am already crafting the review in my head. The first line is, "if you don't like extensive phone calls, this is not the holiday home for you..."

Anything less than Micheal Fassbender on the top bunk is going to be a disappointment.

Cancelled my 4pm plans! 🤣

@Belleende

Well the day has got off to a cracking start. Dd2 up 3 times in the night, Dd1 being a pain cue a screaming match with DP. I have such a feeling of creeping dread about this much needed holiday.
The holiday hasn't started until you get the row out of the way Grin

It used to be quite common that holiday homes would be full of the owners' stuff, where they were second or inherited homes, but has become less common, especially when booking through an agency IME. Cleaning standards have also improved immeasurably. Let's hope this isn't like the places we had our early family holidays in 25 years ago.....

Intrigue has me posting here

FilledSoda · 08/08/2020 09:32

I'm already uneasy about the phone calls. Ideally all communication is done through the platform so you have a clear paper trail .
I'd be looking for cameras but I'm a suspicious person

This holiday was also supposed to be a digital detox, time away from screens and mums net. Hmmm.

Checking in for updates later.

Hope it's all fine for you OP and you have a much needed break. X

Don't start the digital detox until you've updated us though Grin

You can do that.....after you update us all Grin

I think digital detox has actually been shown to be less beneficial for relaxation and stress relief than posting updates for bored parents to enjoy though Wink

Just promise to update when you get back if nothing else?

It is vital I learn what is on that top bunk.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 08/08/2020 09:50

I hope hes not storing a body Grin

VincaMinor · 08/08/2020 09:54

Maybe he's a hoarder and his own house is packed to the rafters with stuff and it's started to spill over into the holiday let top bunk.

Seracursoren · 08/08/2020 09:59

@MuseumOfYou

We are not allowed to check I til 4, even if the place is ready he texts the door code at 3.55 precisely

sets reminder

I made a mental note of the 4pm check in, realised you have your game hat on with an actual reminder Grin

Will it be a case of “that nice couple renting my holiday house have made a sex tape ... of course, they don’t know that yet”?

MrsSpookyM · 08/08/2020 10:18

Belleende · 08/08/2020 10:19

In this heat, no way DP will be allowed within ten feet. He is a bit grumpy

Bet you wouldn’t kick Mr Fassbender off the top bunk though Smile

All the reviews are great, except 2 that cite his strange behavior which I totally recognise
From the reviews it sounds like the guy is odd but the actual holiday home will be fine. Lucky he is away

Oh no, he would be an exception.

In the 60s my husbands family rented a holiday home and the family living there were going to spend the week in the back shed. Husband's family found somewhere else to stay. Grin

Oh dear. Can't wait to hear how this pans out!

SabrinaThwaite · 08/08/2020 11:08

Twenty years ago we stayed in a fabulous B&B in Kerry - in the summer the parents kicked the kids out to live in the garage and rented their rooms out.
