Toys in the living room or their bedroom?

If you don't have a playroom, where do you keep the majority of your kids toys?

DS is three, and while he has a few bits in his room, most are in the living room. We've got the staple Ikea kallax but there are things that don't fit in there. Then there's the play kitchen, huge box of Lego, garage...

I don't remember even being allowed toys downstairs when I was young, and although he has a load of things in the living room, he tends to only play with a handful.

So where do you keep the majority of your plastic tat children's beloved things??

All over the bloody house! Giant Barbie house in our front room!!

BakewellGin1 · 04/08/2020 22:21

Bedroom and Living Room. I want DS to be happy to play in his room or downstairs and not feel he shouldn't have his things around.

We have Happyland Track, Zoomizoo Tree House, Fisher Price Sit in Car and books set up in his room...

Downstairs he has a toy basket with pre school toys in, a book basket, ride on mickey truck, a pull along cart (usually full of toy story things), his Laugh and Learn Food Truck, Happyland Pirate Ship and Dinosaurs.... Oh and the Duplo fucking blocks that I injure myself on daily because he doesn't build he just tips them out!!

thewisp · 04/08/2020 22:21

We've got covert toy storage in most rooms. But I do make sure that it's all out of view every evening in the living room (for our sanity)

MyCatReallyIsAGit · 04/08/2020 22:23

Living room here. DC1 has a box room bedroom so very little space for toys in it. Plus he likes to play in the living room. We have a Kallax, a wooden cube thing that stores toys both in it and on it, and various little baskets of things on shelves.

Oh, and we now have baskets for the baby’s toys. My living room looks like a toy shop. Can’t see an alternative for the next few years though!

delilahbucket · 04/08/2020 22:26

At that age, most were in the lounge in storage boxes, with some in the bedroom. DS always played downstairs so it made sense. He always had to help today up at the end of the day. When he got to about 8 more things went to his bedroom and now we're at 12, very few toys are played with ☹️

stretchedmarks · 04/08/2020 22:28

Everywhere. It's important that my kids feel comfortable at home and they can play where they want (obviously not in the kitchen and bathroom due to obvious reasons).

I'd hate for them to feel like they can only play in their rooms.

Oly4 · 04/08/2020 22:30

Living room. If we leave them in their bedroom they don’t play with them!

AldiAisleofCrap · 04/08/2020 22:31

@LajesticVantrashell can you not have the dining room double up as a playroom?

PawPatrolMakesMeDrink · 04/08/2020 22:32

Everywhere. Mainly in the living room. He’s got stuffed toys in a tent in his room. DS is 3.
Our living room is our shared space, DP and I chill out, read and relax in there, makes sense to me that DS should use the room for playing in as well, its his shared space too.

ballsdeep · 04/08/2020 22:34

Every bastard where. I had to replace my thick pile rug last week because I was forever stepping on bits of Lego hidden in there.

soloula · 04/08/2020 22:36

My two are 4 and 6. Everything is in their bedrooms. They can bring stuff downstairs but once they're finished playing it gets taken back up and everything has to be away and it's a grown up space once its bedtime. Same if we are going out. Tidy up before we leave so we don't come back to mess.

whitepebblecactus · 04/08/2020 22:37

Everywhere here too Hmm

We're converting our garage into a playroom and I can't bloody wait!

jessstan2 · 04/08/2020 22:39

Everywhere.

Stroller15 · 04/08/2020 22:43

Every day for the past 2 years I pick up all the toys ever made and put it away in the kallax in the lounge and I wonder if anyone out there is dealing with it differently.

CostaCosta · 04/08/2020 22:50

We have renamed our living room the playroom.

SophieGiroux · 04/08/2020 23:54

Everywhere. But it's only for a short amount of time so I don't mind. I have an older child and stuff downstairs disappeared around the age she started school as she wasn't at home so much to play with it anymore. I agree with a PP that it's nice for children to feel comfortable in their homes and able to play nearby without needing to ask for things to be brought out or they're hidden away so they forget about them.

FraughtwithGin · 05/08/2020 02:16

Hmm, we had some toys in the dining-room, but most were in our bedrooms and stayed there.
Sitting-room definitely out of bounds for toys unless it was Christmas Day.

LajesticVantrashell · 05/08/2020 09:01

@AldiAisleofCrap - the living and dining room are knocked into one. The dining room portion has the table, Ikea kitchen and kallax unit so no space for anything else!!

@eurochick they grow out of them when they grow into video games and YouTube :-(

timeforawine · 05/08/2020 09:05

We have a built in unit on either side of the chimney in the living room, both have a few toys in, her room has the big toys that cannot be stored away, she has a toy kitchen in the hall next to the real kitchen.
Thankfully she's tidy and puts things away as we don't allow toys to be left out all the time in the living room.
The toys in her room never distract her at bedtime but do help keep her quiet if she wakes before us in the morning

Igglepigglesgrubbyblanket · 05/08/2020 09:05

In answer to OP, everywhere when they were little, but mainly the lounge/ kitchen so they could play while I kept an eye on them and also got some housework done

Blumbil · 05/08/2020 09:07

Bedroom, in units and storage boxes, completely out of sight. The bright plastic crap all over the floor gives me a headache and I cannot deal with the sound of cars being pulled back and whizzed past my feet all day!

Blumbil · 05/08/2020 09:11

I forgot to add, the pens are in the boiler cupboard in a pencil case along with the books. High enough so they can't reach even when standing on a chair! They either have them outside or on the kitchen floor under my very watchful eye! Grin

Kittykatmacbill · 05/08/2020 09:11

Kitchen diner / playroom they rarely play in bedroom, but unlike everyone else we have a billy bookcase with doors. It’s family space for everyone, we have a separate sitting-room though.

Lazypuppy · 05/08/2020 09:12

Most of dd (2.5yo) are in the lounge, but she has lots in her room as well because she plays up there at times now before she gets into bed for a nap
