What's the house job that makes a home look clean and cosy?

A bit 1950's housewife but have spent the day unpacking from holiday a week after coming home , doing washing and sorting stuff out. The house is cleaner but doesn't feel as organised and sorted as i'd like.
What can I do to bring this place make look cosy as well as clean? I am a slattern but do like to live somewhere where people don't wipe their feet on the way out Grin.

Hoovering.
Everything looks better after a good hoover.

FinnyStory · 04/08/2020 15:31

I agree hoovering.

I have recently treated myself to an Eufy robot vacuum cleaner, although I'm not sure why it was my treat and not the rest of the household's! He has made such a difference, putters around doing the hoovering for me and is really very thorough. The house always looks lovely when he goes back to bed. Grin He also gives me someone to talk to.....

alwaystired234 · 04/08/2020 15:33

Another one for a Hoover

katy1213 · 04/08/2020 15:33

Flowers.

JorisBonson · 04/08/2020 15:33

Hoovering, dusting, wanky things like pillows arranged nicely.

EasilyDelighted · 04/08/2020 15:40

Hoover, dust, cushions and any throws straightened on the sofa. No random piles of paper or other stuff not put away. But no to bare surfaces, for cosy I like to have photos in frames, shelves of books, maybe vases or candles, pot plants etc.

JustOneLastThing · 04/08/2020 15:40

@JorisBonson what's this thing with whacking cushions down the middle? I have never contemplated karate chopping my cushions-they are just 'there'.

Oh no karate chops in my house either, just scattered nicely in a complete OCD way and no-one is allowed to sit there

JustOneLastThing · 04/08/2020 15:44

@JorisBonson DS likes to sit astride the ruddy things. I am forever asking him to sit normally and reshaping them🙄

Sounds like my 37 year old DP 😂

No clutter is the answer. You can have the cleanest house in the world, but if there's stuff strewn on sofas, beds and clutter on cupboards and tables, it will look very untidy.

JorisBonson · 04/08/2020 15:50

Agreed @CarrotPuff

I agree. I'm a slattern. Who lives in an open plan flat with 2 DC (and a DH who is partially working from home). The stuff everywhere it's like fighting the incoming tide and it always looks messy.

this!!! quick tidy of obects and a hoover = clean and tidy home.

And clean the bathroom sink & loo.

Jdhshekr · 04/08/2020 15:57

Flowers and plumping up cushions and artfully draping throws and things will help with cosiness.

middleager · 04/08/2020 16:00

Agree with the clutter.
Trying to follow Kondo and have streamlined a bit.

Lazysundayafternoons · 04/08/2020 16:06

@FinnyStory which model of the eufy do you have? Was looking at these a few weeks ago but didnt know how good they would be.

EasilyDelighted · 04/08/2020 16:12

Oh and shoes on racks or in baskets, not the floor.

Twospaniels · 04/08/2020 16:13

Wash the kitchen floor, put duck round the loo rim (smells clean). Dust the black glass TV stand.
If I do those three things I can kid everyone the house is fully clean 😁

MoreListeningLessChatting · 04/08/2020 16:19

Hoover
No clutter
Simple but stylish furniture

Oh I'm not sure, it was on offer for about £189, one of the mid priced ones. I wasn't convinced either, I fully expected to be disappointed, I thought it might help inbetween "proper" cleans but it's really very good. Just a shame he can't do the stairs Grin

Lovemusic33 · 04/08/2020 16:31

Hoovering
Cushions
No clutter on the coffee table or/and dining room table

justasking111 · 04/08/2020 16:31

dispose of kids and pets. Only half kidding here Grin

Thelittleweasel · 04/08/2020 16:38

@JustOneLastThing

"Polish the taps!"

This is my answer too. Once house is clean, best way to look cosy is no clutter. Only few decorative touches are all that is needed.
