He doesn’t believe in corona

So I’m due to meet my friend this weekend for the first time in months, but her partner doesn’t believe in corona. He says it was all made up by the government, it doesn’t exist and will not wear a mask anywhere.

My view is whether it’s been exaggerated figure wise or not, it is there and we all need to do our bit and just wear a bloody mask, cool or not cool looking doesn’t matter

How is everyone feeling about it now? Am I still being over the top washing my hands and keeping my kids protected? Or are we all just living like it doesn’t exist anymore?

He's an idiot. You're not

steppemum · 06/08/2020 11:20

you should still be:
social distancing
washing hands
wearing a mask in shops
not meeting in large groups indoors.

I'm not sure why anyone would think that the government woudl make up something to trash the economy?
He is an idiot

HollowTalk · 06/08/2020 11:21

Is he saying it's an international conspiracy? That countries who hate each other have agreed on this one issue in order to... ummm create economic havoc in their own country?

Lalamum2 · 06/08/2020 11:26

Thanks girls, it does make me feel a bit better. My whole family have been really strict since day dot, I had a 2 month old baby and my mum went from seeing him everyday to waving through a window. It broke her heart but unless we all pulled together it wouldn’t go away

I don’t want to go now this weekend and I know it will cause arguments because everyone in my circle now doesn’t care and I’m the only one still making the kids wash their hands 30,000 times a day

There's a 3rd peak in Hong Kong probably due to people quarantining after travel etc but members of their households carrying on going out...

I'm currently still self-isolating after an operation and won't be able to leave the house until 19th August.

howfarwevecome · 06/08/2020 11:47

He's an idiot.

And I am a bad person because I know a certain percentage of people are going to get ill from it anyways, so I actively hope it's people like this.

SerenityNowwwww · 06/08/2020 11:49

Made up? So it’s an international conspiracy, orchestrated by all these governments... does he know why or how? I’d be fascinated to hear his ideas...

bluebird243 · 06/08/2020 11:51

He's thick and extremely selfish. With no social awareness or social conscience which I would find worrying.

I wouldn't visit. I wouldn't be in a relationship with such an idiot either.

I'm really curious about how anyone can seriously believe this. Does he think all those doctors and nurses working in Covid wards are making it up, or that they've been wearing full PPE in a heatwave for the fun of it? How does he account for those known healthcare professionals' deaths? Are the people mourning their colleagues also making it all up? What does he imagine the government would gain from sending the economy into freefall?

I think if I were you I'd cancel the visit - partly because of the safety aspect, but mostly because I don't think I could be polite to someone pontificating with this degree of sheer idiocy.

SerenityNowwwww · 06/08/2020 12:17

I’d cancel because he’s not taking it seriously (helps neck - and other peoples at risk) plus of probably get into a man argument.

KatharinaRosalie · 06/08/2020 12:19

Those people who think that millions and millions of people are all in on this massive conspiracy have never tried to manage any projects. It's bloody impossible to get just a handful of people to cooperate, not to mention keeping things confidential.

SerenityNowwwww · 06/08/2020 12:35

But only he knows the truth... there’s a little insight into his psychology right there.

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 06/08/2020 12:39

It would be amazing if your friend was right all along and not actually a complete fool and dangerous with it!

If it was all "fake" news and made up numbers to scare people the why the global economic doom and gloom?

For the wise amongst us with a bit of understanding and appreciation of the context and big picture forward thinking types (I am sure there are plenty other sensible smart mums Mums Net out there) we could see what was coming all along after observing the news from source mainland China and then Italy.

