Anybody else had this, paypal asking to send code to verif phone number but code not coming through?y

whathaveijustseen · 05/08/2020 18:28

Paypal keeps asking me to verify my phone number for 2-step verification but although I have checked my phone number the code is coming through.

Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem?

I set up two step verification on my phone a while ago and I always get the code from through.

Have you tried the international version of your number? Ie not 01234567890, but +441234567890?

goatley · 05/08/2020 20:42

Ah sorry OP I hadn't read your latest post properly.

Sounds like it's your phone I guess. Reboot it? Don't leave spaces between the digits?

PhoneLock · 05/08/2020 20:46

I had the email this morning.

Unless I have misunderstood, they will only send you a code when you try to log in and they require two step verification. That is why they need to make sure the phone number recorded against your account is up to date.

whathaveijustseen · 05/08/2020 20:46

Goatly, Bertie, I've tried all that so I think I'm going to speak to my provider tomorrow and see what they say, I'm using google authenticater at the moment which is working fine but would like it sorted if possible

@whathaveijustseen Hi op,
I've had this email too, if you click on the sender email, it comes up with the full email address which is clearly not a genuine Paypal address.
The scammers are getting better though as this actually had my name correct.
The Birmingham mail this week had an article saying that there had also been a big surge in Paypal scam emails this week.
You can report them to action fraud.
You can forward all phishing Paypal messages to [email protected]

There might be spam emails going 3oimd about this but 2 step verification is being brought in and not all the emails about it are spam!

Obviously don't click on any email links, because a) they could be spam emails and b) PayPal will notify you about it when you sign in at some point and you can sort it out then.

But it absolutely is something that's being rolled out. I have 2 PayPal accounts, one business and one personal, and I get all sorts of info via the business one which I use multiple times a day. Eventually 2 step verification will be mandatory.

I've had this email as well.

To be honest, I thought it was genuine. It has my full name, and the email address so [email protected].

I guess the 'mail' bit is the key?

EatsShootsAndRuns · 06/08/2020 08:54

@Crapster is spot on.

Crapster · 06/08/2020 08:58

If you get an email from PayPal telling you anything about your account, just go to PayPal via your web browser and check there. Don't click on the links in an email. But also don't assume everything is a scam, because this is a perfect example. If you don't confirm a phone number with PayPal soon, you will find yourself unable to use PayPal because they are bringing in 2 step verification and without it you won't be able to log in or confirm payments.

It's a massive ballache for me as I live somewhere with terrible phone signal so have to go up to the attic to recieve the phone codes 😱

Crunchymum · 06/08/2020 09:10

Whilst your issue may be genuine OP, I received a dodgy text a few days ago from "PayPal" asking me to go to a website to accept their new T&C.

I knew immediately it was a scam, asked my IT colleague to check it out....

I would have thought the "paypail" would be more of a red flag.

However, "[email protected]" is genuine.

Most properly done 2FA (I really can't be arsed to check PayPal right now) allow you to create a few one-off codes that you can write down and keep safe in case you haven't got signal/battery/etc.

Certainly Microsoft, Facebook and Google allow this.

In fact, (having piqued my interest) ... it seems PayPal are striking it alone and not offering backup codes. Which suggests all you need to do to bypass 2FA is call their customer services.

0DimSumMum0 · 06/08/2020 10:34

I had this before. When the number did come through it wasn't on my text it was through an app called Viber, that's when I knew it was a scam and contacted PP directly and changed all my passwords.

It's easier than that...

They have thought of that. You can use an authenticator app instead.

It's a shame it isn't as easy to read what I read about being out of battery though ....

Really? In what situation would be in where you are trying to pay for something by PayPal but have no access to electricity, either mains or from the device you are using to access PayPal?

RaraRachael · 06/08/2020 11:26

OH and I have both had emails recently about our Paypal accounts - neither of us has ever had a Paypal account.

Paypail was a typo on my part 😎

puzzledpiece · 06/08/2020 13:05

Yes. It's clearly a scam. Don't press on the link. The person requesting was in India.

AngusThermopyle · 06/08/2020 14:13

@whathaveijustseen @PhoneLock
I have definitive proof now as I contacted paypal themselves. It is a fake email address, see message screenshot below.
Also phonelock, I looked up that company 'Modeitsolutions' and they say they're celebrating 25yrs but on companies house they've only been trading since 2015. So they don't seem legit at all and after the paypal direct reply, their information is obviously untrue.

Good day! Thank you for contacting PayPal Messaging. My name is Ariel. I'll be the one who will going to assist you for today. Let me just review all the messages.

Hi **I do understand the confusion regarding this email that you've provided. I can definitely assure you that this is not a genuine email; of PayPal. The email address here is [email protected]. Other than that. I can guarantee you that this is a scam. I highly advise you do not entertain that email. Cheers!"

thewhaleohnonotagain · 06/08/2020 15:21

Scammers are definitely taking advantage of these changes, as I have said this on the paypal website itself when I login in on the browser not from an email link, when I try to verify it from my settings in my account I don't get the text. Spoken to my provider and they cannot work out what's going on either.

youcancallmeow · 06/08/2020 15:53

@youcancallmeow
If it's the one I was referring to ([email protected]) then Paypal themselves told me earlier today it's a scam. See screenshot of my query to them directly.
