Toys in the living room or their bedroom?

If you don't have a playroom, where do you keep the majority of your kids toys?

DS is three, and while he has a few bits in his room, most are in the living room. We've got the staple Ikea kallax but there are things that don't fit in there. Then there's the play kitchen, huge box of Lego, garage...

I don't remember even being allowed toys downstairs when I was young, and although he has a load of things in the living room, he tends to only play with a handful.

So where do you keep the majority of your plastic tat children's beloved things??

When we bought a house with a bigger bedroom for DD I wanted no toys in the lounge, they could be played with but had to go back up.....it lasted about a month. Now we have DDs nice wooden kitchen dolls house in the lounge and a 4 Ikea cube full of toys and everything else in her bedroom; once or twice a week I take a huge amount of stuff back upstairs that has gravitated downstairs

Young children want to be with their parents I’ve found. So even if I put all the toys on their bedrooms, they’ll bring them down and play with them in family areas. It’s different when they’re older. So our kids toys are in the living room, the dining room, the kitchen and their rooms. It’s annoying, but it’s not forever.

DDs (3&8) keep their toys in the bedroom or the airing cupboard if it's something quite big as their room is quite small. They can play with them pretty much anywhere but they have to be put away again afterwards.
When DD was younger, she had a playpen (godsend) in the living room and some toys were kept in there.

We have a toybox in the living room that everything gets packed away into at the end of the day. DD (4) doesn’t have a massive number of toys so it never takes that long, and she doesn’t have a play kitchen or anything bulky. We don’t have space for a playroom so we’ve had to be quite minimal on the number of toys, but generally that all works out okay.

No toys in the living room unless they are playing with them at that moment. Our house is v small and the living is toy free as possible, toys live in the conservatory and bedrooms.

Their bedrooms now. We did have them in the living room but it’s small and was being over run. It got messy so quickly.

Much better in their bedrooms for them.

The only room that doesn't currently contain ds's toys is the shower room. He even has a craft cupboard in the kitchen.

I don't know what the solution is other than to just wait for him to grow out of it a bit.

More storage isn't really an option as there isn't space for more. It's as pared down as he's willing to let it be (and he does actually play with everything he has, we just have a small house )

I have just checked and can see no toys in the utility room or downstairs cloakroom. The rest of the house is a sea of Lego and craft and Barbie's and childrens books.

I'm not sure why I have a children's handbag and magic book on my bed currently.

Everywhere! It drives me insane, but at 3, my daughter's too young to go up to her room to play on her own, so this is the way it is for now. One day I'll miss her wanting to play with me and the mess....thats what I tell myself, anyway Grin

My son is 4 and although he has some toys in his bedroom (turnouts sheds garage, Lego, soft toys) the conservatory is his. We have a big ikea wardrobe in there that is full of his toys as well as his garage, kitchen, lookout tower. Then he inevitably brings whatever he's playing with into the lounge or we have his big train track set up taking up half the lounge! The only room that is kid toy free is our bedroom! But storage wise it all goes in the conservatory or DS bedroom.

itsgettingweird · 05/08/2020 09:43

Hahaha! My first thought was also everywhere Grin

I had boxes and larger items and kept some in bedroom and some in lounge.

Then I rotated. So if we had cars downstairs I'd have the garage. If he wanted something else we'd pack them away, take upstairs and bring down - for example - the kitchen and play food, cleaning stuff and dolls etc.

I also always had a few books and puzzles in lounge and rotated them.

Ds just knew that whatever was out got tidied before something else came down.

Also helped keep the eight things in the right boxes Grin

Agree- everywhere. 😫

Whatsnewpussyhat · 05/08/2020 09:51

Toddler toys everywhere and multiple kallax. It's only temporary and I will be sad when it's all gone.

BillywigSting · 05/08/2020 09:51

On of the best things I ever bought though was our fairly inexpensive coffee table from wilko. It has a large drawer in the top half and two baskets in the bottom.

The top drawer is full of things like tablets, headphones, books that are currently being read etc.

The bottom two are full of transformer toys and super hero toys respectively.

It's basically a giant toy box that looks like a smart coffee table.

We did have a playroom when the kids were younger but there were still toys in every other room. 😬 Buy more kallax and don’t fight the toys.... you will never win that fight. 🤣

My kids are too old for toys now, it’s the dogs toys that are everywhere now. 🤦🏻‍♀️

InvincibleInvisibility · 05/08/2020 09:57

In our living room and their bedrooms.

Never in the kitchen, our bedroom or the bathroom (except for a few bath toys).

Half the toys in the living room are neatly tidied away. The other half are piled in a corner.

My boys are 6 and nearly 9 and much prefer playing in the living room where we are. Its nice, I don't mind and its easier to keep an eye on them.

Our living room is huge and its totally the heart of the family. We're usually all there, even if we're reading.

NoemiaElara · 05/08/2020 09:59

They are kept in the bedroom as we only have a small downstairs but big bedrooms. They have a basket they can choose a few toys to take down everyday and then another basket that is kept on the bookcase in the dining room. By the end of the day there is toys everywhere though!
