It's utterly spectacular. Breathtaking. Glorious.

I've driven through it quite a few times and it always takes my breath away.

Yes!

Most beautiful country in the world.

SerenityNowwwww · 07/08/2020 22:44

Aren’t there building plans being provided for there? 😳

Dugheed · 07/08/2020 22:47

Glencoe is the most beautiful place in the world.

HazelBite · 07/08/2020 22:50

Glencoe is truly spectacular, to drive from Loch Ness to Glasgow via Glencoe is such a lovely trip cross the most beautiful countryside.

DuesToTheDirt · 07/08/2020 22:52

I find it.... Menacing. Traumatic. Beautiful yes, but...

Timeforanotherusername · 07/08/2020 22:56

Dues yeah a few of my granny's clan were murdered there.

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 07/08/2020 22:57

Many many times. And it never ceases to amaze and inspire me. I always think ‘And this is the UK (but Scotland, obviously!). Awe inspiring, breath taking and, in parts, other worldly.

I adore it.

And if you ever get the chance, get the Sleeper back from Fort William to Euston at the height of summer. It stays light away past your bedtime and you see zero - zero - roads. Magical.

MaxNormal · 07/08/2020 23:00

@diplodocusinermine I've reluctantly come to the conclusion too that wild camping should be banned.
I've been really upset at what's been happening in the countryside, particularly this summer.

Pinksmyfavoritecolour · 07/08/2020 23:02

It took my breath away the first time I drove through Glencoe, it’s so stunning. The road to applecross Is something I’ll never forget, when we got there I genuinely thought I was going to have to stay forever coz I was so traumatised I didn’t think I could go back over that road, I so want to go back because it’s one of the best Most peaceful beautiful days of my life there, but too scared of that road.

AdaColeman · 07/08/2020 23:22

Though it was many many years ago, I still remember how dramatic the landscape was. The weather was wet with glowering low dark cloud, then ahead of us, suddenly there was a break in the cloud and a flash of sunlight lit up the hillside.
Such a beautiful place, yet to be the scene of a massacre.

artyandtarty · 07/08/2020 23:30

Can anyone elaborate on where this road is as I'm currently staying at Loch Lomond & Glencoe doesn't seem too far away.

P.S I must say that the scenery here has taken my breath away too. First time in Scotland on a break away & we are definitely coming back!

artyandtarty · 07/08/2020 23:33

Ok so partner says we have already driven on the A82 (to Oban ) ... just not taken the route through Glencoe. This is now on our to do list : )

DramaAlpaca · 07/08/2020 23:35

Yes, many years ago. A stunning, atmospheric, haunting yet utterly beautiful place. I'd love to go back with DH one day soon.

Pericombobulations · 08/08/2020 00:08

Yes but I suspect my ancestors were also caught up in the horrible murders there as I couldn't stay, the feeling of horror, fear and tragedy was overwhelming. Just wanted to get out as quick as possible. Went in the early 1990's and tried to stop at the visitors centre, but the feelings were too strong so we didnt stay.

KatherineParr4 · 08/08/2020 00:22

It is very beautiful but also menacing. I find it very oppressive and sad. Some terrible things happened there. It isn’t a happy place at all.

KatherineParr4 · 08/08/2020 00:24

I agree that wild camping should be banned too. It’s totally shocking how people are behaving and the mess they are making.

Nikki360 · 08/08/2020 00:26

It's just incredibly literally took my breath away when I first was there. So atmospheric just amazing !

Eve · 08/08/2020 00:30

Many many years ago , before DH and kids I worked in Scotland.

1 Really cold but sunny morning decided to go skiing , drove there in my Astra convertible ( I loved that car!!) top down , ski suit , gloves and hat on , music up loud.

I Probably ( quite definitely) looked a complete twit but it was a fabulous drive.

MrsAvocet · 08/08/2020 00:31

Many times, but I will never forget the first time. It was May half term week one year in the mid 1970s. I was about 9 or 10 and we were en route to a family holiday in a cottage in the Ullapool area. My Dad always preferred to drive through the night, and I'd fallen asleep after we'd stopped at the last services on the M6. Next thing I knew, my Mum was waking me up for some breakfast just after dawn in Glencoe. The sky was an amazing pinky purple, and through the clearing mist I spotted dozens of rabbits and probably the first wild deer I had ever seen, staring back at me. We live in the countryside now, so I am blessed with seeing wildlife on a regular basis, but as a young child brought up in the middle of a town this was a very unusual and quite magical experience. That type of holiday was far less popular back then than it is now and I used to get teased at school for going on "boring" holidays but I thought it was absolutely wonderful. There we were, in this silent, beautiful yet eerie place, surrounded by majestic scenery and animals that I had previously only seen on tv - it was breathtaking. There was no litter then. No other humans come to that. Just us, nature, and my Mum making the most delicious bacon butties on a camping stove in a layby. Perfect, and not boring at all. I wish I could turn the clock back to then.

MrsMoastyToasty · 08/08/2020 00:41

We travel up regularly (from Bristol) on our way to Mull. We have a traditional of playing Bat Out Of Hell by Meatloaf as we're driving through.

BeaUnder · 08/08/2020 00:54

I think most of the roads in Scotland are amazing. Its just the prettiest place to be. I loved the drive from Loch Lomond to Oman via Glencoe (awesome breakfast stop at Glencoe).

CormoranStrike · 08/08/2020 06:22

Yes - met this chap there last week, and I really was standing this close!

Have you driven through Glencoe?
weehoo · 08/08/2020 06:30

I grew up not far away and we would sometimes go there for a day trip as a child. I remember the massive snowdrifts by the roadside.

We were back there just before Christmas last year and caught the last ski lift up at the ski resort. Absolutely magical time with the kids then heard the awful news on Xmas day that the ski centre had burnt down

grannycake · 08/08/2020 06:42

Yes - we went on our honeymoon to Glencoe - in a folding caravan in February! It was 38 years ago though

WaltzingBetty · 08/08/2020 06:59

@artyandtarty it's the A82 that folk are talking about. With the hills rising around you as you come from Rannoch moor. Don't worry about driving the small road through Glencoe village.

It is a beautiful drive but there are many other beautiful drives in Scotland too - I think this is just one where all the tourists end up
