Landline phone?

Do you still have one? I do but only my mother calls me on it! Thinking of cancelling it but are there any benefits in keeping it?

I still have one - something to do with sky (maybe no longer required).
Haven’t used mine for an actual call for ages. Stupidly just today I bought new rechargeable batteries for it as current have run out.
Actually I know I kept mine for when my late ma was alive in case she needed to call in the night. She knew my landline but would have had to fumble around to find my mobile (despite fact I had put a list of emergency numbers on her actual landline itself !).

We do. We have very little mobile signal at home, and find wifi calling doesnt often work.

CherryPavlova · 04/08/2020 21:46

We have no mobile reception and use our landline for most calls. It would feel very odd not to have a family phone. It means whoever is closest to a handset can answer. Its much clearer than a mobile, particularly when on speaker.

Snowpatrolling · 04/08/2020 21:49

Yes but only Cos my nan won’t ring mobiles. So if she has an emergency she’ll just suffer til someone turns up at her house rather than pay for the call to the mobile phone! 😂 she could be waiting days!

I have a landline. I live rurally and the mobile signal is terrible. I use the landline quite regularly

Trashtara · 04/08/2020 21:59

I've never had a phone plugged in to the landline.

We still have the landline because of broadband. Even ones that say 'no landline' just mean no phone package, you need the actual cable still.

RunningNinja79 · 04/08/2020 22:00

I have a landline. Again rubbish mobile signal, but we can still use mobiles to call as they then use the wifi. However, just use the landline. We have caller display so also use that to screen calls.

MIL and my parents use it to call us. Also agree it is a better sound.

thegcatsmother · 04/08/2020 23:22

I always use the landline as the mobile signal isn't brilliant and is non existent at the back of the house at times. I don't have to find the landline phones, and I don't have to make sure they're charged either as they are usually back on their cradles.

drspouse · 04/08/2020 23:25

We have one and when we had a serious days long power cut a few years ago it was very handy. We'll be keeping it. Clearer signal too.

drspouse · 04/08/2020 23:27

It would feel very odd not to have a family phone.
This too. I want the hospital doctor to get one parent or leave a message, when they ring about a DC. I don't want to take all their calls myself or the same for DH.

ohdearmymistake · 05/08/2020 00:06

Yes we do, it's the only phone we use. We all have mobiles with good reception but don't use them.

LegoMaus · 05/08/2020 00:15

Generally you’re forced to have a landline in order to get internet. I just don’t plug a handset in.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 05/08/2020 00:20

We got rid of ours after we were burgled. They had cut the phone line in case we had an alarm system that worked through the land line. We didn't notice for over six weeks (that the phone wasn't working, we did notice that we'd been burgled) so we reckoned that we didn't need it. I think we theoretically have a landline as part of the package since we changed our internet provider but we've never used it.

Frownette · 05/08/2020 00:21

No, I've had 3 friends who used to use a landline and then stopped say "you were the only one who ever used it!"

Still remember the numbers off by heart and miss dialling 100 was it? When the lines were down.

shrill · 05/08/2020 00:32

It is a very good back-up that I would never get rid of, like having at least one decent size bath in the house!

Notfeelinggreattoday · 05/08/2020 00:38

Yes rarely used but keep for emergencies etc and need landline for our internet etc so doesnt really add much to cost

Pimmsypimms · 05/08/2020 01:06

I didn't connect my phone up until lockdown when I realised that my mobile signal in the lounge is shit and I missed too many important phone calls. There's only 3 people who have it though, I don't register it with any services and I still manage to get at least 1 nuisance call per day!

cosmicpassages · 05/08/2020 01:12

We have one for broadband and as a mobile phone finder. I keep a basic phone plugged in for use in an emergency. We rarely get calls on it as it has a free call minder on it where they have to say who is calling before the phone rings, it gets rid of all spam calls.

Crankley · 05/08/2020 01:25

I have one - I don't use my brick mobile which is normally uncharged at the bottom of my bag.

BlatheringOn · 05/08/2020 01:40

I still have mine because it works when the power is off and the mobiles run out of charge. Also works when the mobile system is overwhelmed with calls and you can't get through. I like to always have a plan B.

hilariousnamehere · 05/08/2020 01:45

I keep mine for emergencies - upstairs and my office have a very boring black cordless phone each, but downstairs I have an original blue and cream bakelite phone with one of those turn-and-return dials! I adore it and I love that it still actually works 🤩

Stayfreshcheesebags · 05/08/2020 01:46

We have one. I use it to ring my mobile when I've misplaced it somewhere in the house 😂

Mothership4two · 05/08/2020 01:55

Have one that comes free from our internet provider. Like others here, only my mother rings on it. It screens any cold callers, etc.

A couple of years ago we had a massive local power cut that went on over 24 hours and all our mobiles ran out of battery. Landline was only way to ring out (and communicate with power company)

squeekums · 05/08/2020 02:47

not in years, its an extra cost for nothing
even though we rural the mobile network is not too bad
when dd starts staying home alone, she will get a mobile too

Topseyt · 05/08/2020 03:08

We do because mobile signal is unreliable here. WiFi calling seems a bit hit or miss too, though getting better.
