What is this job called - adding products to a website?

Hi all, going around in circles - Im trying to get someone to add products to our website & every ad I just get a million social media & marketing people & no one with experience! They need experience cause the products are complicated (multiple options etc & you need to be good on spreadsheets).

So what is the job title of a person who adds a product to an ecommerce type site using the online software (Magento, shopify that kind of thing). They need
To use photoshop for editing images
To write nice descriptions
To do prices for lots of options & variants
To fill in all the parts the software has eg products that are similar, colours for the filters etc.
To update prices & options using spreadsheet & on the site

Its not a website administrator role because theres no programming

Its not website content manager because its much more than writing descriptions.

Really stuck on this!!!!

I used to do this as part of a job and it was described as an online retail merchandiser.

GoldStripes · 27/07/2020 12:53

You are describing three different job roles in one.

Using photoshop to edit images would be a junior graphic design role, or at least someone who has experience in design/photography.

Writing good quality product descriptions is a copywriter’s/content writer’s role.

Pricing and parent product set-up is a web admin role.

As someone who used to work in digital marketing and has experience with the Magento platform, I think you will struggle to find someone with experience of ALL of these elements.

I suppose you could describe it as an ‘ecommerce admin’ role, but even then, employers who want a designer/writer/admin assistant all in one are a real bugbear of mine.

RooMama · 27/07/2020 12:54

Keywords like web content management/ web content administrator would be appropriate.

@GoldStripes It is almost different roles. I get that - but each product aspect is interconnected - eg its only looking at the images where you see things you might use in the descriptions. The photoshop part is easy - its just cropping & resizing.

The descriptions just need decent english & a bit of imagination plus logic - its not war & peace. But they need to be relevant, have specific qualities & to some degree be related to the product options.

Ive had people doing it at home but its a disaster as they dont have the up to date information, & we changed system & they are not used to doing things with spreadsheets. Its not something I can outsource sadly (unless they are already expert in these products).

Maybe its where Im advertising - is there a good website to use? I used glassdoor for a sales position & just got millions of inexperienced randoms answering the screening questions with yes I have this experience when they havent.

I’ve never done much recruitment so I can’t advise you on that front. An issue you may also face at the moment is that there are currently a LOT of people out there who may have been made redundant and look at your job spec and think “how difficult can that be?” (Answer: not as easy as it looks Grin )

Are you on LinkedIn? Could you ask around contacts to see if anyone knows someone? I do a lot of this kind of work and get a lot of referrals via LinkedIn, or simply through people who know me, who then recommend me to someone else.

Cherylina · 27/07/2020 14:50

Website content manager is what I would use.

AutumnDragon · 27/07/2020 14:52

Ecommerce manager / assistant? BTW if you are in Somerset I have an ideal candidate for you Grin

Fressia123 · 27/07/2020 14:55

It's e-commerce. I used to be a sr. content specialist and didn't do any of that...

FATEdestiny · 27/07/2020 14:59

Would you be prepared to train a suitable candidate on some aspects?

You could then focus on essential tasks for narrower aspects of the role and find people with this key skill. Then add on other aspects as desired skills and that they form part of the role but training given.

DrDreReturns · 27/07/2020 15:02

Idk, but I'm a programmer who's had to write code to work with Magento. It's interesting to see how widespread it is.

JingsMahBucket · 27/07/2020 17:12

Content uploaded is another term to use.

JingsMahBucket · 27/07/2020 17:12

Content uploader, rather.

ProtectAll · 27/07/2020 17:22

I would describe that role as an eCommerce content manager

Arkon · 27/07/2020 17:36

This is basically my job, I’m an e-commerce manager.

Frenchfancy · 27/07/2020 17:50

This is basically my job too, but I don't really have a job title other than assistant manager.

To those saying it is basically 3 jobs in one, surely that is normal for small businesses.

Vodkacranberryplease · 27/07/2020 20:49

Ok well that's helpful all!

@GoldStripes That's exactly what happens! How hard can it be - it's actually very very difficult. I've had to virtually remove any mention of social media in the job (it's on linked in) as I was just getting a thousand pouting 'influencers' thinking 'I can do this.'

No love you can't, you really can't. You need either extensive specific product experience with some experience putting products online or you need extensive experience putting complex products online and some experience with our kind of products.

You're not altering the software so it's not webmaster/technical. There's too much with pricing etc so it's not content.

I might give it a few days (am hiring other people) then advertise on a job site. Monster? Indeed is stupid money. Glassdoor not sure about the people on there. Any other ideas?

Hi,

Have a look at what a Product Owner does and if you are in the South East area, I may have a perfect candidate for you Smile

anotherwinkywinkybumbum · 27/07/2020 20:52

I have absolutely no experience in the role but it sounds fab!

VioletCharlotte · 27/07/2020 21:03

We have a similar role in my team. The role isn't exactly the same, but we call them a 'Digital Content Officer'. I'm not sure if 'Officer' is so widely used in the private sector though (I'm NHS). Maybe 'Executive' or 'Manager' , depending on the level of the job?

Vodkacranberryplease · 27/07/2020 21:08

I'm in London..

SpottedOnMN · 27/07/2020 21:10

Indeed isn’t stupid money, having a job on there for a couple of weeks usually only costs us about £100. Their filtering questions usually work reasonably well.

ShellsAndSunrises · 27/07/2020 21:12

I’ve done this as part of an in-house social media role...

But it’s usually done by E-commerce Managers. And then you’d specify in the description that they need to have Magento experience. And potentially what version of Magento, as they are quite different.

I’d try LinkedIn for hiring.

glasshalfsomething · 27/07/2020 21:15

Is list as an e-commerce merchandiser. Try total jobs.

cautiouscovidity · 27/07/2020 21:21

When you do post the job advert, please share the link as I know someone who is job hunting and has extensive experience of this type of thing (they used to run their own e-commerce store but sadly it's recently closed as a result of COVID-19) Wink

Vodkacranberryplease · 27/07/2020 21:26

@SpottedOnMN I spent over £2k advertising 2 roles. Lots of replies from people with no experience too.
