Are you busy at work?

Just wondering what other people’s experience is of their work right now. Is anyone actually really madly busy? If so, what do you do?

Things are pretty quiet for me (corporate lawyer). Clients/colleagues all seem to have a bit more time to chat as well, so I don’t think it is just me.

Calendar is fully booked. Work at a jobcenter.

MuseumOfYou · 27/07/2020 17:52

Work for a Christmas card charity, revving up now!

flowerycurtain · 27/07/2020 17:54

Yes - madly busy.

Farmer and its harvest!!

SkiingIsHeaven · 27/07/2020 17:55

Structural Engineer. Mad busy.

Everyone has been stuck at home and decided that they need more space, extensions, knocking walls out to improve the use of the space or finally getting around to finding out why there are cracks in their homes etc.

I also do lots of work for a number of Councils and they kept looking after their houses, structures and retaining walls etc.

Crazy busy here. I'm an insurance broker to corporate clients. Don't even feel that I have time to catch my breath or take a break when I'm working as there is just so much to do. It's getting to the point that I'm feeling anxious when I'm not working as I can either hear my phone vibrating every few minutes with e mails or thinking about all the work I need to do if I turn my phone off. I need a break but I daren't take a week off as there are just too many e mails to come back to. Very stressful.

bungleZippy12 · 27/07/2020 18:00

Social worker here at Cafcass. It’s always relentless but the demand has increased hugely during lockdown and shows no signs of letting up.

Changeagain1 · 27/07/2020 18:01

Hellish busy :( we’ve been like it since lockdown - long days WFH.
Everyone has said the same thing never known it like it. We blaming senior management usually they are busy being driven to meetings etc they suddenly have time on their hands & have random requests with expectations it can be done quickly.,,,

Oblomov20 · 27/07/2020 18:02

Horrendously.
Accounts.
Since day 1 of lockdown I've been doing extra unpaid hours.

megletthesecond · 27/07/2020 18:04

Yes.
Picking up work from furloughed staff, who are gradually coming back. I'm glad I have a job but am saving my annual leave for when the dc's are back at school and will have a nervous breakdown rest and tidy up then.

rockingthelook · 27/07/2020 20:57

Not stopped for months, NHS, anyone saying that thye have ops and OPD appointments cancelled and hospitals half full needs to know that we are also trying to work without loads of staff that are shielding , or off with anxiety...not forgetting the over 70's (that's not a mis print!)

VodselForDinner · 27/07/2020 21:15

Really busy. I’m a HR Project Manager currently looking at return to office and accommodation strategy for a gigantic national company. Need to see if we want to bring everyone back to the office and, if not, what the trade-off is going to be against all the offices we own and rent.

ThedietstartsonMonday · 27/07/2020 21:18

We are busy, it's definitely picked up in the last few weeks since the shops/businesses have re-opened. I work for one of the main UK banks, in their corporate banking section.

Candycats · 27/07/2020 21:18

Another vet nurse here (who knew there were so many of us on MN!) and stupidly busy. Literally don't stop all day, barely get time for a wee sometimes. Thankfully I'm part time and I've never been more grateful for that!

Norugratsatall · 27/07/2020 21:26

No not busy. Work for a charity and our work has been curtailed due to Covid. I've had Covid myself and struggling to get back to full health so don't mind it being a bit quiet.

MedSchoolRat · 27/07/2020 21:30

yes & no...
I was employed FT to end March. That wasn't so busy a time.
April I worked FT but only paid for 1 day/week. Most of my time was volunteering in covid response work supporting local govt and doing science. I continued to work~ FT until end June when got a contract backdated to 1 May, 60%FTE and short-term. Now trying to keep to 60%, my hours are quite busy.

Shutters come down in August annually in my industry. Many colleagues will be unresponsive until mid September (or later). My hours worked/paid may start to balance out then, sort of.

I'm a public health researcher (in infectious diseases) employed by a university.

StartingGrid · 27/07/2020 21:39

Literally haven't caught a breath since two weeks before lockdown, I work in construction. I am sitting here trying to muster up the energy just to wash my hair, each day is a slog and I've basically got zero energy left on a daily basis

LioneIRichTea · 27/07/2020 21:40

MOD Civil Servant. Stupidly busy. I haven’t had a working day off since lockdown busy.

HorsesDogsNails · 27/07/2020 21:44

Really busy. I'm public sector in a non-departmental government body that funds research into innovation, we've been tasked with supporting businesses through the pandemic so we're operating at huge volume and changing processes to also operate at speed. We're all wfh and I'm struggling with having a never-ending stream of work!

I'm really grateful to have a secure (as it can be) job but I do feel like I'm plate-spinning most of the time at the moment!

RosieposiePuddingandPi · 27/07/2020 21:44

Crazy busy. Work at a major UK visitor attraction and normally sit at a desk doing a lot of planning for visitor engagement. Now we're open again without any of our usual seasonal staff it's all hands on deck so I'm out on site 8:30 till 6 and deal with things way above my pay grade.
It's fun though and nice to see how busy we are after being closed for so long.

Not busy, incredibly quiet. I work in chemotherapy production. Sad

BigGlasses · 27/07/2020 22:08

Surprisingly busy. I work in a research facility at a university. I worked mostly from home through lockdown on grant applications and a large tender that I was preparing. And the odd day in the lab analysing Covid research samples. I thought getting back into the lab in July would be a quiet start as the labs are at reduced capacity (social distancing) but no we are back to full pelt already.

Looked at my annual leave and realised I have only taken 2 days this year so far. Am off next week, can’t wait! I’m exhausted.

slug · 27/07/2020 22:19

I've been flat out doing 10-12 hour days since lockdown

I work in learning technologies in a university setting. Turning a large institution around at short notice and gearing up for putting everything online is not an easy job.

Doesn't stop my job being at risk in yet another restructure though.

gypsywater · 27/07/2020 22:23

Always mad busy. Never take a lunch break. Could work endlessly and it would never be enough. The to do list just gets longer. NHS clinician.

gypsywater · 27/07/2020 22:25

@rockingthelook absolutely!
