Best place to take kids under ten - anywhere between Birmingham and York

As above, really. Planning a bit of a looped road trip and got a few places on the list. The return drive home will see us pass between Birmingham and York. Not too fussed which route we take between them.

We could add in a nights stay too.

So....if you were planning a day out/experience for a 5yo and 8yo in this area, what would you want to do?

Depends what you've seen before, and how regularly you travel the area to some extent.

I, for example love West Midlands Safari Park, but if you have a Safari Park near your home, then there's not a lot of point in visiting one when you are away, it's better to visit places you can only see in that area. Ditto places like zoos and the Sea Life Centre.

My dc love Eden camp when they were a bit older than yours.
If they are train fans then the Railway Museum in York is always good.
If in York, the Jorvik Viking Museum is supposed to be excellent

I really like Blists Hill Museum at Ironbridge

Cadbury World is popular in Birmingham if you've never been . Can combine with a visit to Selly Manor which is almost next door.

I don't know what is open at the moment - you'd have to check all that.

Drayton manor is good for kids your age. Taken my DC a lot over the years and no complaints, smaller than alton towers so not too much walking and the queues have never been more than 20 minutes for us.

A walk in the Peak District might be nice? Ashford in the water, Edale, Buxton and Millers dale are nice places. Mam for is also a good climb.

There’s also lots of other things to do there if hiking isn’t your thing! There’s some national trust houses there (can’t remember the names though! Blush), one of them was actually used for filming Malfoy Manor in Harry Potter so would be good if you have a Harry Potter fan!

Jorvik is excellent too, we went when DD was in the middle of the Viking topic at school and she loved it Smile

Newby Hall near Ripon is a fantastic day out with kids of that age. Billy Bob’s Ice Cream Parlour in Yorkshire is fun, with a good play area. Tropical World in Leeds is also worth a visit.

teaandlotusbiscoff · 28/07/2020 01:15

Might be slightly off route but Warwick castle is excellent!

Pieceofpurplesky · 28/07/2020 02:05

You could visit Chester - both the city and the zoo are fabulous

Oddbutnotodd · 28/07/2020 02:28

Conkers at Ashby-de-la-Zouch is worth a visit.

SimplySteveRedux · 28/07/2020 02:33

Alton Towers, if you stayed over (on-site or B&B) you could do the Splash Landings water park too. If it's something you'd want to do let me know and I may be able to sort you a discount. Can also answer any questions. My DD works there.

pepperycinnamon · 28/07/2020 02:34

Came on to say Conkers, I think it's open as a pupil told me they were going in the holidays.

The zoo definitely is, but when we visited last September we felt it'd deteriorated somewhat. Still a brill day though.

One more, if you're travelling up the M6 then the Trentham Monkey Forest is a great day out. There's also amazing gardens and a wonderful shopping village all within five minutes of each other. They are a couple of miles off M6 J15. Can answer questions about any of them, I'm local.

The National Space Centre near Leicester is really good, although its currently closed until 8 August so depends when your trip is.

ZeldaSmelda · 28/07/2020 05:37

The Crocky Trail is hands down the best place I have ever taken my DC. A few friends have also been and they agree. Everything’s outside so loads of fresh air and so easy to socially distance. My DS loves it too. Couldn’t recommend it highly enough!

ZeldaSmelda · 28/07/2020 05:38

Oh yeah and trentham is really good and there’s a premier inn there if you needed to stay overnight

waterworld not works stupid autocorrect

ZeldaSmelda · 28/07/2020 17:41

www.crockytrail.co.uk/

This is the link. It’s all outside, you go in and there’s slides, and what I suppose you’d call them activities? Such as kicking a football at a target and getting a point or running along a foam
Wall and try not to get knocked off. There’s a cafe etc. Then the trail itself
Is about a mile/mile and half , you can simply
Walk it or you can use the crossings which are located all around it such as a balance bar or a bouncy bridge. It’s hard to explain but it’s fantastic!

SimplySteveRedux · 28/07/2020 19:10

Be careful with Waterworld, there’s been safety concerns about chipped tiling and dated, dilapidated, equipment ruminating locally for some time. It was closed for a while to rectify the issue but still concerns exist.

Ohh good to know as we were looking forward to going back to try the new slides.
