Name labels for school clothes.

Hi,

My son starts primary school in September and I need to get some name tags for his clothes. Which would you recommend? Iron or sew on?

Thanks in advance!

I like sew on - Cash’s are good

xyzandabc · 27/07/2020 09:17

I've always used stick-ins. As well as clothes, they go on water bottles, lunch boxes, pencil cases. No faffing with sewing or ironing and they really do stay stuck.
Eldest is 13 going in to year 9, yesterday I finally used the last stick-in from the original batch that I bought when she started reception. I have no idea how many I ordered but they don't lose stickyness even if you keep them for years!

TheGirlWhoLived · 27/07/2020 09:17

We trialled Stick ins for some mumsnet product test but I was really impressed!! They didn’t come off with plenty of washing (even now) the names are printed on first so no faff and no sewing. They stuck on everything (including lunch boxes, school uniform and inside trainers etc) and took about 5 mins to do all the uniform.

Prior to this I used a sharpie for laundry and that washed out after a couple of months or so

I've got a stamp.
Having two DSs that often share stuff (close in size), my stamp says A/B BOGOF so they're both covered.

Thistly · 27/07/2020 09:19

I really enjoy sewing them in. And my sewing has improved as a result!

ExclamationPerfume · 27/07/2020 09:20

Definitely Cash's sew on. I bought a large pack when my children were young. They have been reused so many times and are still in perfect condition.

Having been in a school it's a nightmare when parents write in clothes and it wears off and you can't read the name.

TheGirlWhoLived · 27/07/2020 09:20

Great minds @xyzandabc just googled and it’s called Stikins

SummerHouse · 27/07/2020 09:21

I just use a Sharpie pen to write in the label. But I am quite a lazy parent. Grin

ThePug · 27/07/2020 09:25

I’ve ordered stickers from My Nametags for my reception starter - he loved that he could choose a picture for them as well as his name

00100001 · 27/07/2020 09:34

We used stikins... Brilliant.

Just surname and contact no. Eg Smith (07888 888888)

Means one pack for while family 👍

We did that, but it washed off :(
Allyg1185 · 27/07/2020 09:36

I use the iron in ones and they are very good. The sticky ones I use for water bottles and inside gym shoes

BlusteryLake · 27/07/2020 09:40

I use a combination of Cash's woven name tapes for expensive things that get taken off a lot - blazer, jumper, pe top and Stikins for trousers, lunchbox, water bottles etc. It is really worth taking the time to sew in labels in my opinion - you only do it once and it lasts as long as the garment does.

TeenPlusTwenties · 27/07/2020 09:42

Sew in ones make great hooks for jumpers and shirts if you just sew at the ends rather than all the way around. I always feel they are harder for other people to remove too.

I don't really like the 'just surname' method as many staff/helpers at primary don't know the surname (plus if there are siblings jumper gets returned to wrong one).

Stickers for other stuff though.

Dogsaresomucheasier · 27/07/2020 09:45

I’ve never found an iron-on or sticky that stays on. Cash’s sew-in here, every time. Have just your surname put on them so you can hand-down to siblings without redoing them.

justanotherneighinparadise · 27/07/2020 09:45

I use my name tags and find them great. I get the coloured Mr Man stick on ones for both kids and also get the white iron on ones with surname/DC1/DC2 so I can order a load at a time and use them for both.

drspouse · 27/07/2020 09:49

Extensive trials reveal:
Iron on- don't bother.
Stikins are fine for MOST things but do come off. Also, your DC2 can pick them off hand me downs you'd hoped not to relabel.
Stamps are fine so far but some clothes don't have anywhere to stamp, or it's too hard to find.
So we use:
Stamps where possible.
Stikins for hard objects/shoes.
Sew in labels for the odd thing that won't work with either of these.

Elisheva · 27/07/2020 09:50

Have used stikins since ds1 started nursery 12 years ago.
I get our surname printed twice on each label and then cut them in half.

drspouse · 27/07/2020 09:51

My DCs have DH's ten-a-penny surname so just last name would be useless. At least one other child, and the school secretary, at DS small specialist school have the same surname, and heaven help us at DD 300-odd mainstream primary.

Summerdays2014 · 27/07/2020 09:51

Thanks everyone! I’ve gone for the Cash sew in ones.

Now does anyone have any recommendations for personalised water bottles?!?

Sew on 100%

I use the same stick on stickers that I use in the clothes and even the dishwasher doesn’t budge them.
Nomorescreentime · 27/07/2020 09:57

I started with sew ins, but now DC3 is about to start school I have discovered stamps. Amazing time saver!

drspouse · 27/07/2020 11:30

You'll need something for shoes, wellies (though Sharpie is OK even with a long name as they are big enough!), maybe lunch boxes (for holiday clubs anyway) so I would second the suggestion to get some Stikins.
That way, if your DC chews the top of the water bottle so it's no longer usable you won't be left buying a whole new expensive personalised water bottle.
