can you put up shelves?

I need some shelves and feel it's a job I really ought to be able to do.
I don't have any equipment though (although could borrow a drill from someone I'm sure)
It seems a lot of money to fork out to pay someone to do it for me, it feels like a life skill that I've somehow circumnavigated but...I'm lazy and not very practical. I think this is something I should learn.

Can YOU put up shelves?

DP is very good, but I'm useless: sorry.

Fatherbrownsbicycle · 05/08/2020 19:14

Nope but my 65 year old DM is fantastic with a drill. I know how it’s done but the prospect of drilling through something terrifies me.

LupinsNotLilys · 05/08/2020 19:15

Get on you tube

I learned how to rewire a 2 wired plug the other day. Didn't even know they existed!

Yes. I've put up walls to mount them on too.

RedRumTheHorse · 05/08/2020 19:21

Yes. I put up Ikea shelves. Parts of my walls are bloody concrete. I had to go and buy a hammer drill but I got them up. They are straight.

dodgeballchamp · 05/08/2020 19:22

I haven’t tried but I’m confident I could if I found instructions. Look online, there’ll be a step by step guide somewhere

madcatladyforever · 05/08/2020 19:27

Yes I can do most DIY including tiling and a bit of plastering. I had to learn because my husbands were so useless and it's too expensive to hire people for everything.
It isn't hard, there are tutorials for everything on youtube.

goodwinter · 05/08/2020 19:30

Definitely, although sometimes I lack the upper body strength to drill through the brick! I'm the DIYer in our relationship and I learnt from my mum (v self sufficient single parent).

FFS don't attempt to do this sort of thing by copying you tube. You could be electrocuted.
TheHighestSardine · 05/08/2020 19:37

@mosquitofeast It's ridiculously easy, and obvious when safe. "Is there any metal or wires sticking out?". Don't be such an alarmist.

LupinsNotLilys · 05/08/2020 19:52

I watched a fair few videos to make sure, I'm a single mum and can't afford to pay for help, I've no family around. I have to do most diy/gardening/ odd jobs

annonymousse · 05/08/2020 19:54

Yes I learnt when I got divorced 😊

It is not at all obvious, I have sat through the funeral of a young man who got this wrong. I am not being alarmist. You are being incredibly unbelievably ignorant to think it is something simple and obvious, when a tiny slip up can kill you

Port1aCastis · 05/08/2020 19:58

Yes I got my head round DIY after I kicked exh out.

Youtube is your friend

mosquitofeast · 05/08/2020 20:00

I find it hard to comprehend anyone could be so stupid as to attempt to learn a life threatening procedure of a random you tube video. The fact that another poster says they think it is easy and obvious, very clearly demonstrates how dangerous it is. Do people honestly , truly believe that if there are "no metal or wires sticking out "then it can't kill you? I don't know what to say. I very rarely have come across anything so ignorant.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 05/08/2020 20:02

I can put them up, but my walls are made of cheese, so they don’t stay up if I dare to put more than a paper clip on them! I even use these heavy duty metal plasterboard fixings. Have put up 4 shelves, making a right bloody mess of the walls in the process but thought ‘that’s ok, the shelves will cover it up’. Then as soon as any weight goes on the shelf, crash!!

@mosquitofeast what would you have done in my situation? Not after a fight I'm just curious

I don't know what your situation was, but if it was an appliance you were fixing, I would have just taken it to an electrician or electrical hardware store. If it was in your house and unmovable, I would have called an electrician.

I do plenty of DIY, shelves, doors, curtain rails, etc, but never gas, and never electricity

cheezy · 05/08/2020 20:16

Thanks everyone. I am inspired to give it a go.

@mosquitofeast unfortunately that wasn't an option for me as I couldn't afford it. I'm sorry to hear of your loss

Good luck op!

mosquitofeast · 05/08/2020 20:23

@SpartacusAutisticus

Yes, can put up shelves and do other DIY tasks (including wiring up a plug, which was considered a very basic life skill when I was growing up).
and guess what! It is now required that manufacturers complete this themselves due to the number of people who died attempting this basic life skill.
mosscarpet · 05/08/2020 22:25

mosquito wiring a plug IS a basic life skill.Plenty of electrical equipment is still supplied without a plug (eg all pond or outdoor equipmet for example) it is really extremely easy and SAFE to wire up or change a plug.

allthewaterinthetap · 05/08/2020 22:32

Yes, it is easy, really. Always use a power breaker in the socket, though.

Thecazelets · 05/08/2020 22:34

I was taught how to wire a plug in the early 1980s at my (all-girls) secondary school. I can change light switches too.

Can't do drilling or shelves though. Drills just sort of give up and die when they see me.
