How can I make this corner cabinet look better?

It's shit isn't it but I just don't know what else to put on the shelves. I love the cabinet but don't like how the shelves look.

In my last house I had a big Victorian bathroom where it lived and it looked great there. Here it doesn't seem to be fulfilling its potential but I don't know how to help it. Any ideas gratefully received!

It doesn't look shit! The only thing I could suggest is smuggling out of your home and putting it in mine! 😂

Mummyshark2018 · 04/08/2020 18:55

It looks lovely but all the things you have in it are very small. I think you need a bigger statement piece- vase/ jug/ picture frame etc

Knittedfairies · 04/08/2020 19:02

A trailing plant would look good.

The things inside are too small for the shelves/ cabinet.

cunntyfunt · 04/08/2020 19:04

There's a lot of pieces but it doesn't look very full. Some bigger items would stop if looking bare, maybe a photo/picture if that's your thing and done foliage, possibly a trailing plant of sorts.

RemyHadley · 04/08/2020 19:04

The things you’re displaying are too small I think.

You need bigger pieces.

Also I put plants everywhere. You could put some houseplants in nice pots, maybe a trailing plant or something like a fern or small palm.

wetandmiserable · 04/08/2020 19:11

Thanks all. The shelves are quite narrow in terms of height and that's why I've gone small, but maybe I should get bigger, wider pieces. And I do love the idea of trailing plants - if I can keep one alive...

The pieces inside seem to have no visual connection to one another (maybe pick a colour/contrast theme?). A trailing plant on top/or the top shelf would soften the hard edges and blank spaces. Perhaps a stack of books on one shelf to break up the 'saminess' of lines of trinkets (sorry)

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 04/08/2020 19:17

And fake plants may be your friend - have a look for a 'real touch' chain of hearts, string of pearls or weeping ivy plabt6

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 04/08/2020 19:26

It doesn’t look planned or organised so it looks like a dumping ground. Either a similar collection on a shelf or a single larger piece.

Maybe keep with the Victorian theme and add a terrarium

Buggedandconfused · 04/08/2020 19:32

Ooh that’s crying out for plants!

Cocolapew · 04/08/2020 19:32

I have bigger things in mine, the picture frame leans against the back, my shelves are narrow as well.
Sorry the photo is blurry I couldn't be bothered getting off the sofa to photograph it Grin

I have something like that. It's perfect for storing the DC's made up but still play with Lego models!

Ivy is a good trailer and doesn't require much care.
BadDucks · 04/08/2020 19:38

Which room is it in? Looks like it would suit serving bowls/dishes etc. rather than knick knacks. Mind you I'd probably just get rid of it if it no longer serves it's purpose.

RemyHadley · 04/08/2020 19:45

Actually I agree with the other poster who said the small things look mismatched - they look like they’ve been randomly plopped down there (sorry!) rather than being a treasured collection that is deliberately on display.

If there was a theme or a more cohesive colour range it might work better.

Treesandsky · 04/08/2020 19:46

Paint it! Something colourful would be my choice.
Then fill it again but search on Pinterest for shelf stacking ideas. A few books stacked on there side here and there. A couple of plants too and then a few others bits and pieces.

Davros · 04/08/2020 19:48

You need an obelisk

TorkTorkBam · 04/08/2020 19:48

The colour does not go nicely with the walls and curtains. It looks like it is out of place.

Waytoomuch82 · 04/08/2020 19:49

Op

Do those things on display have any sentimental value?
If not, bin.
Then bin the cabinet

LillianBland · 04/08/2020 19:56

I know they’re not exactly the same, but what about a two tone paint job? I agree with the others about the size of the ornaments.

Definitely bigger things. And think of a thematic connection. What do you love? Old toys, trees, dogs? Whatever it is, think about building something around that.
Also a colour connection - not all the same, but an accent you pick up on each shelf, even in a very small way, for consistency & to draw the eye.
Not dark pots as contrast is way too great.
Have you heard of the rule of: one natural type pattern, one geometric pattern, and one plain? That’s usually helpful.
I would also consider hanging things on the internal walls - small pictures, ornaments. This would give some visual depth/layering, though you’d need to be very very strict to avoid cluttering.
I might also put it in the kitchen (in mine, I’d paint it a very very pale pink outside, white inside, & put pale old blue & white china in it with a tiny bit of something pale yellow or a very muted old red on each shelf.)
It’s a pleasant problem to have as a lovely item!

Hormonecrazyhell · 04/08/2020 20:09

Can you take out the lowest shelf, then put a tall vase in?

wetandmiserable · 04/08/2020 21:25

So many exciting ideas and I definitely see I need bigger items. I love the colour of yours Coco.

In my head it does have an orangey theme but I guess the bits are all so piddly it doesn't come through. I feel like it does fit well in its corner and I'm definitely going to use some of these ideas.

This shows one way of displaying objects in a corner cabinet. I think trailing plants, real or fake, would look great in there. Have a play around with other items you own, take photos, and see what you like the look of.