I personally believe that the news is not wholly accurate (not saying it is wake) but because so much is unknown I rather suspect things may at times even be worst than officially recorded and so broadcast as news. I am not saying the UK Covid fatalities at 55k etc is made up as of course behind each number was a former loved Brit real person not just a damn number! I understand the official statistical analysis may conversely adjust the numbers downwards supposedly but nevertheless this number is scary and a bit more than say that recorded by the Taiwanese government. Taiwan is an advance free first world high tech nation close to the mainland China source with many economic and other ties with 25 million people. Taiwan only so far recorded just seven yes 7 (or next to none) Covid fatalities. It has the best developed nations progress report on Covid leadership people and economic management and the population there evidently follow and appreciate all Covid measures imposed to save their lives. We in the UK have a mixed bag with some more concerned (seemingly) with their rights and freedoms (including to be killed by Covid) than their health and safety and the lives of those around them. Others in the UK at the other extreme (medically vulnerable) feel overtly petrified and will put up with remaining shielded and protected in their home imprisonment bubble. We all therefore need to at least stick to scientific lead guidelines and rules as imposed globally and for a big concerted community effort to endure more discomfort and inconvenience to get on with it masked up etc. Then finally one day we don't need these measures at all when the virus eventually burns up. As with SARs and MERS similar coronaviruses before, I doubt despite the feel good hype that there will be any real cure but possibly improved medical interventions and treatments but still no magic cure all protection against Covid.

Tell your friend to take care of himself if nothing else!

GlacindaTheTroll · 06/08/2020 12:41

He really believes that the rapacious Tory party are deliberately trashing the economy for no good reason?

Sheesh

Beechview · 06/08/2020 12:47

Yep I know people like this. No one died from anything other than flu.
Big conspiracy from above the governments, who are just puppets, in order to control us.
What for, they can’t tell me. Even though hiding our faces behind masks from cctv seems to be adverse to government controlling tactics.
I avoid these conversations now. Theres absolutely no point in engaging with it.

My view is that it does exist and we should be doing what we’ve been asked to do - keep socially distanced as much as possible and wear masks.

lifesalongsong · 06/08/2020 12:47

Have you asked your friend why she's with such a brainless moron?

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 06/08/2020 12:59

Incidentally as an aside one of the contradictions I find most alarming is the irony of certain minority select youths and young adults within say bad metropolitan inner city neighbourhoods who have forever preferred wearing hooded attire to evade CCTV (even during a summer heatwave) are for some of the "not being told what to do" mentality against government mandated Covid best practice criminalised laws (though no enforcement) to mask up!

Surely the crims would be pro masks if nothing else. Indeed there are studies from the USA about these concerns that masks and face shields may in some economically challenging neighbourhoods lead to increased criminality but the health benefits outweigh potential crime waves to a point of toleration.

BlueJava · 06/08/2020 13:08

YANBU - exactly as @steppemum says!

TW2013 · 06/08/2020 13:19

I would be even more careful around them as you know they haven't been taking any precautions.

TheHookOfYourSplendour · 06/08/2020 14:43

@TW2013

This. Be careful.
Thegereldine3000 · 06/08/2020 15:28

And you feel justified on calling him out on his ludicris conspiracy theories because you've carefully considered his point of view, having researched his augments and your precious BBC statistics/government guidelines...

deste · 06/08/2020 17:16

M’y highly intelligent (2 doctorates among degrees and qualifications sister thinks it’s a hoax. She lives abroad and god knows what rubbish they are feeding each other. Our city has now gone into lock down but according to her the queen and Phillip are up in Scotland and they don’t want visitors. This from someone who has not left the house since March as she doesn’t want to catch it.

EleanorOalike · 06/08/2020 17:24

My local priest’s policy is “if you get it you get it” Angry and he’s refusing to stick to the rules.

They are all sitting in the same rows at church, singing, not contact tracing, he was having services and people round to the church worshipping together during the lockdown, they all pass things hand to hand. There’s over a hundred people at the church every Sunday most of them elderly and infirm. All the other places of worship
in the town are sticking to the rules but he thinks it’s “a load of silly rubbish”. He’s directly placing people’s lives at risk and it makes me so angry.

I’d really struggle to socialise with someone with this sort of attitude.

orangejuicer · 06/08/2020 17:31

I wonder if he and others like him say they think this way in order to appear interesting (when clearly they are just idiots) ?
