Landline phone?

Do you still have one? I do but only my mother calls me on it! Thinking of cancelling it but are there any benefits in keeping it?

- mobile phones don't work in a power cut because the network goes out. Landlines do. And of course mobiles need to be charged, frequently if you have a smart brick. Fortnightly if you have a decent small phone.

Our landline goes out as it is cordless but the mobile does still work, we just have to play Hunt the Signal in the house and garden.

did you watch that stupid report on the ITV news the other night, by any chance? That reporter was an embarrassment to the job description. Even the presenters had to apologise afterwards.

reasons to have a landline:

  • mobiles are really shit when it comes to call quality. If you actually want to talk to anyone, don't use the smart brick, use a landline. If you only communicate with your thumbs then the mobile does have its place.
  • even without that issue, mobiles DO NOT WORK IN MANY PLACES. Get used to that fact, snobby millenial types.
  • you can get home internet without a landline, but not if you aren't in a fibre area and not if you aren't prepared to pay extra.
  • mobile phones don't work in a power cut because the network goes out. Landlines do. And of course mobiles need to be charged, frequently if you have a smart brick. Fortnightly if you have a decent small phone.
  • the scammers are easily thwarted by a cheap ebay call blocker. I get more scammers on my mobile although I care less about that because it is off at night.

there was a problem that calling mobiles from landlines was very expensive; most call packages now include calls to mobiles, even BT (who are extremely expensive but used by many older people who are unable to shop around).

Technically yes it came with our internet package but we don't have a phone plugged in.
DH and I both work shifts so people rarely know if we're in or not so alway text us first. The only people who ever called it were scammers or sales calls so we don't bother with it.

Yes because the mobile signal here is patchy.

I agree that even if you have a mobile phone, you must also have a landline phone. Call quality – many reports show the quality of sound and clarity in landline phones is better than on any cellular phone. This can be a beneficial asset for the hearing impaired and those who rely on a clear connection: emergency response – every second counts in an emergency. For example, our law firm used this VoIP company, but we always have a landline phone at reception and other offices. Because that way we feel safe and it is very efficient to choose it at work because you don't have to give everyone your phone number, you provide the company number. Landline international calls (which is what I have mine for) are expensive. There are work arounds (CelticTel minutes, etc). But WhatsApp is a free app and the sound quality is great.

I gave up my landline almost 20 years ago. My current home was built without phone jacks because we just didn’t see the point.

We have one but I unplugged it and put it away in the cupboard as all the scammers seem to use landline nos. we have a good mobile signal though and don't use the phone much and don't need to ring anyone abroad.

Landline long distance calls are so much cheaper than mobile!

We do because mobile signal is unreliable here. WiFi calling seems a bit hit or miss too, though getting better.

not in years, its an extra cost for nothing
even though we rural the mobile network is not too bad
when dd starts staying home alone, she will get a mobile too

Have one that comes free from our internet provider. Like others here, only my mother rings on it. It screens any cold callers, etc.

A couple of years ago we had a massive local power cut that went on over 24 hours and all our mobiles ran out of battery. Landline was only way to ring out (and communicate with power company)

We have one. I use it to ring my mobile when I've misplaced it somewhere in the house 😂

I keep mine for emergencies - upstairs and my office have a very boring black cordless phone each, but downstairs I have an original blue and cream bakelite phone with one of those turn-and-return dials! I adore it and I love that it still actually works 🤩

I still have mine because it works when the power is off and the mobiles run out of charge. Also works when the mobile system is overwhelmed with calls and you can't get through. I like to always have a plan B.

I have one - I don't use my brick mobile which is normally uncharged at the bottom of my bag.

We have one for broadband and as a mobile phone finder. I keep a basic phone plugged in for use in an emergency. We rarely get calls on it as it has a free call minder on it where they have to say who is calling before the phone rings, it gets rid of all spam calls.

I didn't connect my phone up until lockdown when I realised that my mobile signal in the lounge is shit and I missed too many important phone calls. There's only 3 people who have it though, I don't register it with any services and I still manage to get at least 1 nuisance call per day!

Notfeelinggreattoday · 05/08/2020 00:38

Yes rarely used but keep for emergencies etc and need landline for our internet etc so doesnt really add much to cost

It is a very good back-up that I would never get rid of, like having at least one decent size bath in the house!

Report
Frownette · 05/08/2020 00:21

No, I've had 3 friends who used to use a landline and then stopped say "you were the only one who ever used it!"

Still remember the numbers off by heart and miss dialling 100 was it? When the lines were down.

We got rid of ours after we were burgled. They had cut the phone line in case we had an alarm system that worked through the land line. We didn't notice for over six weeks (that the phone wasn't working, we did notice that we'd been burgled) so we reckoned that we didn't need it. I think we theoretically have a landline as part of the package since we changed our internet provider but we've never used it.

LegoMaus · 05/08/2020 00:15

Generally you’re forced to have a landline in order to get internet. I just don’t plug a handset in.

Report
ohdearmymistake · 05/08/2020 00:06

Yes we do, it's the only phone we use. We all have mobiles with good reception but don't use them.
